Chartifacts

For a fifth week Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" remains the No.1 single in

Australia, in fact the entire Top 4 singles all remain stable this week, with

the highest new entry coming in at No.5. If Avril stays at the top for another

week, it'll equal her debut single "Complicated" for the six weeks it remained

at the top of the charts back in August/September 2003.

The aforementioned highest new entry at No.5 goes to Powderfinger with their

18th Top 100 entry, and 11th Top 50 single, "Lost and Running". By debuting at

No.5, it becomes their second highest placed song, one place behind their August

2000 single "My Happiness" (No.4), and also their third Top 10 single, the other

being "On My Mind" (No.9, June 2003). They were last on the charts in January

2004 with the No.11 single "Sunsets", and this track is taken from their

forthcoming album "Dream Days at the Hotel Existence" which is released on June

2nd.

The second of four new entries to the Top 50 this week comes in at No.22,

and is funnily enough the first ever Top 50 single in Australia for the Dundee

Scotland five-piece Snow Patrol. "Signal Fire" is the first physically released

single from the former No.1 album "Eyes Open" (Jan/Feb 2007 for 5 weeks; No.22

this week), as the two previous single were only Digital released singles in the

form of the No.1 Digital track "Chasing Cars", plus it's follow-up "Open Your

Eyes". The track is also the lead single from the Spiderman 3 Soundtrack.

Fedde le Grand is at No.32 this week with his former No.8 single "Put Your

Hands Up for Detroit", now in it's 29th week on the charts, and this week he

debuts with his remixed version of the Camille Jones track "The Creeps" at

No.25. Camille is a Danish-born singer, musician, composer, arranger, and

producer, and is more of a soft R&B, folk style singer until Fedde got a hold of

this track and made it into the current No.2 Club Track in Australia. The

original version of "The Creeps" appears on Camille's third studio album

"Surrender".

Coming in at No.50 is the first track in over two years for British

singer/songwriter Natasha Bedingfield, "I Wanna Have Your Babies". This is her

third Top 50 single, the other two were "These Words" (No.5, October 2004) and

"Unwritten" (No.26, Jan 2005).

As the charts are calculated from Saturday the previous week to the end of

trading on Friday night, and most Record Companies now release their product

from Saturday's, anything that was selling well the day before a major event

like say Mother's Day last Sunday, could still have an effect on the next week's

charts. And so the Michael Buble effect has kept his album "Call Me

Irresponsible" at the top of the Australian Album charts for a second week, but

that has had a negative effect on his single "Everything" which is one of the

two biggest dropping single's this week ("Steer" is the other one), down seven

places to No.33, as people buy the album and already have the new track, there

is not as much demand for the single. The new album now equals the two weeks

that his debut album remained at the top.

What I expected to be the new No.1 album of the week comes in at No.2,

Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight", giving the Warner group the Top 2 albums in

the country. It's Linkin Park's fifth studio album, and sixth charting album

(there was a live one in 2003), and their first since their collaboration album

with Jay-Z, "Collision Course" which reached No.8 in the first week of January

2005. This album unfortunately becomes their third No.2 album, following

"Meteora" in March 2003 and "Hybrid Theory" in early 2001.

58 weeks ago (10th April 2006) The Hilltop Hoods debuted at No.1 with their

album "The Hard Road", and this week a collaboration between themselves and the

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra called "The Hard Road Restrung" debuts at No.8.

Bjork debuts at No.20 this week with her latest album "Volta", her first

studio album since the September 2004 project "Medulla" debuted and peaked at

No.17. Also making a return to the Top 50 Albums this week is a group that was

formed in 1983, Megadeth, who debut at No.23 with "United Abominations". This is

their first release on their new record label of Roadrunner, and their first

album since 2004's "The System Has Failed".

Missy's new album is great, not as good as The Sound of White but there are about 5 VERY good songs on there...I'd recommend it :-)

Powderfinger are Australia's best rock band since INXS, and got a few namechecks on Neighbours too!!.

They released a few singles in the UK, none made the top 75 tho :(.
