think Andrew Collins might be right with his comment of fireworks bands in the word this month, about how there's so many indie bands getting success now that there "is a glut of credible bands who enjoy disproportionate success with their debut albums (he mentoned this may include Hard-Fi and the Kooks) but may struggle to keep the blue tourchpaper lit later in their career as indie fans turn out to be as fickle as pop fans and wander off to something new" leaving older acts to have these two week wonders of a record that charts at 16 than goes to 44 the next week and no doubt a slot at Guillfest in 10 years time.

However which bands past and present could be seen as fireworks bands

The Magic Numbers

Elastica (but that had a lot to do with them taking years to follow up)

Hard-Fi and Editors both grew on word of mouth to reach the top of the charts (plus they made it there in the January sales when cash-strapped students had a bit of cash and the prices were cheap) so hard to say with them.

Indie is pop now - it's not so much the fickle indie fans who aren't sticking, more the younger pop fans and the middle-aged desperados who bought these albums in a bid to impress on their colleagues the fact that they're 'with it' and own the number one album.

Actually i would say American R&B is the most pop now, as thats the most production line churn them out of successes, however some that might be classed as indie is very close to AC and/or the guillfest/travelling wilburys  .

Ah...not the most pop certainly, but chart indie is 'pop' now - Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Killers, Snow Patrol et al.

well they are very popular but i think that these have at least some bit of integrity to be categorized slightly above the Wensledale production line of pop. thats why i alligned them with stadium rock (could be said that they're all kinda live 8/live aid types) or dadrock rather than some quirky leftfield spunky indie*

*and obv that other kinda indiepop and tweepop is less mainstream than that
