Posted May 20, 200718 yr after watching 7 ages of rock last night, i was struck by the influence on rock music the who played....or did they? they were credited with being the first archytypal rock act, smashing things up and behaving wildely. ok they did... but musically?... i dunno... i never thought as the who so much as ground breaking inovators as followers of the current fashion. i really liked their 'mod' period though, 'i cant explain', 'anyway, anyhow, anywhere' , 'the kids are alright' and of course, 'my generation' which id rate as the all time 'teen anthem'. punk 12 years before punk was in fashion. .... their mid period was good too... 'im a boy', 'substitute', 'pictures of lilly', 'happy jack'.. all good britpop anthems, but imho never as good as the kinks or small faces. i really did find their later material rather patchy to say the least. i didnt like 'pinball wizzard', overplayed and overrated. 'magic bus' was c**p! i never took to their concept album phase.. tommy, quadrophenia etc were bland to me... they were like queen... i know they were pretty good, but failed to hit the right spot to me personally. 'join together' and 'wont get fooled again' were the only later singles i liked... 'squeezebox', and 'you better you bet' were dire.
May 20, 200718 yr I really like The Who, although their first singles were recorded AFTER the Kinks - You Really Got Me & All Day & All Of the Night (which both featured a then uncredited session guitarist by the name of Jimmy Page...... what ever happened to him ). So you could argue that The Who were not the first archetypal Rock act. I actually like a lot of the Who's 1970s material. The Who's Next (1971) album is their finest work (Wont Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Reilly (Teenage Wasteland), Behind Blue Eyes, Bargain, The Song Is Over, etc). True, their last great album was Quadrophenia (1973). But you could argue the same thing about The Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street (1972). When from 1973 onwards Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd were the contenders for the title of the World's Biggest & Best Rock band until the end of the decade.
May 20, 200718 yr Who at Last is a brilliant album from start to finish and Live at Leeds is great as well. I think their early 70s period is arguably their most influential especially if you throw in Quadrophenia as well.
May 20, 200718 yr after watching 7 ages of rock last night, i was struck by the influence on rock music the who played....or did they? yeah i watched that show as well. the bbc do great music docs and they are following up the stiff story with one on factory and soul britainia with a pop one as well. i really liked their 'mod' period though, 'i cant explain', 'anyway, anyhow, anywhere' , 'the kids are alright' and of course, 'my generation' which id rate as the all time 'teen anthem'. punk 12 years before punk was in fashion. .... their mid period was good too... 'im a boy', 'substitute', 'pictures of lilly', 'happy jack'.. all good britpop anthems, but imho never as good as the kinks or small faces. yeah man!!! substitute an absolute anthem!!!! dont know most of the others tho. as for britpop and punk (ie 1970s UK new wave punk) reference, yeah think their tunes would def fit on an comps album with Oasis, Paul Weller (jam and dadrock years rather than jazz-funk coffee shop era  :puke2: ) and people like that. uXJSVuXM7lQ btw doesnt this look more like a reject for mitchell and webb
May 20, 200718 yr Author I really like The Who, although their first singles were recorded AFTER the Kinks - You Really Got Me & All Day & All Of the Night (which both featured a then uncredited session guitarist by the name of Jimmy Page...... what ever happened to him ). May 20, 200718 yr i wouldnt call the kinks 'rock' though... well I dont think i would called them modern r&b  might not fit an akon remix  anyway seeing as threads about 'From The Jam' and Madness ended up being in the indie and alternative Rock section with all things urchin rock (and the slightly ironic named alternative rock genre known as 'britpop'), i think that they should be labeled rock. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/01/Thehits.png and anyway this below is a killer tune and always welcome on the hits riffs and rock tune countdowns even if the video is a v old performance from some old tv show in the b&w days!!!!! QePUfGXvV8k youtube says: From July '65 The Kinks on Shivaree with their Proto-Heavy Metal Garage Punk single. Fab
