The Feeling capped a memorable 12 months in the music business by collecting the Ivor Novello for Songwriters of the Year at this afternoon’s ceremony.

The award recognises the band - Dan Sells, Kevin Jeremiah, Ciaran Jeremiah, Paul Stewart & Richard Jones - for a series of hit singles which include Love It When You Call, Never Be Lonely and Fill My Little World.

Elsewhere, the International Hit Of The Year Ivor was won by Sorry, written by Madonna and Stuart Price; the Album Award went to the Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, written by Alex Turner; Amy Winehouse’s Rehab won the Ivor for Best Contemporary Song; and John Reid and Jorgen Elofsson - writers of X Factor winner Leona Lewis’s chart topping A Moment Like This – collected the statuette for Best Selling UK Single

Elsewhere, Scott Matthews’ Elusive won the coveted Best Song Musically and Lyrically, while Elton John added another Ivor to his collection for his co-write with Scott Hoffman and Jason Sellards on the Scissor Sisters’ I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’, which was the PRS’s Most Performed Work.

Organised by The British Academy of Composers & Songwriters in association with the Performing Right Society, the Ivors are effectively the Oscars of the songwriting community as winners are chosen by a panel of their peers.

A total of 15 awards were presented today, as Yusuf Islam was honoured for his Outstanding Song Collection, Norman Cook was similarly feted with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award, Peter Gabriel was give the Lifetime Achievement Ivor and Motown producer Quincy Jones received the Special International Award.

Other awards recognised Martin Phipps work on The Virgin Queen as the Best Television Soundtrack, John Rutter took home the Ivors Classical Music Award, John Powell’s composition for Ice Age: The Meltdown was voted Best Original Film Score and George Fenton was awarded the Academy Fellowship, joining such luminaries as David Arnold, Sir Malcolm Arnold, John Barry, Elton John, Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb and Paul McCartney.
