Brilliant comments for Will in the press, the spaceman pic is funny.

Why Will is too big for Leeds

He's toured the nation and racked up millions in record sales, but after four whirlwind years he can still vividly recall his forays to Leeds. Rod McPhee chatted to Will Young about his latest round of concerts and why the absence of an arena means he can't return to the city any time soon.

WILL Young has a remarkable memory.

He was last in Leeds in 2002, still paying his dues to Simon Cowell on the nationwide Pop Idol tour. Now aged 27, his recollections should be nothing more than a blur of hit records, gigs and TV appearances.

Yet when asked to recall the city in any detail he instantly passes the test.

"Yes, I remember going to a little cafe under a bridge, it was full of art work."

Was it Arts Cafe on Call Lane? I suggest.

"Yes that's right, Arts Cafe, it was lovely. I just went there on my own and read a book quietly in the corner. I have a knack of, whichever city I'm in, finding the nicest cafe there is.

"If anyone ever wants to find me then that's how – I'll be in the nicest cafe that particular place has, I guarantee it."

A tip which Will might have best kept to himself. When his career was in its infancy he could perhaps get away with relaying such information, but now? Well, he certainly doesn't need to help his army of fans find him, a hardcore handful probably know exactly where he is at any given time of the day.

"I just have a good memory," he continues. "I seem to recall a lot of obscure things, especially if they're special in some way, and I seem to remember that cafe very well."

Young doesn't lie. When quizzed further he can readily recall his last trip to these parts – an open air concert just down the road at Harewood House, August 7, 2004.

He said: "It was probably the biggest crowd I'd ever performed to and in absolutely beautiful surroundings as well.

Helicopter

"I came in by helicopter because I'd been at my friend's wedding that day, all very exciting. I was still wearing my suit jacket as well wasn't I?"

He was indeed, although when he told the audience on the night many wondered if his claim was in fact a joke. But he confirms he really had left his friend's wedding reception to be flown straight to the gig.

Will can also recall giving a young couple, who'd wed at Harewood House that day a gift to remember by bringing them on stage and serenading them as they danced before a crowd of 15,000 people.

"I really love doing things like that," he added. "It's nice just to throw stuff like that in there, something to remember.

"Unfortunately you can't really do that when you're on an arena tour, everything runs to a tight programme and there's less room for manoeuvre."

Which is a pity given that Will is preparing to embark on his latest arena tour – a tour which, due to the absence of a sizeable venue, means that he won't be making an appearance in Leeds this year.

Keep On Live begins at Cardiff International Arena on September 12 and ends at Wembley Arena on October 2, unfortunately the nearest venues to Leeds will be Manchester Arena and Sheffield Arena.

Will said: "When you start planning for a tour you have to decide whether you want to do one in arenas or more intimate venues.

"My first tour was actually largely done in intimate venues and, besides, I just really wanted to do another arena tour.

"I could just carry on getting on stage with a five piece band and your bog-standard lighting rig, but I want to really put on a show.

"Which inevitably means that we need something the size of an arena to accommodate that and we're naturally limited by the size and availability of venues."

That explanation won't automatically pacify the legions of Will Young fans left heartbroken at Leeds being left out of the tour, particularly as many are fanatical about their hero.

After the Yorkshire Evening Post gave a glowing review of his Harewood House performance we received an unprecedented number of e-mails from his followers thanking us for giving him a fair crack of the whip. When I mention this to him, he seems taken aback.

"Well, thanks for giving me a good review for a start," he said. "It does always surprise how much support I get from the fans, but at the same time it doesn't surprise me anymore.

"My fans are really loyal and its great to have that loyalty particularly if you want any longevity to your career, you need people to stick with you."

So even if they can't make the journey to Manchester of Sheffield, Will's fans in Leeds are likely to forgive him.

Besides, he can more than justify sticking to arenas given the size of show he's been painstakingly planning.

"It's taken me and the team about 18 months to get to this stage," he said. "It's a very theatrical show – probably ten times as theatrical and slick as the last tour.

"Like the last tour it is kind of inspired by the great musicals of the 1940s but whereas the last tour was more theatrical cabaret this one has much more of a retro feel."

This theatrical tilt is fast becoming Young's trademark. Aside from his arthouse-inspired videos and the last tour, there's his recent appearance in wartime movie Mrs Henderson Presents.

Comedy

Then there's the latest addition to his CV – stage acting. This week Will confirmed he'll be taking a role in Noel Coward's dark comedy The Vortex at Manchester's Royal Exchange in December.

Leaping straight to the theatre will make for a punishing schedule, particularly as he could have taken an easier route and curtailed the scale of the Keep On Live tour.

"Yes but I think it's important to give a good show," he explained. "I could just decide to make as much money as possible and limit costs but I want to be known as a serious artist and show what I'm capable of.

"And as an artist if you want to be around for any length of time you want to forge a name for yourself live and offer something which can rival the other big tours that are around."

Of course putting on a big show doesn't guarantee a favourable response – even Will acknowledges there's no telling how a crowd will react.

He said: "Yes, it's strange, sometimes no matter what you do an individual performance can seem a bit flat even though you might expect it to have been mindblowing.

"Equally I've done concerts where I haven't expected too much and then been blown away. But I suspect that that is often down to how I'm feeling on any given occasion and how I perceive things rather than how they necessarily are."

One thing Will is sure off: northern audiences rock.

"I really do think there is a difference," he said. "I was told this before, that audiences in the north are far more, how do you put it, vocal.

"And, although you can have just as good a crowd in the south as you can anywhere, as a general rule you get a much bigger reaction from people in the north – they seem a lot less repressed."

In the main paper in the People section it has a cartoon of Will that exaggerates his features but doesn't really get his attactiveness (ok I know that's what cartoons are meant to do). I'm sorry but I can't scan it. It says:

" Will Young's metamorphosis from twinkly pop singer to actor continues. After his big screen role in MHP, Young, pictured, is to make his stage debut at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester in January as the lead in Noel Coward's the Vortex. Young is stepping into seriously big shoes. Coward himself played the role of the dashing, drug addicted Nicky Lancaster when it first played in 1924 and Ivor Novello was in the 1927 silent film version".

And we know what they say about men with big shoes

Thanks for the articles BYM+M's & munchkin. Great to have so much positive press for Will at the moment.

I was at Harewood House too suggy. To date it is one of my fav Will gigs. He looked so handsome in his wedding attire  & his voice as always was out of this world.

The only downside was trying to find our way back to the car in such a huge crowd & complete darkness.

This new theatre role is certainly getting plenty of press attention. :cheer:

Will Young set to tread the boards

Step forward Will Young, serious theatrical thespian. The lisping, self-effacing Pop Idol winner is to make his stage acting debut as an effeminate Twenties drug-addict in a Noel Coward role once played by Sir John Gielgud.

The singer - who last year appeard in his first film, Mrs Henderson Presents - will take on the lead role of musician Nicky Lancaster in the Coward play, The Vortex, at Manchester's prestigiuous Royal Exchange Theatre.

It was the play the made a star of Coward - then a little-known playwright who took on the same role in 1924 in the savage portrayal of the hedonism of the time.

Will, 27, is no doubt hoping that embracing the meaty part - the young Gielgud took over from Coward in the original production - will similarly establish him as a major acting talent.

"Will received good reviews for his acting debut as a gay theatre singer alongside Dame Judi Dench in Mrs Henderson Presents and then quickly got himself a theatrical agent. The theatre is really where you can prove your acting credentials" says our thesp source.

"The play is quite dark and explores the 'youth vortex of beastliness', centring on the relationship of Will's character, Nicky, and that of his vain and vacuous mother, Florence."

The play is due to open next January to coincide with the theatre's 30th anniversary.

"Will did a stunning audition and I am really excited about what he will bring to the character and the production," enthuses associate director Jo Combes.

The role of Florence has not yet been cast.

Openly gay Will has had huge success in his singing career since he won Pop Idol four years ago. He sang at the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, had the fastest-selling debut single in pop history and has produced four albums.

But the singer - who is rumoured to be intereted in entering into a civil partnership with his boyfriend of six months - has recently stated that his future lies in acting.

"I enjoy the industry more," he has said. "I think I'm better suited to it. I'd miss the singing but there are areas where it wears me down".

Will on BRMB on Monday

After playing WAI this morning Elliot said that Will had promised to call them on Monday

Blimey, I can't keep up

This just posted on Devoted by Bumbling - from Popbitch!

Will Young in a pub in Notting Hill. He was with a rather pretty european sounding chap. In real life he is actually rather tall and built, which was a bit of a surprise, and hearing his voice is a little bit like being goosed by Donald Sinden. Sadly he failed to realise he was completely in love with me and left after one drink, which was probably precisely the amount of time it took him to realise he was in a gay bar.

:D

And we thought we were going into a quiet period!!!
