One of my earliest chart memories is being an awe that The Jam - Going underground entered at #1, which was unusual at the time, especially for an unknown group.

The Jam - Going Underground

thought their material was very patchy tbh... although jam at their best were superb, they...weller.. was too much a plagarist, using riffs from the kinks and the beatles and elo!

loved 'all around the world'... my fav track of '77... new wave at its best.

'funeral pyre' was also a top track.

think weller like the manics is one of those acts that's worth a £3 album. some things heard good, some things boring (stuff the quizman plays at the v dadrock, never get what song it is all sounds like the changingman) and some things havent heard (or since they have been labeled jazz-funk i dont think i want to)

yeah man Going Underground great but dont know 'funeral pyre'

My faves were ------In the City, All around the world, David Watts, Down in a tubestation at midnight, Eton Rifles and The bitterest Pill.

I'm a big Weller fan from the Jam, through the Style Council to his solo stuff. Seen him loads of times since '92 and he's great live! Great mix of fans too. It's only in the last few years that he's added any Jam tracks to his set and they're the obvious Town Called Malice, That's Entertainment and more recently Pretty Green and In The Crowd. Apart from them I love Funeral Pyre, In The City, Modern World, Strange Town, David Watts, Down In The Tube Station at Midnight, Precious and Bitterest Pill.

A good album to get if you like the Jam is Extras, some of the not so well known tracks on there.

Absolutely adore Funeral Pyre and never understood why it didn't make No 1. One of the first albums I got was Snap! Lovely double vinyl with the Free Live EP. There was a period from around 1979 - 1982 when they couldn't be touched for singles - Wardour Street, Tube Station, Absolute Beginners, Eton Rifles, Going Underground, Start, Town Called Malice... the list goes on.

Top 5 Jam songs:

3. Down In A Tube Station At Midnight
