I have recently compiled retrospectively my Top Tunes #1s from 1994-early 2006, when my chart started. This will the first of a couple of thread showing these, and I will be giving a small commentary, picture and video for each one.

Comments would be gratefully received. I will start with 1994-1999, 1994 being the year I was first really into music, and was at University for the majority of this time.

The Cranberries - Linger (3 weeks)

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/0/09/200px-CranberriesLinger.jpg

This has always been The Cranberries finest moment, imo. I first started to like Linger when my best mate at Uni played their album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? alot. I suppose this is my first ever #1! :o

Suede - Stay Together (3 weeks)

http://www.essentialsuede.com/staytogether.jpg

One of Suede's best songs - and a follow up to the Dog Man Star era. I still think this is a stunning song, showcasing Brett Anderson's emotional vocals perfectly.

Ace Of Base - The Sign (3 weeks)

http://www.disco-disco.com/images/aceofbase.jpg

Way better than All That She Wants, this still stalled at Number 2 in the official chart. Pleasingly enough, it was an American #1 :P

I'm SO too young to know what these are :(

Hmmm, maybe have a lookie at the vids and see if they are your thang? :w00t:

*BOW* (we should get a smiley for that)...

The Cranberries and Ace Of Base are pure class! Both songs remind me of my childhood so much! Glad to know they were No.1s in your charts!

Blur - Girls and Boys (4 weeks)

http://www.naitik.net/blog/wp-content/photos/blur_girlsandboys.jpg

The first of a fair few Blur #1s, Girls and Boys is the lead track from my 2nd fave album of all time, Parklife. This song caused a chart stir at the time by entering high and at its peak (number 5) and dropping fairly fast. Girls and Boys, about Club 18-30s holidays in the sun marked a change of direction for Blur and a return to the mainstream.

Pulp - Do You Remember The First Time? (2 weeks)

http://www.mlp.cz/space/OpatrilP/Pulp/Do_You_Remember_The_First_Time.jpg

The best track from Pulp's best album, His and Hers. This track was accompanied by a 30 minute documentary in which celebs of the time recount details of their first time.

OT Quartet - Hold That Sucker Down (3 weeks)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000052442.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This dance tune was used in Queer As Folk in 1999, which is where I first came to love it. It is a 90s techno classic, released in both 1994 and 1995, and reaching the top 20 both times!

Ah 1994. The first good year for music imo. :P

I don't remember it at the time but I'm in touch with the classics so to speak.

I loved the Cranberries, Suede, Ace Of Base + Suede.

Not the best Pulp song and I haven't heard the last song. :(

I haven't heard many of those tbh, Girls & Boys just annyos me now

Roll on The Avalanches (pun not intended) :P

Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing (2 weeks)

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.hart/lyricsd/images/dibart.jpg

One of the few #1s on my and the official chart from 1994. This is a bit of a retro dance classic, and has aged well, imo (except the video, which looks hideously naff and old!!)

Pulp - Babies (4 weeks)

http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/Sources/AMGCOVERS/music/cover200/drc000/c080/c08077mnh7j.jpg

Iconic Pulp classic, Babies was Pulps first Top 20 hit on the official chart in 1994, on its third re-issue. Was made famous for its TOTP perfomance when Jarvis unveiled a T shirt stating a hate of Wet Wet Wets Love Is All Around, in its 7th week of #1 at the time.

Blur - To The End (3 weeks)

http://www.sopetshopboys.co.uk/amazon_blur.jpg

The highlight single of Parklife, To The End showcases Blur's genius and maturity. Simply beautiful.

I actually hated that Tony Di Bart track, me don't like. :P

I don't know the last two but that Tony Di Bart song was awful. :manson:

How did the Loeb do? :o

Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Cherry – 7 Seconds (2 weeks)

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s150629.jpg

I still don't know what Youssou N'Dour is on about in this song, but I think this is Neneh Cherry's finest moment. This was performed at Live 8 in 2005.

Portishead - Sour Times (2 weeks)

http://www.rockreviews.net/albums/sourtimes.jpg

1994 had many classic albums, and Dummy from Portishead is one of the most endearing and timeless, imo. Sour Times is a trip hop classic and the biggest hit from Dummy. This song is best enjoyed on a hot summers evening, lying in the dark with the windows open. OK, i'm weird  beth Gibbons may think 'Nobody Loves Me', but I do!

Oasis - Live Forever (3 weeks)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004WX1W.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The first appearance from Oasis in this thread, and imo the highlight of their debut album. Live Forever has since been voted the best song ever in several high and low brow music polls, and rightly so.

Blur - Parklife (1 week)

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/3/39/200px-Parklife_cover.jpg

The title track from Blur's best album, this iconic 90s classic features Kevin from Eastenders, the ultimate Mockney geezah! Not one of Blurs best songs, imo, but still its a must for my #1s of the year.

Whigfield - Saturday Night (2 weeks)

http://hitparade.ch/cdimages/whigfield-saturday_night_s.jpg

Mad bint Whigfield ended Wet Wet Wet's 15 week reign at the top of the charts in September 1994. Hurrah! I have danced to this TOO MANY times :arrr: ne ne na na naaaaaa!

Snap! Feat Summer – Welcome To Tomorrow (2 weeks)

http://hitparade.ch/cdimg/snap_feat_summer-welcome_to_tomorrow_s.jpg

East 17 - Stay Another Day (1 week)

My favourite Christmas song! :o The only appearance by Mariah in my chart ever!

Oasis - Whatever (3 weeks - 1 in 1995)

http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/Sources/AMGCOVERS/music/cover200/drc000/c079/c07979fb0pm.jpg

The most Beatles-esque Oasis song, this has spent a total of 54 weeks on the official chart, mainly due to the fact that it isn't on any Oasis album.

Oooh quite a mixture. Many of them made #1 on my personal chart too. :P

I love Whigfield, East 17 and Mariah. I only like a couple of Portishead songs not heard the one you have there though. :P

And can I say that the Loeb is an icon? :smoke:

1995

This is my classic year for music (with 2001) and was one of the most difficult to work out!

Portishead - Glory Box (2 weeks)

http://www.electricpavilion.org/dugout/vaults/reading/mash_portishead.jpg

Another Portishead classic, Glory Box is probably their best known track. The video is from the Roseland Bowl, NYC.

N-Trance - Set You Free (4 weeks)

http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/12globe242.JPG

Club anthem Set You Free has been remixed and re-issued twice since 1995, but the original is best ^_^

Alex Party - Don't Give Me Your Life (4 weeks)

The reason why 90s dance is best is because of songs like this!
