Posted April 25, 200619 yr I was wondering what with Tesco taking over the retail marketplace i was wondering what was supermarkets like 15, 20, 30 years ago? Was Tesco always everywhere like it is now? or was another retailer as big as tesco is now 20, 30 years ago?
April 25, 200619 yr There weren't as many supermarkets around...and they were smaller...and there were more brands. I remember Fine Fare, Gateway, William Low, Presto and all the others...not sure which ones were Scottish and which were further reaching.
April 25, 200619 yr Well Sainsburys was always the top supermarket untill ten yrs ago, when Tesco took over, i believe Sainsburys is now number 3 behind asda. Yeh there used to be alot more grocery stores around in the past & much more local fruit n veg stores. Supermarkets sell EVERYTHING now, so their a threat to all other retailers i guess
April 25, 200619 yr tesco were the first ones i heard of in the mid 60's.... no they werent everywhere. 40 years ago villages had greengrocers, butchers, chemists, habidashers etc all as seperate shops, i remember life before supermarkets.
April 28, 200619 yr I have a sort of 'love/hate' relationship with supermarkets - I hate the way they dominate the market and force small retailers out of business, but on the other hand, love all these special offers...... -_- I've got a Sainsbury 5 minutes walk from where I live, so that more-or-less is my local shop in a way....
April 28, 200619 yr In Blackers it used to be either the 'Late shop' or 'Night and Day', 'Night and Day' was everywhere but now Tesco has taken them all over.
