Bands mark Sgt Pepper anniversary

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/60sseason/documentaries/media/st_pepper.jpg

Contemporary musicians have recorded their own versions of songs from the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album to mark 40 years since it was released.

Oasis, Stereophonics, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Bryan Adams and The Magic Numbers were among those who took part.

Geoff Emerick - the engineer in charge of the original 1967 sessions - used the same equipment to record the new versions.

The recording sessions will be aired on Radio 2 on 2 June.

The programme, which was recorded in two parts, hears from the artists about the importance of the album.

The second part will be broadcast 16 June.

'Influential'

Emerick used the original analogue 4-track equipment to demonstrates the techniques employed for the recording at Abbey Road studios back in 1967.

Solo artist Adams recorded the title track, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The singer said the album was one of the most "influential" records as he is "still drawn to the songs today".

He added: "Those songs that they have on that album are beautifully crafted, beautifully recorded and we'll never get close to that."

Razorlight performed the track With A Little Help From My Friends, The Fray covered Fixing A Hole with the Magic Numbers playing She's Leaving Home.

Getting Better was sung by the Kaiser Chiefs.

Speaking of the original recordings, lead singer Ricky Wilson said: "I do think because you had to work a lot harder for it, the results were a lot more astonishing."

Dogs home

BBC 6 Music has also commemorated the anniversary by looking at some of the myths that surround the album.

Items include a trip to Battersea Dogs Home to find out if the group really did record sounds only audible to dogs on the out groove of the album.

An interview with Lucy Vodden who went to school with John Lennon's son Julian will also be broadcast.

Lennon said the song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, was inspired by a picture his son did of her in class, and not the drug LSD.

Are you interested in hearing the results or not?

Some tribute...ask a bunch of middling indie chancers...and Bryan ruddy Adams (!)...to record half-arsed versions.

Nope, I'd rather cut my ears off than listen to the results.

It will be interesting to see (hear) if it is even worse than this:

In 1988 the New Musical Express released a tribute album called Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father, in aid of the charity Childline. It featured cover versions of all the Sgt. Pepper tracks by various artists. The track list is:

Three Wize Men (aka XTC) - "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

Wet Wet Wet - "With a Little Help from My Friends"

The Christians - "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"

The Wedding Present with Amelia Fletcher - "Getting Better"

Hue and Cry - "Fixing a Hole"

Billy Bragg with Cara Tivey - "She's Leaving Home"

Frank Sidebottom - "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"

Sonic Youth - "Within You Without You"

Courtney Pine - "When I'm Sixty-Four"

Michelle Shocked - "Lovely Rita"

The Triffids - "Good Morning Good Morning"

Three Wize Men (aka XTC) - "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)"

The Fall - "A Day in the Life"

The Fall - "A Day in the Life"

Mark E Smith is a legend though, he can get away with it... I thought The Fall's version was actually pretty damned good....

Bryan Adams?????  Sh"t man, they're getting desperate to rope that Canuck c/unt in, aren't they....?

Easy Grimly!! Bryan Adams is not that bad as some of his photography stuff is all right

have you heard the von sudenfed stuff? supposed to be good.

Looking forward to seeing the programe tonight. I am most looking forward to hearing Oasis and Stereophonics covers. Kelly Jones has such an amazing voice, his cover of 'Don't let me down' was great, as was his and Noel Gallagher's duet of 'I'm only sleeping' imo.
well im gonna close my eyes and hope something alternative comes on my computer monitor

however dont you think doing this for the 40th of Scott 4 would be more interesting. just think you could have a line up like Jarvis, Bjork, Thom Yorke, Marc Almond, David Sylvian, Neil Hannon, Goldfrapp, Richard Hawley, Bowie etc etc

to find out more about the godfathers of indie (the beatles would be called 'indie' nowdays...lol) i suggest that everyone votes YES for a beatles forum... they were the original, seminal popgroup and many tracks still sound as good if not better then many indie artists around today...

every serious music site must have a beatles forum http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=40601
