Chart Commentary from Gavin Ryan @ musicworldonline.com.au

A new No.1 single, and the second only song of the year to debut at No.1, and they were both by teenager's.

18 year old Robyn Rihanna Fenty from Barbados, better know as Rihanna takes her third single straight in to the No.1 spot this week with "SOS". Her first single "Pon de Replay" hit No.6 in October 2005, whilst her second single debuted and peaked at No.9 in the last week of January 2006, "If it's Lovin' That You Want (No.41 this week).

She becomes the first ever Barbadian (?) to reach No.1 in Australia, and is the first solo female artist to debut or be at No.1 single Kate DeAraugo was aloft in December 2005 with "Maybe Tonight".

Also the female at No.1 before Kate has a tie-in with this week's No.1. The previous female to debut at No.1 before Kate was Madonna with "Hung Up" (Nov 14, 2005), and she used a sample in that tune from Abba. Well this weeks No.1 also uses a sample, that of Soft Cell's February 1982 No.1, "Tainted Love".

This is the fifth time that a different song, with the same title, has been to No.1 in Australia. Previously SOS was a No.1 on January 12, 1976 for one week for Abba, the other four songs are "Angel" (Shaggy / Madonna), "I Should Have Known Better" (Beatles / Jim Diamond), "Power of Love (Huey Lewis & The News / Jennifer Rush; Celine Dion), and Venus (Frankie Avalon / Shocking Blue; Bananarama).

The song "SOS" is at No.2 on this week's U.K. charts after debuting at No.5 last week, and on the Billboard charts, it sits at No.32.

The next highest new entry comes in at No.14. The fourth single from this week's No.1 album "Back to Bedlam" is James Blunt's "Wiseman". His first single from the album "High" failed to make the Top 50 nationally when releases in June 2005, but it's follow-up's did make some impact on the charts, "You're Beautiful" made No.2, and the third single "Goodbye My Lover" reached No.3. (this week at No.15).

The first solo single for Oscar Award winning actor Jamie Foxx comes in at No.22 "Unpredictable", which features guest vocalist Ludacris. Jamie won the Best Male Lead Actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the biopic "Ray" in 2004. But he has also been on the charts previously as guest vocalist on "Slow Jamz" with Twista (No.26, April 2004),and the No.1 single from late October 2005, "Gold Digger" with Kanye West. This track is taken from his second solo album "Unpredictable", his first was the 1994 "Peep This".

Jamie was first a musician before he was an actor. His Grandmother got him started on the piano at the age of 3, and he only stopped playing in his teens when he realised that he was better at sports than music. But he always dabbled in the music. The single peaked at No.8 on the U.S. Billboard charts.

Coming in at No.42 is an EP by remixes Dirty South, which features the song that has been at No.1 for the past month on the ARIA Club Charts, "It's Too Late" by Dirty South and Evermore.

Equalling the eleven week stretch set by the "Moulin Rouge" Soundtrack back in mid 2001, this week sees James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" obtain it's 11th non-consecutive week at No.1. It's not likely to fall off anytime soon, as he's touring the country at the moment, so next week he'll probably take over as the second longest running No.1 this decade. Delta Goodrem's 29 weeks at No.1 with "Innocent Eyes" is in first place.

The highest new entry on the albums chart comes in at No.4. "Songs from Black Mountain" is the first studio album from Live since 2003, and their last charting album was the No.4 hit "Awake: The Best of Live" from November 2004. And the second new entry onto the charts comes in at No.23, Nofx's "Wolves in Wolves' Clothing".

Making a giant leap up the charts, Shannon Noll's "Lift" goes from 34 to 15, and another local artist, albeit different in many ways to Nollsy, Alfio's debut album "Tranquilita" goes from 42 to 30 this week. Australian born to Italian parents, he sings in Italian, Spanish and English and was classically trained.
