I still think Will Young's version of Light My Fire was great as it was a fresh twist on an old classic.

So do I and no amount of people telling me how "shockingly terrible" they think it is, will make me change my mind from preferring it to whoever sang it first, regardless of who it was.

Will's LMF was based on Jose Felicano's version. I remember hearing Jose's version blaring out from the speakers from the Sunderland air show a few years back & thinking what an awful racket. :P

Having said that LMF isn't one of my fav Will tracks.

Well it's not one of mine now but I still like it and the video based on model Edie Sedgwick was really cool and classy I thought. B)

I agree suggy it is really classy & was the first of Will's briliant videos.

 err... that'll be The Doors, then.... you know, legendary band.... everybody knows them kind of thing. Probably one of the most influential bands of all time, with one of the best known and most charismatic frontmen ever, and who still to this day sell gargantuan amounts of records and are revered by... well, everyone who loves music.

Ahem.

It's shockingly terrible that you seem totally unaware of The Doors and Jim Morrison tbh, Morrison who had the kind of charisma and sheer magnetism that the likes of Will Young, Darius Danesh and all these other manufactured muppets can only fukkin' dream of, even a drunk, stoned out of his box Morrison is still more charismatic than most of the utter losers that pass for Pop Stars these days..... There was even a film made about them, with Val Kilmer playing Jim (very well IMO)...... Ring any bells....???

THE MAN WAS A GOD MADE INTO HUMAN FORM.....

Will Young doing a Doors song is a bit like the Ernie Braithwaite Skiffle and Kazoo Combo doing a cover of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkieries"......

Jester, how is it "fresh" when he was merely copying what Jose Feliciano did in the early 70s....??? Sorry, I dont consider a virtual carbon copy of an almost 40 year old cover to be a particularly 'fresh take'..... A "fresh" and more contemporary 00s take would be someone like Aphex Twin or System of a Down having a go....

How patronising. Of course we are aware of Jim Morrison & the Doors but as you have already stated that wasn't who Will based his version on. This was early days for Will, in fact during Pop Idol. Since then any cover Will has performed has been given his unique interpretation. Hey Ya being a prime example.

I an earlier post you said this

TBH, I dont really have the issue with Will Young I once did.... He aint my thing and never ever will be, but he broke free of the vice-like grip of Cowell and actually managed to stand on his own two feet, so fair dos.....

So please don't backtrack now with insulting comments about Will being a manufactured muppet.

LMF may have been very close to Jose's interpretation but Will's vocals certainly outshine the former.

The South Bank show was dedicated to Jarvis and of course had to make big of the MJ incident.

I have to say I didnt think that Pulp were that great, I liked a couple of their tracks, but put them along side Suede at the time.

Jim Morrison was a genuis, but like so many - had a deeply troubled soul, he charisma by the bucket load, IMO no one could surpass his LMF.

Darius has charisma for me, and he has never been a muppet for anybody, that is why I am a fan, I have NEVER been a fan of manufactured pop, only people who write songs that connect with me and people who have a spark of something different to anyone else. He has always said life's an adventure and will do what he wants - I pray he never has such unhappiness in his personal "real" life that makes so many artists so appealing to the masses, I can think of quite a few who have real problems coping with their lives but are seen as icons to the public. I know that Darius sees contentment in real life as being what counts not the persona that grabs the GBPs imagination..

and much as I loved JM, I wouldn't wish his life on anyone, Darius is 27 next year......

I also said in that previous post that I despised his lame-ass cover of a cover of LMF.....

And, the reply wasn't actually directed at you.. YOU may know who did the original, but I rather got the impression that the actual poster I was replying to did not... To wit when they said - "regardless of who it was", kinda implies a lack of knowledge on the poster's part dunnit....?

And it matters not whether you believe Will's vocal performance "outshines" the Jose Feliciano version, it still does not alter the fact that he just carbon-copied SOMEONE ELSE'S INTERPRETATION, I dont call that particularly creative, or putting your own individual stamp on a song...

The "manufactured muppets" thing was just me trying to make a point about how Pop Music has generally gone totally downhill since the days of Jim, and indeed the era that Jarvis Cocker is talking about - the 80s... He's correct to criticise it... Okay, Will Young is an acceptable exception to the general rule regarding Talent Show products, but I still feel that he is very far cry from the likes of Jim, Lennon/McCartney, Morrissey/The Smiths, Depeche Mode, or yes, Jarvis Cocker....

Well, obviously I don't particularly wish an early death upon Darius even if I do find him a bit dull.... , I was merely making a point that most of these talent show peeps seem to totally lack that special thing that makes an artist truly great as the likes of Jim Morrison had, and the likes of Morrissey and Jarvis (who are thankfully still with us) definitely DO have.... Darius himself just seems to have given up on an actual Pop career and is taking to the West End stage as your sig points out... Might be a good move for him tbh... I heard some of Darius' stuff, can't say it left much of an impression to be honest, but still, fair dos on him for actually trying....

It's a shame how many people think Will Young fashioned his cover himself. Of course it's all Simon Cowell and other 'pop impresarios' at work.

"Nobody buying singles knows who Jose Feliciano is, so you can do a cover of his cover and then we'll sell it as a unique interpretation of the Doors song. Everyone's heard of the Doors."

Some years later...

"Hey Mutya, you don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of making it without doing a cover....OR we could rip off a song everyone's forgotten about and interchange the old lyrics for a new batch with the exact same structure. BUT we'll have a little bit after the first chorus with a pointless filter. Now, where's my exorbitant consultant's fee?"

These people feed on other people's ignorance.

I admit I didn't realise that Will's cover was a cover of a cover so to speak, so I stand corrected. However, I do still like it.

How did this get to be a debate about Will's LMF anyway?

Spot on Richie... Cowell really is the scum of the Earth, the true enemy of music lovers... Why oh why cant we just let Mark Chapman out for the day....? Tell him summat like "Simon Cowell called your mum a slag, here's a gun and his address....". Would really be doing a favour to Music fans everywhere.....

Simon Cowell fashioning anything original. Now you are having a laugh & showing your ignorance.

I agree in the early days of Pop Idol & have said earlier Will will have had less input into song's interpretations. That being said he was the only contestant in the show that did change the songs he was asked to perform so he must have had some input. He even managed to make an awful Westlife cover just about bearable. Since then along with the help of his musical director Joseph Ross Will has made many unique interpretations of songs. Surprisingly enough I dislike covers myself unless they are interpreted differently from the original or vocally better. I know I'm biased but since loosing the Cowell shackles Will delivers on both scores.

Dont quite understand how you can possibly think that Richie was implying that Cowell was fashioning anything original..... I'd say he was asserting the exact opposite in his post.... And I repeat - there is NOTHING unique, original or fresh in Will Young's "interpretation" of LMF - whomever was the 'mogul' directing it.... Jose Feliciano's 1971 take on it was unique and fresh, Will Young's version is a pale imitation of that....

Patronising??? nah man i would have put it down as Sarcastic  but theres nothing wrong with that. maybe one for Charlie Brooker's Ignopedia

Ok so maybe I read his post wrongly & if you read mine I think you will find I'm agreeing with you that LMF wasn't unique but it does tick the box for me as vocally superior.

Anyway I'll leave it there as we seem to be going round in circles.

In answer to your reply, when I posted "regardless of who it was" I mean't exactly that, of course I knew who Jim Morrison was and as it wasn't even his version of LMF that Will sang, I really don't know what your beef is about? Will sang it on a talent show in the infancy of his career, he had a choice of three songs to pick from, Wham's -I'm Your Man, The Doors -Light My Fire (he chose Jose's version to sing) and George Michael's- Careless Whisper, if Will hadn't won Pop Idol it would have been his first single. Of course Will is a "far cry" from the (as you put it) the likes of Jim, Lennon/McCartney, Morrisey, Depeche Mode and Jarvis Cocker, mainly because a) he's not dead, past it, (or living in it) b)his music career is only in it's 6th year c) Will's main love is Jazz and Soul and d) he get's you wound up enough to post such verbal $h!te about him. :yahoo:
