Posted June 14, 200718 yr ended up watching the end of TMF's VH1 rewind chart last night and the year was 1991. however in the countdown most of the chart was greatest hits collections from Michael Bolton, Paul Young, erythmics etc etc. think the only thing not was REM. was there no decent new music this year???
June 14, 200718 yr Let me see... Nirvana? (Ok, technically they'd been going since about 1988 but that's when they totally broke through to the mainstream) Also plenty of indie bands started to hit the charts that year - Carter USM, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Flowered Up - people like that. Oh...and Right Said Fred of course :D :(
June 14, 200718 yr Author Let me see... Nirvana? (Ok, technically they'd been going since about 1988 but that's when they totally broke through to the mainstream) well i thought that they'd be on the topsellers chart but then i thought it might be a 1992 big seller??? Also plenty of indie bands started to hit the charts that year - Carter USM, Ned's Atomic Dustbin*, Flowered Up - people like that. maybe they were too indie to get anything but a cult sales then? and proving that names like Does It Offend You, Yeah and you say party we say die are not a new devlopment  the big sellers are as bad as blunt and nutella are now. so probs nothing changes in the world of pop  Oh...and Right Said Fred of course :D :( but obv it took years and years till RSF reached the Germanic pop heights that is Mojive!!! this is brilliant only in germany cheese to rank alongside Modern Talking - Ready For The Victory  ;lol: Xrmj7RCaK6s Modern Talking - Ready For The Victory BXKId4J1gCM *think ive seen this name on a new fest ad, playing with cud.
June 14, 200718 yr *think ive seen this name on a new fest ad, playing with cud. Sounds about right. Ned's Atomic Dustbin reformed a couple of years back and tend to play retrofest type shows...the sort that Cud would also play.
June 14, 200718 yr CHESNEY HAWKS!......lol... '91 was a pretty poor year tbh, i didnt even like homegrown acts.
June 14, 200718 yr Well these were all released in 1991 and some of them were debuts although some would not have sold so many. Admittedly most of the big sellers were by established acts. Leisure - Blur Electronic released their debut album Use Your Illusion I and II by GnR The White Room - KLF The La's Blue Lines - Massive Attack Metallica - Metallica Screamadelica - Primal Scream Out of Time - REM Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Chili Peppers Gish - Smashing Pumpkins Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden Temple of the Dog Achtung Baby - U2 Edited June 14, 200718 yr by grebo69
June 19, 200718 yr Massive Attack's Blue Lines was the main breakthrough. And EMF, too, who had so many better singles than Unbelievable.

June 19, 200718 yr Boy George hit the charts with his new project Jesus Loves You..... Generations Of Love Generations of Love is one of the singles of the 90s... absolute classic.
June 19, 200718 yr Blur - Actually first charted in 1990 with She's So High (#48) Jesus Jones - 3 top 50 singles in 1989 and Real Real Real made #19 in 1990 The Shamen - Make It Mine went Top 50 in 1990 The Black Crowes - Hard to Handle got to #45 in 1990 Ned's Atomic Dustbin - KillYour Television (#53) and Until You Find Out (#51) - both in 1990 I know, I know I'm being pedantic. My other half slates me for it! I'm a pedant too - you just beat me to it. Also, Blur were called Seymour in the very late 80s. The Shamen were originally a four piece rock outfit in the 80s and Neds had The Ingredients EP out in 1989! :w00t:
June 20, 200718 yr The Shamen were originally a four piece rock outfit in the 80s and Neds had The Ingredients EP out in 1989! :w00t: I absolutely loved the album In Gorbachev We Trust. Was that out in 87?

The Shamen were originally a four piece rock outfit in the 80s and Neds had The Ingredients EP out in 1989! :w00t: C&C Music Factory this is probs not a new band either as i think its kinda the same producer(s) who are behind MVP. and so probs been churning out loads of dance hits under loads of names like forever. uYHDd9FIaqc this is good btw imo
June 21, 200718 yr Some further comments due to work boredom. I think 1991 is my favourite year for music ever. Massive Attack - Were originally part of the 80s Wild Bunch. Manic Street Preachers - first release was Suicide Alley (1989?) and had Motown Junk and You Love Us out in 1990. Electronic - had a 1989 hit with Getting Away With It Oleta Adams - sung backing vocals with Tears for Fears Beverley Craven - was ancient...but yes, not successful till then. Jellyfish - big in America I think. Extreme - ha ha, remember them? 'Get The Funk Out!' Kenny Thomas - Ah yes, the former boxer. I'm quite embarrassed that I bought 'Outstanding'. Nirvana - Began in 1988 with the release of 'Love Buzz' Definition Of Sound - They were great, remember 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven'? C&C Music Factory - Charted at the very end of 1990 ;) but didn't reach the top till 1991. The Mock Turtles - were also rans for a few years until their old b-side 'Can You Dig It?' gave them their only top 40 hit (twice!) Little Angels - the arse end of poodle rock Flowered Up - LEGENDS! Although 'It's On' was a 1990 release originally as was 'Phobia'. The Divinyls - One hit blunders Harry Connick Jr - First single hit but he was well known and was in the 1989 film Memphis Belle. Carter USM - First single in 1988 and had a top 75 hit in 1990 with 'Anytime Anyplace Anywhere' Chesney Hawkes - Had no career before or after 1991! :D PM Dawn - Again, 1991 only - whatever happened to them? Color Me Badd - 1991 only again on account of being the most stupid looking band ever. Amy Grant - Ugh... The Black Crowes - the arse end of poodle rock Rozalla - released the same song three times then skedaddled. Dannii Minogue - the arse end of the Minogue family Saint Etienne - They had 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'. 'Nothing Can Stop Us' and 'Kiss and Make Up' out in 1990. Moby - His only good single came out in 1991. Curve - They were around before 1991 I think, but this was the year they ruled the chart show indie chart! Milltown Brothers - Which way should I jump? How about straight down the dumper! Also, remember the masses of rave and dance acts who only ever had one or two hits like T99, Quadrophonia, LaTour, K-Klass - they all made their debuts in 1991 (I think!)
