Just missing out on the Play-offs

Positions 12 - 09 are:

12th Chumbawamba - Tubthumping 139

11th Radiohead - Paranoid Android 139

10th Sheryl Crow - Everyday Is A Winding Road 140

9th Meredith Brooks - Bitch 164

The final 8 Records are:

All Saints - Never Ever

Blur - Song 2

Cardigans - Lovefool

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

No Doubt - Don't Speak

Texas - Say What You Want

Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

Verve - The Drugs Don't Work

But which 3 Records made the Top3?

Making the play offs are:

8th Verve - The Drugs Don't Work 166 Pts (12 votes including 1 1st, 2 2nd & 4 3rd places)

7th Cardigans - Lovefool 174 Pts (19 votes including 2 2nd places)

6th Texas - Say What You Want 183 Pts (19 votes including 1 1st place)

5th All Saints - Never Ever 206 Pts (16 votes including 1 2nd place)

4th Blur - Song 2 206 Pts (16 votes including 1 1st, 2 2nd & 2 3rd places)

But from early on in the scoring on the Top three Records of 1997 was never much in doubt!

In 3rd place finishing a massive 77 Points ahead of the 4th placed song is:

3rd Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony 283 Points (21 votes - 3 1st, 2 2nd & 2 3rd places)

This song only made #2 behind Puff Daddy's I'll Be Missing You and was based on an 1960s orchestral string sample of a version of the Rolling Stones 1965 #1 The Last Time. Sadly for Richard Ashcroft he lost the songwriting royalties to Mick Jagger & Keith Richards.

So which Record has won: Torn or Don't Speak?

I should add if there is a Tie in points I decide the position by the most number of 1st places, the most number of 2nd places etc. (The same rules as the Eurovision Song Contest!)

Because:

2nd Natalie Imbruglia - Torn 339 Points (25 votes including 4 1st, 3 2nd & 3 3rd places).

This debut single from the ex-Neighbours star went to #2 in the UK charts behind Aqua's Barbie Girl! It's also one of four tracks in 1996/1998 to Top the Billboard Airplay charts (along with the Goo Goo Dolls' Iris & No Doubt's Dont Speak & the 1996 Record Of The Year Fugees' Killing Me Softly) but not count to the US Billboard Top100 as it was not released on a physical format - until the rules changed in 1998.

1st No Doubt - Don't Speak 339 Points (25 votes - 4 1st, 4 2nd & 4 3rd places).

This UK #1 was there UK breakthrough track which introduced Europe to their lead singer & future Mrs Gavin Rossdale, Gwen Stefani. Taken from their US chart-topping album Tragic Kingdom.

I'm glad this contest was not lost when CC went offline. Can't really argue with the winner - a great song.

And I'm happy that some unusual songs like 'Your Woman' and 'Paranoid Android' did so well.

PS looking forward to ranking the 1998 hits. This contest is a great idea - the shortlists you're doing are very representative of the years.

I love these competitions!

Love the top 2 - very close but I expected No Doubt to come out on top

I thought Wyclef was released in 1998 in the UK?

16/05/1998 Wyclef Jean Gone Till November 3 {3}-4-5-13-19-28-36-50-70->9

i totally agree with the result... on the list it was my fav track of the year, i only like embrace 'all you good good people' better..
