NBC will offer on July 1 what promises to be one of the biggest events of the summer: "Concert for Diana," hosted by Matt Lauer. Princes William and Harry are throwing the celebration to honor their mother, who died 10 years ago.

The princes talked to Lauer in an interview that can be seen Monday on "Today" and "Dateline NBC," which will air at 10 p.m. Watch a preview, starting Friday, at www.todayshow.com.

Diana would have turned 46 on July 1.

Set to perform in Wembley Stadium in London are Elton John, Rod Stewart, Tom Jones, Bryan Ferry, Duran Duran, P. Diddy, Joss Stone, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Nelly Furtado, Lily Allen, Will Young  , James Morrison, Natasha Bedingfield, The Feeling, Orson, Status Quo, Take That and Roger Hodgson.

In announcing the acts, NBC offered this quote from Prince William: "We wanted to have this big concert ... full of energy, full of the sort of fun and happiness which I know she would have wanted. And on her birthday as well, it's got to be the best birthday present she ever had."

The concert telecast starts at 8 on July 1. At 7, "Dateline NBC" will repeat Lauer's interview with the princes.

I won't ever forget seeing a gorilla for the first time. It really threw me off balance. They're four-legged animals, but with very human faces and eyes filled with so much intelligence, thought and sensitivity. I wasn't expecting that to be such a shock.

One female gorilla literally followed me up and down the wire. It was very sweet to have that kind of interaction. I think she took quite a shine to me.

What I've learned about gorillas is overwhelming. Every year thousands are being eaten by people, are losing their habitats, or are being wiped out by a deadly virus called Ebola – as many as 30,000. I find that really scary.

I started my trip in a Cameroon market. About 15 to 20 gorillas a day are sold for bush meat in markets like this all over Africa. In the forest, the scale of the crisis is obvious. It's like Cameroon is being stripped bare to provide wood for our floors. It felt like a war zone. The roads built for logging are providing a route in for commercial hunters and a route out for bush meat.

The conservationists I met were wonderful people, often volunteers living in pretty extreme conditions. Projects like the Mikongo project, supported by the Zoological Society of London, are doing vital research, monitoring the gorilla’s health and working out how best to protect them.

You get a lot from seeing these animals and I’ve been thinking a lot about why. There’s an innocence and a purity to all these different forms of life. If that's gone, then the world will be a much bleaker place.

How you can help

You can help conservation projects protect the gorilla by donating to the BBC Wildlife Fund.

Find out more about where your money goes.

In the UK similar problems caused by poaching and logging theft affect our wildlife and habitats too. If you want to do more to help you can make a promise.

Field notes

Approximately 100,000 western lowland gorillas now remain in the wild

Each year between one to five million tonnes of bush meat is taken from the Congo Basin

The Congo Basin loses about 1.5 million hectares of forest every year

In some areas of central Africa, the Ebola virus is estimated to be responsible for reducing gorilla populations by as much as 90%

great interview...great to see him and hear him  ..fantastic pant shot..
