A selection of very mainstream stadium rock types. some were grunge, some were punk and post-punk, now most mega selling. however who is the best, who still has the most alternative cred??

U2, Nirvana and U2.

Who voted The Stones as being bigger than U2? Their last album only sold a few million, whilst U2's last sold near 10m. Coldplay and Greeday would make more sence as being competition for biggest band in the world imo.

Green Day, Garbage, Linkin Park, Nirvana and MCR all ace.

Click my sig to vote for a MCR forum. ^_^

I think Green Day were the biggest selling band a couple of years ago but U2 are consistent huge sellers and are the bigger

Nirvana, Nirvana, U2....

To "On Your Shore" - I dunno how you can claim Garbage are more "alternative" than Nirvana tbh.... Nirvana had the Indie background (being on the Sub-Pop label for their first record), Garbage don't, they've always been attached to a major.... Nirvana only signed with Geffen on the recommendation of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore....

well with Garbage you gotta untangle the whole record company thing and licencing deals for each territory. as originally they were on Almo Sounds in the United States and Mushroom elsewhere.

Almo Sounds is like A&M part 2 and was an 'indie' set up by Herb Albert and Jerry Moss when they sold A&M Records for mega money and ended up part of Universal after Edgar Bronfman Jr's involvement.

Korda Marshall is now like one of the main dudes at Warners but once he was in charge of Mushroom and Infectious Records in the UK, the UK offshoot of an Aussie Indie. Mushroom was an indie label from Australia that tried its luck in the UK market, but no doubt expansion plans f***ed up its finances so had to sell some shares to Rupert Murdoch, who you might know from his MySpace site. think in the end Muchroom ran back to Australia a failure and sold its UK firm to Warners. Back home Mushroom merge with another indie called Festival to form FMR to form like a super indie or a minimajor (like Virgin, A&M, Chrysalis Records of the 1970s).

However this didnt last long and ended up with more financial f***ups, so they too had to sell out to Warner Music in Australia (with indie labels such as New Zealands Flying Nun) and ended up not part of Time Warner after Edgar Bronfman Jr's involvement.

David Geffen operated Asylum records in the hippydippy era of the late 60s and early 70s, obv this was before the punk and new wave indie vibe of the late 70s so dont think there was any thought of indie then. however he signed loads of boho singer-songwriters to his label. however Asylum Records was gobbled up by Warners and then merged it with Elektra Records. He also formed Geffen Records and then indie film studio Dreamworks SKG, however both the record operations to this ended up with Universal after Edgar Bronfman Jr's involvement

Edgar Bronfman Jr's family got loads of money (so he could take over record companys) from making lots of lovely whisky. which after that i think i need a pint of

btw good to see someone equates Garbage with alternative and not pop like McFly (however 'rubbish' pop fans may think McFly to be   )

Why is this in the pop forum?

Because if you havent noticed there is no 'rock forum' on buzzjack. there is an independently indie and alternative section plus and punk and metal section but no places for mainstream rock and seeing that the Garbage threads were in here this must be the place for all these stadium mainstreem rock acts
