The press often do that about Will though (and others of course) - either take things out of context or make out he's either on his own or just with one person, when there's a whole group. Nice set of pics though - haven't seen some of them before.

Due to start at 1pm - 2pm today (in about 5mins time) on "The Hits" music channel, most of Will's videos will be shown and he'll be talking about the making them etc, :D if you're on Sky it's channel no358 I'm not sure about freeview or NTL, I'll tape it as I missed the start last time it was shown.

Do we have a right to know the sexuality of our favourite popstars?

Anyone who went to one of the recent Take That concerts will have heard the band subtly exposing the restraints put on them a decade ago by "the Management". Amongst a dozen or so "requirements" of the band members, Take That hinted that in the 1990s they were strongly encouraged to stay single, and be "ambiguous about their sexuality" so as not to alienate any fan-bases they had.

At the news that Lance Bass has just come out, one has to wonder why the 27 year old, who is in a "very stable" relationship thought that coming out sooner would have affected the popularity of his pop group N'SYNC. He said: "I had four other guys' careers in my hand and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said [that I was gay] it would overpower everything." A fan blogged about the announcement: "I read the headline on CNN and thought 'no $h!t' and the sky is blue." I think (s)he is referring to the fact that being gay in a boy band is not a new phenomenon.

There does appears to be a contradiction at play, however. Take That, none of whom are gay, were told to pretend they might be; and young men such as Bass feel it's their duty to keep schtum in case anyone takes offence.

As a teenage girl I was honestly shocked at George Michael's sensational coming out - being splashed on the front pages of the red-tops for committing a lewd act in a public toilet, and later properly coming out in an interview with Parkinson in 1998.

It wasn't that fact that he was gay that upset me; it was more that I felt I had been duped into fancying someone whom, I could daydream, maybe, just maybe, might one day fancy me back.

Careless Whisper by Wham! topped the chats in 1984, and for 14 years after that, Michael's music videos featured scantily clad, slightly sweaty and overly pouty women, whom Michael gazed at, touched, and sang about. So when he revealed that these women had done nothing more titillating for him than say, a good read at bed-time, teenage fans like myself felt that they had been a bit lied to.

Times are different now, and had Michael been born 20 years later he would probably have come out much earlier in his career. Of course, we don't know whether Sony's "pop slave" was forced to keep quiet. But however these various decisions were made, after the Parkinson interview aired sales of Michael's Greatest Hits album doubled

.

In a more recent example, the sexuality of Will Young, who won the first Pop Idol in 2002, was never questioned until after he'd won the competition and released his first single, Evergreen.

He came out just before the tabloids were about to run a story about his being gay; critics complained that he'd kept quiet about his sexuality during the contest so as to be more appealing to the female teenage viewers, who make up a large proportion of the voting public. Young has always adamantly denied doing so, saying he had never hidden, and is very comfortable with, his sexualityYoung has since become the only notable winner of the reality TV pop competitions to have such a flourishing career, with a natural talent and undeniable charisma :yahoo: :

This alone should be proof that being gay doesn't mean Bass would have put his other band mates careers on the line. If Bass didn't want us to know, he needn't have told us at all - I only knew who N'SYNC were because of Justin Timblerlake. But Bass has come out 10 years after the formation of his band, and in essence blamed the judgmental nature of their fans for not coming out sooner, when plenty of artists have already proved that being gay does nothing if not increase sales. Does the public have a right to know whether their favourite pop star is gay or not? And are we really swayed in favour or against artists based on their sexuality?

Nice one  and thanks TT, although I somehow think it's a whole different scenario in the USA regarding acts/singers who are gay, look at the Scissor Sisters, there album only shifted 250k in their own country, while over here it was 1.7 million I think? :o

Thanks BYM+M'S. :cheer:

Love this bit.

Seems Will's decided to take his holiday in this country. Who can blame him with the weather. Wonder if he bought the farmhouse?

HI all

Just had my daughter on the phone, she has gone out tonight to where she worked for 10 years to catch up with everyone.

She was all eager to tell me that William has been in the local pub there (near to Bodmin Moor) for the last two nights.

Apparently been really nice with everyone and lots of people had photos taken with him.

All the staff where she worked know I'm a big fan as they always knew when she had taken my car and teased her about the Will pics on my keyring.

Hope he's picked up a few new fans, am pretty miffed off though to think I am only about 8 miles from where he is, but pretty excited also.

Hope he's having a great holiday.

Sue.

Thanks TT, Bodmin Moor is such a beautiful place and right up Will's street, I'm sure he'll love the place if he's moved there, he'll get a lot more privacy there that's for sure, although if his "local" is on the tourist trail he'll have to get used to people saying hello a lot.

We'd die happy though wouldn't we.

Glad this news snippet is being well received on here. Some people on Devoted are so touchy.

Yup. He wants( and seems to) lead as normal a life as possible away from 'work' but I'm sure if he wanted complete anonymity - the local pub is not the best place to find it

Bodmin is beautiful - I love the West Country.

I was in the Bodmin area in May when I went down to Cornwall/Devon. It's an enormous place - always reminds me of Daphne du Maurier though. Lovely County - wonderful coastline. I'm sure if Will wanted to remain anonymous then he wouldn't be going to the local pub, not once but twice. He'd be somewhere remote - but if my memory serves me right even when in was in the Atlas Mountains a long time ago someone recognised him and did a double take.

There's a feature on the top 50 gay albums of all-time and some well known men have selected their gay album and commented on it

WILL YOUNG: SINGER

And he's chosen GRACE JONES Nightclubbing

And this is what he says

"Along with the likes of David Bowie and Annie Lennox, Grace Jones challenged what gender was and redefined what it was to be a sexual woman. Her look was daring, defying and aggressively masculine whilst being threateningly sexual. Nightclubbing is easily her best post-disco album. Recorded in the Bahamas with reggae legends Sly and Robbie, the beats that were created allowed her to offset her weird and wonderful vocal talent with challenging lyrics. On Walking In The Rain she speaks/sings 'Feeling like a woman, looking like a man' reinforcing her androgyne persona that was reflected and enhanced in the music. As well as confronting gender she was overtly sexual. 'Pull up to the bumper baby, Drive it in between' ....... she aint't talking about parallel parking ! In the end Nightclubbing is scarily queer, deep bass with dubby beats, sexually overt, empowering, challenging but also wildly vulnerable. Wholly gay and wholly identifiable. I thank you."

And the magazine says Deep dub and scary sex from the warrior queen gender bender.

Also accompanied by a small black and white photo of Will in a white vest .
