IT was one love at G.A.Y as fans went wild for Will Young.

 

Will, who is on a UK tour, showed off his developing six-pack while wearing his tennis gear at the gig in London's Astoria.

 

His dancers seemed to appreciate his nice shorts, too.

Will Young was never going to go down badly at G.A.Y. The fabulously voiced singer, :D 27, donned his tiny shorts, a vest and then a pilots uniform for his gig at London's Astoria.

TRIUMPH OF THE WILL

 

Its easy to forget, in these dark days of The X Facotr and You`re a Star, The impact Will Young had upon the pop world when he won Pop Idol back in 2002.

His debut single, Anything is Possible/Evergreen, entered the charts at No1, selling over a million copies in its first week, going on to become one of the 20 biggest selling singles of all time in the UK. A string of Top 10 hits followed.

Young`s second album, 2003`s Friday`s Child has sold 1.8 million copies, making it the 12th highest selling album this century in the UK.

That the lad from Wokingham, Berkshire with the powerful lungs had turned his back on those trademark big ballads and embraced his first love - soul - only made the success more admirable.

 

FLUKE

But despite all the success, Young just managed to make it through that difficult 3rd album syndrome with Keep On

"With every album, it feels like you`re stepping out there for the first time" smiles the 27 year old singer.

"After the debut single, you had people saying `Well that`s just a fluke, going straight in at No1`

"And then the next single did the same. and again, `Oh, Two times lucky`. Then i was three times lucky. When it came to the first album, From Now On, I was naturally worried that the whole Pop Idol glow had faded away. But it went in at No1.

"And then there were a few more singles and the second album went in at No1.

"Its such a great feeling. Kids who win TV Competitions aren`t supposed to stick around, But i did."

Yet Young seems to have reached a point where he can manage to take on the challenge of a new album, star in his first feature film (The Oscar-nominated Mrs Henderson Presents) and head out on a world tour without hardly breaking a sweat.

It`s the tour, naturally enough, that`s occupying Young`s mind the most these days.

"Ask any performer," He smiles, "it`s the gettin up in front of an audience that makes it all worthwhile.

NERVOUS

 

"You`ll rehearse and rehearse and rehearse, you`ll get nervous before the show, you`ll get a little stage-fright before you walk out there, but once the lights come on and the audience roar goes up, you just enter into someting approaching a trance."

A well-choreographed trance of course: Young`s new show opens with an invitation that we can come fly with him, bounding onstage dressed as a pilot with a dancing aircraft crew behind him.

From there, its pop hits, funky moves and double entendres all the way.

The most surprising thing is just how many screaming middle aged woman come to his shows.

 

KISSES

 

"I think they all want to mother me," he nods. "Or maybe they just want to smother me in kisses. I mean, Who wouldn`t?!"

Young lets out a laugh :lol: , but he`s probably right. He`s just about pop`s sharpest dressed man, and he`s looking dapper today.

His recent move into acting - making his debut in Stephen Frear`s Mrs Henderson Presents as a 1930s singer and dancer who, hey, also happens to be gay - also seem to have come naturally.

"I actually didn`t know who Stephen Freaes was when i first met him", says Young.

"If i had known, i would have probably dribbled into my coffee. This is the guy who made My Beautiful Laundrette, The Snapper, High Fidelity...

"I just saw this funny old geezer who was great to talk to."

Nonetheless, this funny old geezer had Young come back for eight auditions before finally giving him the role of Bertie in this true-life tale about London`s Windmill Theatre becoming, back in the 1930s, the first UK venue to have naked girls on stage.

 

CHALLENGER

 

Which brings us back to the new show - Young`s latest attempt at world domination.

Topping the recent Music Week May Day poll as the most popular British artist of all-time, the magazine recently dubbed Young "the most likely challenger to Robbie Williams for the title of Britain`s biggest male pop idol".

Hmm, sounds like a tall order.

"Isn`t it just?" laughs Young

"I don`t even want to think about such a claim, although it is handy to have for the old press release.

"Robbie`s a friend of mine, and he`s given me advice before on how to handle the whole fame thing, so the idea of trying to steal his crown just isnt a runner."

When the whole fame thing did get too much for Young in 2004, he decided to do something about it - namely, write a thesis on it. Has he managed to finish it yet?

"No, I haven`t, but i do find the whole nature of fame very interesting. We live in celebrity-obsessed times, and the power these people have can sometimes be ridiculous.

"It`s like they`re supposed to be godlike, or have some kind of greater understanding of how the world works, its insane."

Someone who`s never worn his homosexuality on his sleeve, Young stated recently ;"You don`t have to be as camp as Christmas to be gay".

Nonetheless, the video for the single Switch it On, was a pastiche of Top Gun,: a movie that`s become something of a gay classic. Does young feel he needs to make some sort of statement, even if it is Tongue in cheek?

 

PRESSURE

"I don`t know if i feel the pressure to make a statment. I don`t think i was making one with the Top Gun video. I can fly jets! And with this movie, i`m proving that, hey, I can work in theatres. And be gay."

 

As for the all-conquering Pop Idol phenomenon, Young isn`t about to put down the monster that spawned him.

Ask him if he watches any of them and he replies: "I`m just to busy working".

Young is also too busy with his career to find true love.

"It kills me; all the success, this money, and i still haven`t found the man of my dreams.

"When i have my first really big flop, that will give me time , and the humility, to find Mr. Right."

 

Finally with his tour imminent, how come Will is so calm?

"Oh, it`ll all just an act. Inside i`m a nervous wreck, smoking about 50 a day."

 

Bet he would love to be smothered in kisses too :P I wonder if the GMTV clip will be on SkyShowbiz too - my son is hogging the TV at the moment - will have a look later. Soul Sister on Devoted has put up a tiny clip of him shown on GMTV but without any interview.
