Posted June 14, 200718 yr Has anyone else heard the new Happy Mondays album 'Uncle Dysfunctional' yet? It's easily the best thing Shaun has done since 'It's Great When You're Straight' and might be even better than that! The new line-up have totally come up trumps here - it's baggy, hip hop, pop even country in some places (check the pedal steel on 'Cuntry Disco') The lyrics are probably also at a career high for profanity and unintelligibility :D

June 14, 200718 yr Author Yes, I did notice that. No offence meant - amazing what the absence of an o can do eh? Anyway, anyone entering a Mondays thread should be prepared for anything :D Oh, and to re-iterate...get this album when it comes out on July 2nd - if you like The Twang then this is the album they should have made.
June 14, 200718 yr Yes, I did notice that. No offence meant - amazing what the absence of an o can do eh? and i hear hair metalers bon jovi are country rock now. damn put that o back in   btw have you seen the hair metal book. p*** funny!!! Anyway, anyone entering a Mondays thread should be prepared for anything :D Oh, and to re-iterate...get this album when it comes out on July 2nd - if you like The Twang then this is the album they should have made. bizarrely ive just mentioned the twang in a sigue sigue sputnik thread in retro area (about the hype rather than soundalike, but hey dude that could be a good thread idea, all the various bits of band the twang are supposed to sound like this week by the press, already had U2, Happy Mondays, Marillion?!?!?! Stone Roses. Then Jerico?????!?!?! etc etc )
June 14, 200718 yr The Twang sound like Then Jericho?!?!? HA HA! i dont know as thats the man who stormed off cheesefest Reborn In The Usa innit   however Music Week thought they sounded like that crossed with a random baggyband (maybe they didnt want to go a far as aligning them with either Marillion or U2???)
June 14, 200718 yr Author Here's my album review from Culturedeluxe for anyone curious... "Anyone who has caught the recent Happy Mondays tour will tell you that the decision to play a set mixed 50/50 between old and new material was a good one. The current line-up looks to be the best in years and their trademark sound has possibly never sounded this sharp, clearly helped along by producers Howie B and Sunny Levine. Kicking off with 'Angels & Whores', no punches are pulled as the album blueprint is rolled out - heavy funk, country banjo, massive dub bass, fuzzy guitars and unintelligible lyrics ('Who cuts the cheese? Lively Joe Joe!'etc.) all of which are themes we'll come back to visit as the LP plays. But first we've the peculiar electro-vibes of 'Anti Warhole on the Dancefloor', the most modern sounding track the Mondays have ever recorded and that's even when it sounds like a Commodore 64. Possibly the highlight of the album is 'Cuntry Disco', a bizarre mesh of electro-hop, pedal steel country and p-funk sensibilities book-ended by twin shouts of 'Cockadoodledoo'! If 'Deviants' were stripped of its funk and sheer wah-wah it could pass for a gangsta rap record, of course if gangsta records generally featured a man in his forties talking like a baby to very entertaining ends. 'Dr Dick' (another self-referencing character in Shaun's merry world of the Mondays) has a false start that reminds you of 'Midnight Cowboy' but soon makes way for such classic Ryderisms as 'Well I can do tricks, I can / I'm a dog with two dicks, I am' and if you can get past the slightly boring shuffling backbeat on 'In The Blood' you have a very strong rock song. 'Jellybean' harks back initially to the hints of country from earlier on before a bubblegum synth blows away any chance of a bluegrass hoedown and suddenly Black Grape are reborn in a brothel. On the other hand, 'Rats with Wings' features trip hop strings, wailing guitars and a general feeling of urban decay supported by a Shaun's throaty snarl and trademark perplexing yet appropriate lyrics. 'Weather', which closes the LP, truly sounds as though it's marched straight out of the sessions for a new Parliament album. Coming out just weeks after Mondays-inspired act The Twang's debut, it demonstrates the huge gulf still apparent between those inspirational and those simply inspired. A massive return to form." 9 stars out of 10 Edited June 14, 200718 yr by richie

June 14, 200718 yr Heard the new single on Round Table. It's excellent! It's a shame there's about 4 albums I want released on 2/7 when I go on holiday the day before. Could do with em for the plane!
July 13, 200718 yr Author A lot of the other press weren't as kind as me. Clearly they didn't bother to appreciate the production on the album and were concentrating too much on Shaun's vocals...which have never, ever been great. Sales rarely go hand in hand with critical acclaim anyway - I bet nobody gave Cascada's album any more than two stars (apart from maybe M8) and look how many that sold.
