Ana Matronic was born Ana Lynch before she fell into the world of performance art and set up her own transvestite club. She is best known as a member of colourful, retro, gay, pop group Scissor Sisters. The band's new single, Kiss You Off, which is their first to feature Ana singing the lead vocals, is released next week.

You sing the lead vocals on this single. Are you finally getting the respect you deserve?

Yes, goddamn-it! I feel respected in the band anyway but this is a nice new hat to try on. It’s a natural progression.

Is it the start of a solo career?

No, I’m not interested in going solo. I’d do a different project but it would be a collaboration. I’m not interested in having the spotlight on myself – there’ll be no Gwen Stefani moment in my future. I’m more interested in bands than in solo artists. Collaborations are less about the ego and more about what you’re making.

What was the last argument you had in the band?

It’s been a while. It’s usually over stupid things like which U2 album is the best or ‘I think so-and-so is sexy’ then you’ll get ‘No, they’re not! You’re crazy!’ which becomes an argument. It never ends in fisticuffs though.

Did you really tell Oasis off for saying bad things about you?

No, but I did go up and talk to them at the Brits. We share the same security company, so when I heard they were hanging out backstage I marched straight up to Noel Gallagher, pinched him on the cheek and gave him a big hug. If someone says something bad about Scissor Sisters I don’t engage them in an argument but try to kill them with kindness and make them love me. Noel referred to me as a ‘top bird’ to a mutual acquaintance. He was very nice, as was Liam.

When did you realise you were famous?

When Dolce & Gabbana invited us out to see their men’s fashion show – that was when I realised people were taking notice of what we were doing. The moment I felt most famous was when we were in Japan and I came out of an elevator and a Japanese girl just burst into tears and started bawling in front of me. It was amazing. I was really excited. You know you’ve made it when you’ve made a Japanese girl cry. I hugged her and said: ‘I’m just a slobby rocker girl, don’t cry on my account.’

What’s your favourite fashion item?

I have jewellery that came to me from my grandmother that will always be special. I got a couple of fabulous handbags from Liberty in London. They weren’t cheap. One was a really beautiful, embossed, black leather box bag which has lasted surprisingly well on tour. I love anything with their Ianthe print, a classic art nouveau print from the 1800s. It’s beautiful.

You’ve got circuitry tattooed on your arm. If you were a cyborg what implants would you have?

I’d have a cyborg arm with various attachments. I’d have a whole variety for the kitchen – a knife attachment and you could julienne until the sun came up, a whisk attachment, a juicer. It’d be fabulous. I’d also have a blow-dryer attachment – anything that makes it easier to do my hair.

When was the last time you got so drunk you threw up?

So long ago I can’t remember. The last time I was so drunk I don’t remember getting to bed was a few weeks ago when I went out with the Scissor Sisters tour crew. We went to a Brazilian restaurant in Germany and I got absolutely s***-faced. We all went out to celebrate doing a successful tour but for me, keeping up with a bunch of Scousers was never a winning proposition.

What were you drinking?

Mojitos. I’m a big fan of saki and bourbon too, whatever. I’ll drink anything that does the trick.

Have you ever asked anyone for their autograph?

Yeah, Blondie at a record signing. I saw Sir Paul McCartney walk by at Live8 and thought: ‘Now’s my chance,’ and said: ‘Excuse me, Sir Paul, could I…?’ But before I could ask, he asked me for my autograph. He was collecting them on his programme for his grandson, I think. It was mind-blowing for a Beatle to be asking me for my autograph.
