Wonderful Tonight is about as representative of Eric Clapton in his prime as Mull Of Kintyre is representative of Paul McCartney in the 1970s.

I can't stand Clapton after Layla. Seriously, Rock Against Racism was started because of his comments. Everytime he has a flop album be 'goes back to his roots' and does a dodgy blues album. He's the guy who 'stole' the blues from poor black guys and gave them to rich, white, middleclass meatheads. BB King and JJ Cale should hang their heads in shame for working with such a jerk. Everytime the radio plays Tears In Heaven they're spitting on the grave of Robert Johnson.

however that could be also said for pop music* in general, for dance music in general and for heavy metal**

*the stuff that traces its linage to disco/HiNRG type and rock'n'roll

**a lot of the early riffing it has been said has devloped from heavy blues riffing (this being waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before metal now before funny hairmetal types)

Here I was thinking the soundclash was about voting for the record you liked and not an analysis of how authentic you find the artist in question.

'behind the mask' was excellant! and that was in '87 ..
Yes, it was.

So over the year in my opinion Eric Clapton had some fantastic records.

does that metter though? especially if it generates discussion..

Yes that was a good track, infact that entire album it was from 'August' was great.

Produced by Phil Collins.

Why not choose one of Clapton's Cream tracks....? I reckon something like "Sunshine of Your Love" or "The White Room" would be a far, far better opponent for "Paint It Black".... And, let's face it, post-Cream, Clapton seriously begins to suck..... And then there's all the racist sh!te.... Yeah Eric, you "borrow" the Black Man's music and then witter on about Enoch fukkin' Powell... You Grade-A TIT...... <_< <_<
