Sigue Sigue Sputnik

 

Sigue Sigue Sputnik is a British pop-cyberpunk band that achieved moderate fame in the mid- to late 1980s, when the song "Love Missile F1-11" hit the pop charts around the world. "Love Missile F1-11"'s success was due in part to the song's use in the cult-hit movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Led by former Generation X bassist Tony James, the band adopted a style of new wave music similar to that of such bands as New York electronica duo Suicide and Swiss techno-rock duo Yello, by layering vocals, yelps, guitar riffs, electronic sound effects and short samples over pulsating synthesizer bass lines.

 

The themes and imagery in the band's songs were often influenced by futuristic, dystopian or post-apocalyptic films such as A Clockwork Orange, The Terminator, Blade Runner and the Mad Max trilogy. The band's music and image also mashed together a range of other pop culture influences, including the electronica/Krautrock influences of Kraftwerk, Marc Bolan's T-Rex, and the swagger and sex appeal of Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley and glam rock.

 

 

 

 

 

in the twang's review in the independent some was comparing the twang's hype to that f sigue sigue spunik and mentioned that they had adverts on their debut album. so was this like those download sites where you get free stuff if you listen to the sponsers message first and so the album was cheaper, or was it really just forerunner to all these multimillion gazillion dollar pop deals that we see now post spice girls???

well orginally i was looking thru carbon/silicon's back cat and non-clash bands and compared to that other band Big Audio Dynamite, the stuff that i pulled off from youtube of theres actually sounded better than bad:

 

 

 

 

Do we know why Sigue Sigue Sputnik ended? I seem to remember Peter Waterman saying they didn't want to continue or somehow became lost about what they where doing. Seemed rather confusing and I didn't understand what it was all about.

Their second LP was $h!te I believe. I think selling space between tracks was more of a joke than intent to make money was it not?

 

The Twang are just suffering from mass-media copying each other...one publication claimed they'd be the next big thing so another did and so on and so on.

I guess its quite obv, people have become intersted in carbon/silicon.

 

however dont know if he does both bands and puts on his pink hat/wig at weekends, or if he just does this and other people are the band

 

(then again it could be like East 17 and they are still around and have actually always been around if you call them up or like Bucks Fizz where on a good day you might get the original bucks fizz or on the other hand David van Day off Reborn cheesefest )
