Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

A new month, and a new No.1 single in the country, in the form of Rihanna's

second chart topper, "Umbrella", featuring guest vocals by her label-boss Jay-Z.

She last topped our charts for eight weeks from April 2006 with the track "SOS".

With "Umbrella" topping our charts here in Australia we now join the UK (3

weeks), Ireland (2 weeks) and also the U.S. where the song jumps from 41 to 1

this week. The song also debuts at No.1 on the Download Singles Chart.

"Umbrella" is the first time that the word has appeared in the title of a

No.1 single in Australia, and the song becomes the 923rd chart topper in

Australia. It also becomes the third No.1 in a row for a female act (Avril and

Missy Higgins were the other two), something which hasn't happened since

July-August 2004 when Paulini, Missy Higgins and Cosima had the three No.1's by

females.

There are three new entries to the chart this week, and the second is the

ninth Top 50 Australian single for the first American Idol winner, Kelly

Clarkson. "Never Again" debuts at No.5 and in doing so becomes her sixth Top 10

single, and it's the lead single from her forthcoming third album "My December"

(released June 23rd). The last time that Kelly was on the Aussie chart's was

back in April 2006, when the song "Walk Away" reached No.27.

The third new entry is by a female also, and this time a local lass. Kate

Miller-Heidke debuts at No.44 with her first single "Words", and she has been

compared to Kate Bush and Tori Amos. She starts a national tour this week (6th

June), and her debut album "Little Eve" will be out June 16th.

34 weeks ago, Pink's "I'm Not Dead" (2nd October 2006) album reached the top

of the Australian album charts, mostly due to her having 3 singles in the Top 50

at the time. It only lasted for a single week at the top, and this week whilst

spending it's 53rd week in the Top 8 (never been lower) it reclaims the top

album spot. This is mostly due to her eight week national tour of Australia,

which concludes this week, and is one of the biggest and most thorough tour by

an international female act in Australian history. It's also the biggest gap

between reaching No.1 twice this decade (34 weeks), the previous record holder

was Human Nature's "Reach Out: The Motown Record" which had a gap of 20 weeks

between hitting No.1 twice. Pink will probably only retain the No.1 spot for a

single week, as Powderfinger's new album is out this week.

Usually when an album comes out, the lead single from the album drops off in

sales, but with the release of Dean Geyer's debut album "Rush" coming in at No.7

as the highest new entry this week, his lead single "If You Don't Mean it"

climbs back up 2 places to No.12, mostly helped by it being one of the two

biggest climbers on the Download Charts this week (the other big climber is

Candice Alley's "Before You Go").

With Mika in the country this weekend (one show in Sydney last night {June

2nd}), his album becomes the biggest climber on the album charts this week,

"Life in Cartoon Motion" jumps from No.32 to No.18.

Coming in at No.27 is "Carry On" by Chris Cornell, former Soundgarden

frontman. It's his second album, and second Top 50 album, his first coming in

September 1999 when "Euphoria Morning" cracked the Top 40 nationally. Whilst

right behind him at No.28 is the companion album to the TV Series "Choir of Hard

Knocks".

This is a list of the No.1 albums in Australia for the past 42 years.
