Going punk was no gimmick. Useful with a shotgun and no stranger to the odd overdose, Pink has cut loose and embraced her inner freak.

Last night pink stayed up shooting guns and drinking tequila. This afternoon there’s a shredded paper target of Saddam Hussein’s face on the back seat of her black Range Rover and a persistent dull ache in her head.
It’s the week before Christmas when we meet for a late lunch at a Mexican restaurant in the Los Angeles suburb near her house, a property she brought from drummer Alex Van Halen. Pink has arrived before the arranged time of 3pm and sits at the bar sipping water. Accompanied only by her manager, ex-Bros bassist Craig Logan, she is recounting the events of the previous evening. The boozing and gunplay gave way to horsing around in the studio with her friend and musical collaborator Linda Perry until five in the morning. However, the festive song they recorded seems unlikely to ever see an official release.
“Siiiiilent night,” Pink sings. “Holy $h!t, all is f***ed...”
We go outside so pink can have a cigarette before sitting down at a quiet corner table to examine the menu. She is asthmatic and has smoked since she was nine, but there is certainly no concern that hacking through 20 a day might set a bad example to her younger fans. It quickly becomes clear that a few things concern pink when it comes to any perception of her as a role model. For example, she doesn't use some affected expression of surprise like “Golly”. Pink prefers “f***”. If this doesn't seem like standard operating procedure for the modern pop diva, then that's because Pink is different. All she has in common with the likes of Britney and Christina is that she is in her early 20s, female, and has sold millions of records. There was no Mickey Mouse Club for her. As a teenager, Pink got more into Guns N' Roses, sang in a couple of shabby punk bands and liked getting really high on acid. She says she would like to be a pin-up, but considers herself too much of a tomboy. Her appeal, she thinks, lies in honesty rather than presentation. It’s the simplest of messages - be yourself. Or, as the sleevenotes for her latest album, Try This, would have it, “Embrace the freak that you are.”

What do people expect when they meet you?

They expect me to be a monster. People have told me they were scared to meet me, like “I thought you were going to rip my head off.”

 

You certainly have an image.

I guess. Do I? Like hard-partying? Angry?

 

But you're quite girl-next-door, really.

Do you think? [laughs] Really? I've never, ever, ever in my life been told that until today. Where the f*** do you live?

 

I'm just saying you seem alright.

Like how? Nice? I'm very nice. I can be a monster in a situation where I have to defend myself, but most of the time I'm just a puppy dog [laughs]. No one wants to hear about that though.

So what do people want to hear about? At the moment Pink's love life is one hot topic. She is newly single and intends to stay that way for a while, have a little fun. Her two-year relationship with motocross rider Carey Hart ended recently, she says because they were either going to get married or split up.

“Nothing went wrong. I want him to be the father of my children one day, but I'm not ready for one day yet. I want to go on dates, be a young girl.”

Until recently, Pink's romantic situation was far too stable to be of any interest to the tabloids.

“I never experienced that until the last two or three months because I've had boyfriends since I was 15. Now its Tommy, Kristanna, Christina... all the drama.”

No! [laughs] Bad rep, bad rap. He’s awesome. We met at a party and we just clicked as friends. He's fun to hang out with. He’s doesn’t give a $h!t, which is rare.

And kristanna Loken?

Whatever you saw, it all happened.

I saw a picture of you getting off with her. Was she a friend of yours?

She was that night. We were just dancing and she kissed me. She tried to dominate me.

 

And how did that work out for you?

I will not be dominated.

 

People seem keen to see you as a lesbian icon, or even a lesbian. Why do you think that is?

I don’t know. I guess cos I’m tough [laughs]. A lot of my friends are gay, most of my girlfriends are. I don’t mind it at all. When I started it was, “Is she white, is she black, is she mixed, is she Hispanic?”

 

So which is it?

I’m irish-german-lithuanian-jew

 

That would have been my first guess…

Right! [laughs] Now its, “Is she gay, is she straight, is she bi… is she tri? What is she?”

 

Do you ever think it would be easier to have a relationship with a woman?

f***, no! Women like to talk about everything, way too much $h!t. If I was with a woman I’d be the guy of the relationship. Like, “Come on, shut up!”

 

And what’s the problem between you and Christina Aguilera?

Its kind of bull$h!t but I don’t say anything because I’m not the only one she’s attacking. She pretty much hates everyone so I can’t take it personally.

 

So what do you think of her?

I’ve told her how I feel. I don’t need to tell the world.

The Aguilera question is one that Pink has become bored with answering lately. Another is why she is called Pink, though she tells the story again. When she was eight years old, a boy pulled down her trousers and she blushed bright pink because she wasn’t wearing any knickers. Years later, while watching Reservoir Dogs, the appearance of Mr Pink reminded her friends of the incident and they started calling her Pink, too. Lastly, her friend Matt was desperate to see “a white girl’s thing”. After a year of pestering, she relented. “It’s pink!” Matt noted.

“Pink has been following me throughout different situations in my life and that’s why it’s stuck,” she says. “I don’t like people who I haven’t met to call me Alecia. I was in New Zealand once and this guy walked up to me and said “Alecia Beth Moore!” Eewwww. That’s gross, I felt totally creeped out.”

But that’s your name.

“I know, but I’ve been Pink since I was 15.”

As Alecia became Pink, her mother kicked her out of the house: “She couldn’t control me and I didn’t want to be controlled. We had a really horrendous relationship.”

Pink was born on 8th September 1979 to Jim Moore, a Vietnam veteran who ran an insurance company, and his wife Judith, an ER nurse. Her parents fought bitterly and frequently, divorcing when she was seven. Though the childhood chronicled on her 2001 album, Missundaztood, seems unremittingly miserable, she has some happy memories growing up around Philadelphia. “Camping. Running through the woods with my brother. There was this pit, a huge 30ft dirt ramp. We’d slide down it and kill ourselves. It was so much fun.”

When did you start becoming a f***-up?

“When I was nine. I started early but I’m glad because now I’m mellow.”

After her parents separated Pink moved in with her mother. Increasingly unruly, at 14 Pink was taken to a therapist.

“I started telling the woman all kinds of crazy $h!t so she’d take me out of my home [laughs]. Like, what did you do today? Oh, I pictured breaking a bottle in half and slicing my teacher’s throat with it. My mom never took me back.”

Next year Pink was living with whichever friend would take her when she wasn’t going out and getting wired. Friends overdosed, others died in drink-driving accidents. One night Pink had a gun pulled on her.

“I didn’t have anything for them, and I was f***ed up so I never really took it seriously. I told the guy he had really bad breath and he started to laugh. He said, you’re f***ing crazy. Yeah, pretty much.”

So when did you pull it back together?

“When I was 16… but I never really pulled it back together.”

 

Spotted by an MCA talent scout while performing at Philadelphia's Club Fever, Pink joined a short-lived girl group called Basic Instinct before becoming part of R&B trio Choice. After two years the group disbanded but Pink was offered a deal as a solo artist by LaFace founder Antonio “LA” Reid. Under Reid's guidance she recorded and published R&B album Can't Take Me Home in 2000. It sold two million copies but Pink felt it wasn't really representative of who she was.

“I like it and I hate it. That period was so f***ed,” she remembers.

Pink decided she wanted to make her second record on her own terms. A huge fan of 4 Non Blondes, she enlisted their singer, Linda Perry, to write and produce much of the material. Perry's cathartic approach to work was perfect for what Pink wanted to accomplish. “She's very aggressive, she'll pull things out of you.”

The music was harder - Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler both made appearances - and the material darker, dealing with Pink's troubled upbringing and low self-esteem. Pink liked it, but her label was extremely concerned. They tried to say no to her. She turned a deaf ear and Missundaztood went on to sell 12 million copies, propelled but the unrepresentatively upbeat single Get The Party Started. No one could say no to her now. Well almost no one.

Linda Perry was involved in Pink's third album, though not as closely as before. Instead Tim Armstrong, of Californian punker Rancid, co-wrote and produced the bulk of the tracks, some of which were recorded while he was on tour with his other band, the Transplants.

“It was one of the raddest times, I felt honoured,” she says.

Did they clean up their act a bit while you were there? “f***, no, but Tim's very much a gentleman. They're clean and sober so its, like, have fun, hang out, then work.”

The long green coat that Pink wears today is covered in hairs from her dogs, Nanny and Bailey. Away from performing, she is happiest when cooking for her beloved pets.

“Barbecue stuff, scrambled eggs, popcorn. They like fruit too. They’re very healthy.”

She’s had two dogs before. One, Corky, died recently so Pink got a tattoo on her left forearm in his honour. She has, she recons, about 20 tattoos, including the barcode for Missundaztood across the back of her neck and her favourite, “What goes around comes around”, inscribed around her right wrist. The other dog, f***er, went to live with her father because she was away on tour all the time. He renamed him Fredo.

Was it embarrassing when you had to call f***er?

“f***, no – for everyone else probably. I used to do it purposely when I lived on Venice Beach, I’d let him go about 400 yards and the shout, f***er!, and then this cute little Jack Russell would come running. I don’t like people that much – that’s why I have dogs. I have a warped sense of how things really are because I’ve been out of real life for so long.

 

Well, you don’t have a real life, do you?

No, not at all. I don’t know how people think. I could be surrounded by a thousand people and still feel lonely. It’s the human condition. I’m not saying its always a bad thing, it gives me something to write about. I’m happy being miserable. f*** it!

 

When did you last drink until you were sick?

It’s been a while. I’m not a vomiter. I just spin out and have to go to bed. In fact, in my dream last night the room was spinning. Maybe its because I went to bed drunk.

 

Is the line “I’m coming up” in Get The Party Started about ecstasy?

I didn’t write it so I don’t know. Linda wrote it. I don’t think so. I never thought of it that way.

 

Have you ever heard that phase before?

No. What does it mean?

 

When you feel it start to take effect.

We always called it “rolling”, because your eyes roll back into your head I don’t miss that.

 

You don’t do any drugs?

I’ve been clean since ’95. Weed I don’t count, but I don’t smoke that hardly any more. I started getting really paranoid, thinking I was having heart palpitations. Crack and heroin for me were always the two things… don’t go there. I saw my friends go there and they never came back.

 

Have you ever thought you were going to die?

Yes. It was Thanksgiving in ’95, I OD’d and I was lying on the floor of this club.

 

OD’ing from what?

Honestly? Crystal, ketamine, angel dust, ecstasy, coke and nitrous… and I smoked a lot of weed and drank a 40 (a supersize bottle of booze). I mixed everything.

 

How were you when you came to?

My lips were blue, from what I was told, but my friends were f***ed-up too, so I could have been fine for all I know. Its funny to me. People are documenting what I’m doing now and they thing I’m some rabid, crazy, lunatic… whatever, and I’m so tame compared to how I used to be.

 

 

 

A waiter arrives and takes Pink’s order of coconut shrimp and grilled artichoke washed down with Jack Daniel’s and lemonade. Afterwards she settles the bill in cash and we leave to drive the few miles to a studio, where 30 dancers will try out for the three places on her forthcoming tour.

What kind of dancers are we looking at today? “Hot chicks, but they’ve got to be willing to shave their heads.”

For what?

“For me! Girls have to be willing to do anything if they’re coming on tour with me.”

So they don’t actually have to do it?

“No, but they have to be willing to.”

Sitting at a trestle table in front of the dance floor, Pink prises open a couple of beer bottles with the end of a lighter. As groups of four girls perform the same routine to the chorus of Pink’s single God Is A DJ, she sips her drink, applauding and smiling as each quartet finishes.

“f*** that girl might as well be topless,” she whispers, pointing out a blonde wearing a bright green mesh vest that leaves little to the imagination.

Discussing the candidates with her choreographer, Pink can’t decide who she likes. Rather, she can’t decide who she doesn’t like.

“That’s why I can’t watch sports,” she says over a smoke in the car park. “One team wins, but I hate it when someone loses.”

The next day Pink is behind the wheel again. Her work responsibilities for the year are now officially finished and she is going for dinner with friends. Even at 8pm, progress is slow along Sunset Boulevard. Pink turns on the TV mounted in the dashboard and watches Seinfeld while cracking her knuckles, smoking, talking on her mobile to Tommy Lee and waving at the people in the next car who are shouting, “Pink! How’s it going, girl?”

The suggestion that she might want to keep her eyes on the road rather than enjoying the antics of Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer is met with a friendly but firm reply.

“Don’t lecture me,” she warns, “I’m a grown woman.”

 

What has success brought you?

Something to do [laughs]. I guess satisfaction that I can respect what I do and myself… and I meet cool people and get really touching letters.

 

Who from?

Mostly a lot of tortured young girls who need somebody to talk to. Its heartbreaking $h!t, like, “My mom just died and my grandfather was raping my mom. Now he’s raping me but I don’t want to kill myself because of your album, or because you made it so I can too.”

 

Who would you call if you had a serious problem?

I have five or six great friends. I can speak to my mom now if I get into $h!t, but I’d probably call my dad. I was talking to him, like, “Dad, you’re 58, I’m 24. Do you ever figure all this $h!t out? How do you know that you’re content?” he said, “Honey, you don’t. Life is a journey, not a destination.” I’m like, “f***! I do all this stuff and I don’t really feel good about any of it.”

 

What do you mean?

All the $h!t I’ve done. I do feel good about some things, but when things happen to you, you’re just like, “That was anticlimactic.” I always feel like I’m having an out-of-body experience, just sitting back watching.

 

You said you want to start dating.

I want to keep it light for a while. I like the butterflies when it’s all new and you’re learning about somebody.

 

Would you go all the way on the first date?

No. I did that a couple of times and it was really disappointing. You need to know somebody, you need to know what they like and they need to know what you like. Sex is only fun if you can be f***ing open, so you either have to know the person or be wasted.

 

Where would you want to go out?

Go shoot some guns, see a movie, go to dinner, go dancing. Maybe stay at home and watch a movie… but that’s later. That’s not a good first date, but I kind of jump right into things.

 

Are you a good shot?

You saw Saddam! I ripped his f***ing eye out.

 

What one thing would you change about yourself?

Laugh less. I listen to radio interviews. All I do is giggle and its really f***ing annoying.

 

What about physical?

My feet. They’re not big, but they’re strong. Its because of gymnastics I’ve got duck feet.

 

What, webbed?

No [laughs]. Not webbed! f***! I’ve got Barney Rubbles. I could push a car with my feet.

After some inexpert parallel parking, Pink walks up the steps to her assistant Laura Wilson's house. Upon arrival she jumps on Wilson, who offers her a cold bottle of Corona and a shot of tequila. Her manager and various friends sit around chatting, and there is certainly no feeling that the boss has arrived.

Pink's phone rings. She has arranged to go out for drinks with Tommy Lee later, but he has got confused.

“Why is he at my f***ing house? I told him to meet me here. f***ing dumbass!”

Lee eventually arrives an hour later, eyeing the bottle of tequila on the kitchen table - “Shots! Excellent!” - and knocking a wooden ornament off the wall as he enters the room. He hugs Pink, who is ready to leave and start enjoying her time off in earnest.

“Hey,” she says after a goodbye kiss on the cheek. “I'm going on tour, I'm really f***ing hot and you're going to write about how great I look tonight.”

You know, that might not happen.

“Really?” Pink pauses before laughing one last time. “Well, f*** you.”
