Will At Electric Proms, UK

Don't miss Will's performance at the BBC Electric Proms 2006. In what promises to be a very special show, he'll be performing 'Home' with the brilliant Nitin Sawhney on 27th October.

For full details on the event and how you can catch it on the radio, TV and online, visit www.bbc.co.uk/electricproms

They're having coverage on both TV and radio - hope Will is on the TV. :yahoo:

Thanks munchkin for bringing it over

something to look forward to when we have the post tour blues :P

You can watch it online apparently. If you go to the site mentioned above and look on the right of the screen, it talks about this. If it isn't televised it might be a good way to see him.

Q&A in this week's Time Out mag Posted by willissuperb on Devoted: :P You couldn't make these answers up - pure Will:

WILL YOUNG

Will Young was born in rural Berkshire 27 years ago and now lives in Notting Hill. He can run 400 metres in under 50 seconds and wears size 10 shoes. He also plays Wembley Arena on Sunday and Monday this week. We asked our favourite Marxist pop crooner about how he spends his time in London.

Where did you have your best ever meal out?

Claridge’s, without a doubt. It was unbelievable. I’m not a foodie but I had some lamb which was a real taste sensation. It was just after I’d, ahem, become a pop star, so someone else was paying. I thought to myself, yes, this is the life…

What’s your favourite gallery?

I go to the National Gallery a lot, because I’m often in the centre of London for meetings and work. I went to an exhibition recently – was it about demons or pagan artwork or something? I seem to remember there being some William Blake works there. Anyway, it was wonderful.

Where do you like to spend Sunday mornings?

It has to be Spitalfields Market. Although I’m not sure about the refurb. It all seems very lovely but I’m wary that it’ll become, I dunno, Hampsteadfied. But there’s something very special about that whole place. I feel like I’m in a market town around there. I also love hanging around Brick Lane.

What’s the best market?

Portobello on a Friday. It’s a very inspiring place to potter around. You get amazing old Victorian clothes. I collect old hats – I’ve got about 50 or 60 – and I’ve found a few great ones there. I bought an old soldier’s hat which I wear on stage for one song. I also bought a child’s picture in Portobello a while ago. It was a painting of an old 1950’s airport. It inspired the opening of my stage show.

What’s your favourite music venue?

The Forum. I’ve seen some great gigs there – Angie Stone, the Scissor Sisters – but every time I go it’s fantastic. Even if they did have a power cut the last time I played there…. In terms of smaller venues, I like the 100Club and the Metro.

Do you get recognised at gigs?

I hope so, otherwise I have to pay to get in! Ha ha! If it’s an indie gig at somewhere like Metro people are often surprised to see me. ‘Oi, what are you doing here? How can you possibly like this kind of music when you make c**p like that?!’ People are so tied up in music and identity sometimes. But generally people are really friendly at gigs. You’re all there to see the same thing.

What’s the best sporting event you’ve been to?

I used to see lots of rugby – I remember a good England game against the New Zealand Barbarians at Twickenham a few years ago. But the best sporting event would have been one that I took part in – a Help a London Child run in Hyde Park. I came 200th out of 5,000. That included hundreds of serious amateur runners, and I was quite pleased with my time.

Is there a specific place in London that never fails to excite you?

Hyde Park. I used to run around there every morning. I love that scene in ‘Neverland’, with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, where they’re in Hyde Park in autumn. I love London in autumn generally – you get the most beautiful colours, the sun’s lowest and the light’s brightest. But Hyde Park looks particularly stunning as you drive down Bayswater.

What’s the most extravagant thing you’ve bought?

I went into a car showroom to buy a Mini. I ended up buying a 1961 Porsche 354 on the spur of the moment. It’s the same model as the one James Dean died in. It’s very beautiful but an entirely random purchase.

What’s the best thing you’ve driven around London?

I was moving house recently and I borrowed a white Transit van. I put a copy of The Sun on the dashboard and I had XFM blaring out on the stereo. I felt so heterosexual, it was amazing. I think I even swore at someone in a petrol station! It was one of the most liberating experiences of my life.

What’s been your most disastrous transport move?

I did have a scooter once that got stolen three times in the space of a week. It was an electric one, but a proper Vespa. I ran out of electricity just as I was driving through Ladbroke Grove, past all these guys on their BMXs who were taking the p***. My cool stakes are questionable, but I just looked such a dick as I crawled past them at a snail’s pace. I was determined not to get off, so I simply crawled home at about 5mph. What a loser. Since then I’ve just taken limos everywhere.

Have you ever cycled in London?

Good lord, no. It looks like fun but I get sweaty enough just walking. I’m a very sweaty person. The photos of me getting off a bike would be hideous. I could ride one of those motorised bikes but you look a bit of a berk. The worst thing is seeing chaps in suits on those ridiculous children’s scooters. There’s a way to demasculinise yourself, by standing on a skateboard with a handle. Just walk, you fool!

And, in the 'Gigs' section for 1 October:

Quote:

*Will Young + Shelley Poole + Anna Krantz - Wembley Arena

Hugely likeable, original 'Pop Idol' champ Young, now successfully remarketed as a classy purveyor of adult-oriented, nu-soul realism with current LP 'Keep On'. Support from ex-Alisha's Attic singer-songwriter Shelley (daughter of chief Tremelo Brian Poole!), now moving into Joni Mitchell-ish territory. Plus young London songstress Krantz. (NB: The Puppini Sisters are no longer playing this tour).

Noticed he says "When I moved recently" :o wonder how recently.

That's what I call an impulse buy - going for a Mini and coming back with a classic car - a Porsche no less  And his scooter was stolen three times - no wonder he got rid. :(

You've probably all seen this interview but I had to fetch it over  He is actually mental

Thaks to Havana for posting this on O/S.

Will has come 2nd in a Yahoo poll to find out which British gay man most people would want as their "gay best friend", according to Heat. He was beaten by Matt Lucas. Elton John came 3rd

I think matt's great but I'd prefer Will sat across from me to look at.

posted by lemonade on the o/s

from the Argus Newpaper in Brighton, prior to his 2 dates there..

Will Young, Brighton Centre, Brighton, September 29 and 30

By Will Marlow

When Will Young shimmies onto the stage of the Brighton Centre, it will be the first time he's appeared here in a professional capacity since 2004.

But, everyone's favourite Pop Idol has stepped out in the city several times recently.

In the past year, he's been spotted in The Lanes and North Laine, shopping in places including The Lavender Room and Red Deli, and splashing about with a surfboard on the beach.

It's not all fun though - when asked for an autograph by a young fan in Duke Street, he came up with a sly plan which backfired. "I came down here to see a friend," he says. "Some people came up to me and I pretended to be someone else. It didn't work well. I got a letter of complaint about it."

continued...

It wasn't the first time the singer has been accused of being a grump. He is known to have a love-hate relationship with fame: "I am very envious of my friends' anonymity," he admits. "I have masses of perks in my life but I do quite miss not being famous, although I have to be careful. I don't want to be one of those moaning people who go, Oh being famous is so awful'.

A fan of classic literature, who studied politics at university, Will is certainly a deep thinker.

"I could talk about being famous for days because I do find it a fascinating subject. I think people underestimate the role it plays in our society. It's a form of control - you can tell people what to wear through celebrity, what music to listen to, what way to be, what way not to be."

Many column inches have focused on Will's love life. He's been linked to a number of men, including a mystery footballer or two, as well as designer Matthew Williamson.

"For some reason they think I'm into sportsmen," laughs Will. "Designers as well. It's like they pick a profession that week and I'm going out with someone from that profession. It'll be hairdressers next."

Has he ever dated a footballer? "No. They just do it when they think someone else is gay. They go, I know what we'll do, we'll make them go out with Will Young'. Why don't they make them go out with George Michael? It makes my personal life sound way more exciting than it is."

But Will's celebrity is only set to get bigger. He's already one of the UK's most popular male singers, second only to Robbie Williams. With his strongest album to date, Keep On, his performance in film Mrs Henderson Presents and forthcoming lead role in the Royal Exchange Theatre's production of The Vortex by Noel Coward, he could easily challenge Robbie for pole position.

"I feel like I'm in this business for the long run," he says.

"There's nothing I'd rather be doing."

Thanks for bringing that over BYM&M's.

Although a lot of it is lifted from other interviews it makes me feel all warm inside hearing him say he's in the business for the long run. :D :cheer:
