Charts Commentary

True to form, Prince holds off all challenges to remain at number one with his slick R&B track Love. However, for the first time ever, the number one and number two tracks share the same name as Keyshia Cole rises 4-2 with her R&B ballad Love, which misses out on number one by 3 plays, the closest margin since 2005, when Mariah Carey's We Belong Together stopped 2Pac feat. Elton John from returning to number one with Ghetto Gospel by 2 plays. At number three comes another riser, LL Cool J feat. Jennifer Lopez, rising 8-3 with Control Myself, becoming his highest charting single since Hush made number 6 last year. However, LL Cool J's highest charting single ever was Ain't Nobody was number one for two weeks in March 1997.

Slightly further down, Shakira climbs 15-5, with a little help from Wyclef Jean, who collaborates with her on her new single Hips Don't Lie. Can this beat the number two peak of her previous single, Don't Bother?

At number 7 comes a new entry, from Busta Rhymes with Touch It, which samples Daft Punk's Technologic, which peaked at number 7 in July 2005. This song is unique in the fact that it entered in the top ten, as singles hardly ever debut in the top ten, and those that do usually end up going to number one. This is the fourth top ten debut of 2006 - the others coming from Prince (Black Sweat, #10), Gnarls Barkley (Crazy, #4) and Rihanna (SOS, #7), which all made number one in the following weeks. So far, no songs have debuted at number one.

And slightly further down at number 10 comes the largest climb of the year so far, a 29 place 39-10 climb from Orson, who score their second top 10 hit with Bright Idea. Can this emulate the success of No Tomorrow, which made number one for two weeks in February?

The 11-20 area sees 3 new entries from Infernal, Chris Brown and Christina Milian.

At number 14 comes the debut single from Swedish dance act Infernal, with Paris To Berlin. Could this herald a return for dance music in the charts? The last golden age of dance music resulted in number ones for Erik Prydz and Uniting Nations in 2004. Since then, dance music has had limited success, with Hi-Tack and Meck scoring the biggest success since then, both reaching peaks of number 2 in January this year.

At number 17 comes the second single from Chris Brown with Yo (Excuse Me Miss), who reached number two with his last hit, Run It!. The young Virginian entered at number 17 with that song in November 2005 - could this song better the heights of that one?

At number 18 comes the return of a familiar face, Christina Milian, who so far has had two number ones on this chart, with Dip It Low in April 2004, and When You Look At Me in March 2002. Could her new track, Say I become her third number one on the Tyron1 Top 40?

Next weeks main contenders for number one appear to be as follows:

Keyshia Cole - Love

LL Cool J feat. Jennifer Lopez - Control Myself

Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie

Busta Rhymes - Touch It

Orson - Bright Idea

Infernal - Paris To Berlin

Christina Milian feat. Young Jeezy - Say I

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California

Eminem - Shake That

Nerina Pallot - Everybody's Gone To War

Pussycat Dolls feat. Snoop Dogg - Buttons

Mariah Carey feat. Snoop Dogg - Say Somethin'
