Posted June 5, 200718 yr Jarvis criticises TV talent shows Former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has criticised TV talent shows such as Pop Idol and the X Factor, saying the winners never have "good voices". Speaking to the Radio Times, the 43-year-old said he thinks contestants only get through if their voices betrayed "zero personality". "It saddens me because I love pop music and these shows prove that it's become an industrialised process," he said. Cocker recently released his first solo album called Jarvis. The star, who led one of the biggest bands of the Britpop era, said: "They never pick people with great voices. They pick people who show off how many notes they can fit into a 10-second period. "A great voice expresses something and gives you some idea of the personality behind the voice. There's zero personality in the voices of any of the people who sing on these shows." The Sheffield-born singer admitted he would "be straight out" if he appeared on a TV talent show. "The kind of pop I was brought up on is over," he said. "The pop charts used to be where everything happened. Now the most interesting stuff is happening outside in the independent music sector." Jarvis Cocker invaded Michael Jackson's Brits performance in 1996 He also confessed he regretted the publicity he received following the stage invasion of Michael Jackson's performance at the Brits in 1996. "There is an obsession with celebrity in our society, but I think people are starting to realise that it really isn't very nice," he said. He said he was disappointed people still remembered the stunt. "I would rather people remember me for what I create," he added. Cocker will play at the Royal Festival Hall on 23 June as part of the Meltdown festival. the beeb said this
June 5, 200718 yr Spot on Jarvis... He's correct, real Pop Music used to be something to get excited over, now it's just Factory Farming and controlled by scum like Cowell and Walsh.... <_<
June 5, 200718 yr "There is an obsession with celebrity in our society At least he would never go on a show doing something pointless to stay in the public eye. like Celeb Big brother of the jungle thing...he only goes on quality shows like 'Celebrity' Stars in Your Eyes as Rolf Harris...  silly man..famous for arse flashing.
June 5, 200718 yr Well said Jarvis. Jarvis Cocker has done 1000 times more for the benefit of British culture than the cancer that are Simon Cowell & Louis Walsh have ever done.
June 5, 200718 yr I despise Simon Cowell! He has no imagination. 7 of the 11 'Rat Pack' Covers on Ray Quinn's Album were also on Westlife's 2004 'Rat Pack' Album! ('Allow Us To Be Frank'). Indeed - Tracks 1 & 2 are exactly the same on both Albums! Simon has connections with both Acts! He signed Westlife to BMG, & he is Ray's Manager. You can see that he has no idea about even choosing different Covers, by this fact! All he can do is pick the same old Songs! He likes, 'Unchained Melody' - as do I - but, that does not mean that he had to be behind 3 versions of it, by 'his' Acts! He Promoted Robson & Jerome's version in 1995, then got Gareth Gates to Cover it in 2002, then got Il Divo to Cover it on their 'Ancora' Album, in 2005. Simon wouldn't know what imagination was if his life depended on it! Simon also seems to have a problem with any Act that is different - that stands out. He has said that he dislikes Bob Dylan, & has no idea what is special about David Bowie or Kate Bush. On top of this, he has said, (USA TV), that 'He' has 'sold' 100 Million Records, in the past 5 Years, & that this means he should be paid 5 times as much as Bruce Springsteen. This from a guy who sits on his arse on TV, makes unkind comments about people, then gets 'his' Acts to do Covers and/or Ballads - until they don't sell enough Records for his liking - and then he dumps them! He's a joke - he really is! Sorry - but anyone in the UK Music industry who sees Simon as ruining Music is 100% spot on. The Man has done nothing to add to creativity in UK or USA Music. He is just a big mouth, who thinks it is clever to get 'his' Acts to do other peoples Songs. As to the way he mocks how some people look on 'American Idol', well it would serve him right if he ever got disfigured in an accident, & a load of people like him, then started telling him how 'ugly' he looks! I doubt if Simon would like it - but he thinks it is OK to humiliate other people like that. (He called one boy a, 'Bush Baby', because he had big eyes. Simon is not a very nice person). He's not clever, not funny, & the main thing that he needs is a Gag for his Mouth, & a Bra for his Man Boobs!!!! Louis Walsh is just as bad. His idea of being a Music Act Manager is to choose what Covers Westlife do! And to say the same things to his favourite Acts on, 'The X Factor'. Like, 'You own dat stage!' And, 'Dat is the best performance oive seen in me loife!' And:, 'What kin I say? You are the stor of the noight, me laddo!' And:, 'Oi never taught I'd say dis, but you are a reel chumpion, me boy!' And, (about Westlife), 'Dey are the best grope in the World! Oi say dat with me hind on me hurt!' (PUKE!). Edited June 5, 200718 yr by zeus555

You are an incredibly ignorant person if you think that's all Jarvis is famous for.... Take it you've never actually heard Pulp then.... The Celeb "Stars In Their Eyes" was just a one-off for a laugh.... He didn't try and make a career out of it... He made a career out of being a damn good songwriter.... Which is more than can be said for the musically worthless sacks of Sh"te that come out of these "talent" shows.....

Which is more than can be said for the musically worthless sacks of Sh"te that come out of these "talent" shows..... I know the above remark wasn't addressed to me personally, but I think you're incredibly rude to say that as I'm sure SWF knows all about Cocker's output in his songwriting career, as do I. The only song and album I ever rated and bought, was Common People and Pulp, compared to a lot of singer/songwriters his material has been pretty abysmal since then imo. I'm sure to the majority of the GBP, he's more famous for baring his arse at the Brits to Michael Jackson, than for his songwriting ability. I agree with you though that the majority of talent show contestants, winners and losers etc are worthless sacks of $h!te, but not all of them are and I hate Cowell and co probably more than you do. But there has been and still are, a few excellent and very capable singer/songwiters/musicions to rise above from where they originated from, albeit these ones have had the intelligence and determination to dump Cowell on his arse and do their own thing, Cowell totally ruined the concept of the original Pop Idol when he decided to further his own career by creating X-Factor.
June 6, 200718 yr I despise Cowell and his ruthless pursuit of promoting Cowell at the expense of any talent he may actually find. but some acts do have talent and intelligence..Will got rid of that useless ego maniac and is now in his 6th year of success..that's no mean feat in an industry that chews you up spits you out faster that you can blink. Simon Cowell supports only one act..himself..he has been giving people the same act on national TV for over five years and he's still raking it in..people watch him say the same things over and over and over and still pay him very well for doing it. they vote for acts they don't for the most part intend to support after the show has faded...those who vote these people into the limelight for a short time and them cease to support and often crow at their demise are as much to blame as Cowell for the state of things..Imo. You are an incredibly ignorant person if you think that's all Jarvis is famous for.... Take it you've never actually heard Pulp Jarvis's legacy to music is not the few note worthy songs he did during britpop over decade ago ...but arse flashing a megastar which is what Jackson was at the time.....nice one. <_< . No I'm not an incredibly ignorant person thanks..but you are most definitely are a condensing one. Can you tell who it is yet? Jarvis Cocker has been whining and he wasn't even singing at the time. Cocker, best known as Britain's premier Rolf Harris impersonator, criticised TV talent shows like Pop Idol and the X Factor, but not Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes, claiming the winners never have "good voices." Will Young was too busy having a successful career to comment, while Leona Lewis is too young to remember Britpop, Girls Aloud were too drunk to give a f*** and Kelly Clarkson too American to count. Old-enough-to-be-your-father Cocker, 43, cocked, "It saddens me because I love pop music...The kind of pop I was brought up on is over." Remember those days? When your dad said pop music wasn't as good as it was in his day? And you called him a sad old w*n**r living in the past? The Sheffield sham also regrets the publicity surrounding his stage invasion of Michael Jackson's performance at the Brits '96. Jarvis jerked, "I would rather people remember me for what I create." Like his Rolf Harris on Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes. http://glammerocity.blogspot.com/2007/06/d...-200000000.html
June 6, 200718 yr i dont see the problem, if new talent is being discovered, theres nothing boring about someone like Will Young,Leona, Jennifer Hudson or Kelly Clarkson, who are imo some of the best artists in a long time. I do totally agree with all the critiscm on the amount of cover songs that get done, but alot of people who aren't on talent shows and are incredibly famous do thousands of covers aswel. If people don't like them then don't watch.

Even Cocker at half-strength is still a lot better and more worthy of note than anything "X-Factor" will ever produce.... I've not been overly impressed with some of Cocker's post "Different Class" stuff either, but that still doesn't mean that people should talk bollocks about him being only famous for "baring his arse" at Jacko as if this was his only contribution to British music... As if there wasn't actually a good reason for that anyway.... He was sick of the way that c/unt was being indulged, and if you saw the performance Jackson gave, it was sickening, disturbing and downright nasty, as well as unbelievably pompous and pretentious, even Bono would balk at going that far... Having all these little kids come up on stage and hug him, and he was clearly getting off on it.... This, not long after the first set of child abuse allegations... Cocker did what we ALL wanted to do... Well, not quite what I would've done, which would've been to walk up to him and punch the c/unt's lights out..... <_< And I seriously doubt you hate Simon Cowell as much as I do.... My hatred runs so far as to say that we should get them to release Mark Chapman for the day and tell him that Cowell called his pint a puff....

If that lot you just mentioned really ARE the best artists to be discovered in a long time, I truly fear for the future of popular music.... It's not even true anyway.... As you would know if you actually went out there to gigs to discover the real talent instead of just sitting at home being spoon-fed mediocrity from Cowell and Walsh.....
June 6, 200718 yr Music and artist appreciation are subject to each individual taste. what i rate and like others may not..it's always been that way. Cowell IS a parasite..but people watch in their millions thus keeping the parasite in work. if they stopped he would stop. Edited June 6, 200718 yr by Sweetwilliamfan

June 6, 200718 yr Here is that legendary BRITs performance by Michael Jackson. DuOjY15ViiU Michael Jackson - Earth Song Unlike Grimly I've been a fan of Michael Jackson except when he whinges about his childhood, paranoia or in this case makes an appalling messianic song (minus the Led Zeppelin Immigrant's Song intro) & video which this wretched "Look at me I'm the saviour of mankind" performance truly turns the stomach. Personally I think Jarvis Cocker deserves a BRIT for his perfect commentary on this performance.

June 6, 200718 yr OMG - I've only ever seen clips of that performance before, I've always wanted to see it all but never could find it on youtube. Jacko went completelly over the top to say the least, and I am a huge fan of his music. Btw, what part did Jarvis come in on?

Personally I think Jarvis Cocker deserves a BRIT for his perfect commentary on this performance. When I was a kid I loved Michael Jackson... "Thriller" was the coolest Pop video I'd ever seen as a 10-year old (and it is really still a benchmark video, elevating the Pop Promo to an artform, and getting John Landis to direct was just inspired), the "Thriller" album was one of the first albums I'd ever had bought for me... And then he turned into some horrific monster, some reject from a George Romero film....

At least they are not trying to be something that they are not, like a Carole King or a James 'noteviljazzfunkman' Taylor or Jackson Browne, when they are just a pop act like a Darius or a Jessica Garlick and have been equalily manufactured. James 'notdeadyet' Morrison compared to Will Young i actually think "He Ain't No Competition" -3e6qUJKwrA Will is actually better but actually both are the same kinda thing   *note: on Norman Jay's soul, funk and house cuts for Virgin Trains James Morrison turns up
