Avril Lavigne - The Best Dam Thing
My Review

Ok, to start of, let me get this out of the way. When I first listened to this album I thought it was something that someone had thrown up, eaten it back up, spat it back out and produced it into an album. Thats honestly what I thought. But after a while and giving it a 2nd chance I realised how good this album actually is!

1. Girlfriend
Probally the WORST song on the album! As fun/catchy it was at first when we all heard it, after a while it really starts to dig at you and get on your nerves. Tis probally also the most un-original song on the album as well, as the song holds a striking ressemblance to Hey Mickey. Save this one for the cheerleaders ;)
7/10

2. I Can Do Better
Picking of from Girlfriend, I Can Do Better moves onto a more serious guitar riff, punk/rock vocals and decent lyrics. It seems that Avril has produced a teen-version of what a P!nk song would sound like, despite once again Avril goes back into her cheerleading-routine [02:00] again. If you ignore the little blip <-- then the song is actually pretty decent!
8/10

3. Runaway
Sadly the song starts of as I Can Do Better v.2 but by the time she reaches 00:32 things deffinatly pick up and moves onto a rocky Kelly Clarkson-type chorus, which suits Avrils voice! It seems as the more you move into the album (although it's only the 3rd song), things start to get more serious. The drum beats, base line become more old-avril and her voice gets more powerfull. This should of been where the album started, not with girlfriend.
9/10

4. The Best Dam Thing
Just as things finally start to progress, we get the cheerleading-chanting again, and then open up to a chorus that sounds like something KELIS would come up with! Thankfully it dosn't last long, and the rock kicks back in. The song then goes on in the same style as it opened with, and then, yes you guessed it, the cheerleading-chanting comes back with this time a flavour of Fergie (spelling things out). "Let me hear you scream loud", yup she's deffinatly a cheerleader. So a bit of kelis, fergie, cheerleader, mixed with the elements of rock/punk/pop and what do you get? A very enjoyable song. ^_^
9/10

5. When Your Gone
And finally the chanting stops, and we get a ballad! The dark guitar chords are back, she's belting out the Kelly Clarkson-esque chorus again, and what is the outcome? A very beatufiul sad power ballad! One thing I did notice, it may just be the whole canadian[sp?] accent, but I could hear a bit of Celine Dion-accent within her vocals  Don't know if it's just me or not!
10/10

6. Eveything Back But You
Another Anti-Song from Avril, opening with a riff similar to Sk8ter Boi! :D ONCE AGAIN she uses the chanting again, BUT for once, it actually works and fits well with the song! It's like the Punk Princess is back again,
9/10

7. Hot
Now we're up to one of my favorite songs on the album! The sweet "ahh ahh" draw you in and then the light-rock chorus shakes the song up. Everything in this song connects and fits well, it's easy to listen to and the song is one that I can renember the most. Near the end the sweet-avril-singing appears again and then we here the Kelly Clarkson-type vocals/chorus hitting back! :D I just like the mix of sweetness/rockness, they work well. :D
10/10

8. Innocence
Ballad number two, and I think this is the first time we hear a piano on the album. Im not to keen on the lyrics Avril has written at some points in the song, but Avril's voice and piano sound great together, but this isn't a patch on Im With You,
9/10

9. I Dont Have To Try
Kelis is back! :o Not for long untill the usual guitar riffs are back. One thing, in the verses Avrils vocals are lazy, she's even squeeking in some points. She could at least experiment with the music and put some effort into her vocals on this song.
7/10

10. One Of Those Girls
The further you move into the album, the more boring the music assemble gets. Would prefer if she spiced things up a bit, SURPRISE US AVRIL!
6/10

11. Contagious
This song sounds different to the above, its more American-Rock influenced, which is a nice change. :D It's a shame that the song is really short, it dosnt have much to it. But from what we get it's a good song! :D
8/10

12. Keep Holding On
Ok where do I start? Forget about the music, the production of the song, and concentrate on one thing, the CONTROLL in Avrils voice! :o  Her voice stands out above everything on the whole album put together, It's just a real shame that she didn't have more songs like this on the album. This is deffinatly one of the highlights, a beautiful song to end of the album!
11/10

Overall:
Ok thats the review comming to a close, and to end of an overall. The album overall is excelent! A mix of Punk, Rock, a bit of pop in some places, and in most songs it works together well. There's just one thing that stands out above eveything that I've noted in most songs. The CHANTING/CHEERLEADING. In only ONE song does it work, apart from that, she does it so badly half the time it sounds like she's just taking the p!ss. Save it for the cheerleaders avril, not for your album. To be honest, I hope she quickly moves on through this era, and then realises how much respect as an artist she has lost. Despite that, overall the album is good, not one song I hate, although at some times the music tends to get boring but that dosn't matter, as other things in the songs make up for it. :D

Overall Average Score: 8.5 :cheer:
