Posted June 1, 200718 yr As "Torn" is one of my favourite all time songs I thought I'd check it out on Wikipedia and turns out that somebody else got it to before Ms Imbruglia. The rock band Ednaswap recorded the song first back in 1995. I tracked it down on Youtube and WOW it's amazing - think I like it better than Natalie's version tbh. If anybody can get hold of an audio I would be eternally grateful. Ednaswap Version 1m6vSm7oHCI Natalie Imbruglia Version j6toyTNf-UM
June 2, 200718 yr At the time, Chris Evans made a big fuss about Torn being a cover version... however he got the 'original' artist wrong, as he said this Norweigan singer Trine Rein was the original version, when in fact Ednaswap was the original. Trine Rein did have a hit with it around 1996 in Norway I think. I think Chris Evans contacted Trine to try and get her to have a go at Natalie for covering the song, but she wasn't interested (probably because she knew she'd look like a hypocrite, or maybe she just wasn't bothered either way). The Ednaswap version is a bit more 'rocky' than Natalie Imbruglia's, but personally I like the sound of Natalie Imbruglia's voice better. I don't think there's really a big scandal about this really. Songs often get passed around to different singers before someone scores a big hit with it, and that's been going on in the music industry since at least the 1950s.
June 2, 200718 yr The reason there was a big media frenzy about this being a cover version, is because she claimed she'd written the song and it was found to be a cover.
