Elvis Statue To Be Unveiled July 26, 2007

A life-sized bronze statue of Elvis Presley, appearing in his famous beaded and studded costume he wore in a historic 1973 concert from Hawai'i, will be installed at the Neal Blaisdell Center at 10 a.m. July 26. The public may attend.

"With a great deal of affection, we're very excited to pay tribute to Elvis and that great event that was seen by 1.5 billion around the world," said Rob Pellizzi, senior vice president of marketing for TV Land, a cable channel devoted to classic and iconic TV programming.

The widely-viewed program, "Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii," was the first musical event beamed around the globe by satellite, reaching viewers in 40 countries, with an audience share of 51 in the U.S. The soundtrack album rocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard charts and earned a five-time platinum award for sales of more than 5 million. Since then, a DVD version also has become a keepsake.

"The connection with Elvis always has been remarkable worldwide," said Pellizzi. "In the Philippines, 92 percent of viewers watched; 70 percent in Hong Kong."

The statue installation and unveiling are keyed to the 30th anniversary of Presley's death on Aug. 16, 1977, at age 42. The Honolulu concert - a TV "milestone" - is the reason Hawaii was selected to remember the rock music icon. Mayor Mufi Hannemann and entrepreneur Tom Moffatt are among Honolulu dignitaries who will participate in the statue unveiling. Larry W. Jones, TV Land president, also will be on hand.

Michiel Van Der Sommen, the artist who also created the 13 year old Elvis statue, just announced that he is creating a new sculpture: Elvis at 3. The model is taken from the famous family portrait with Elvis posing as a toddler between his parents. This sculpture is just a pre-design. When and where the final sculpture is going to be released is not known at this moment.

Found these articles about the Aloha statue on the Honolulu Advertiser website B) It's being unveiled tomorrow

The Blaisdell Center was called the Honolulu International Center when Presley performed there. The statue will face toward the street, with Presley's back to the arena, said Rob Pellizzi, senior vice president of marketing for TV Land, a cable channel devoted to classic and iconic TV programming.

The statue — weighing between 1,000 and 1,200 pounds —will be 6-foot-2, Presley's height, and will stand on a base measuring 30 by 30 inches. His connection with Hawai'i will be detailed in an accompanying plaque

Elvis statue will be lei-less in Hawaii

When a life-sized statue of Elvis Presley is unveiled in front of the Blaisdell Arena tomorrow, you'll see the iconic pop star in stage regalia, wearing his beaded and studded show jumpsuit and in a singing pose. But he won't be decked out in lei, which traditionally has been part of his "look" in the Islands.

"When you make sculpture, there are, alas, some technical limitations," said Ivan Schwartz, founder and director of Brooklyn-based StudioEIS, which was commissioned by cable channel TV Land to create the memorial.

The statue pays tribute to Presley's "Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii" 1973 satellite concert from the site, and also coincides with the 30th anniversary of Presley's death on Aug. 16, 1977.

The texture of a lei does not translate well into bronze, said Schwartz.

"It would have had a disastrous effect in the process of constructing something in bronze, in a process where everything is done three times," said Schwartz, whose company has created scores of historical figures but never an Elvis until now.

A clay model is made, then molded and cast in wax, then set in bronze.

"The metal has to be thick enough to make it all work," he said.

Die-hard fans of The King, who may want to place a lei over Elvis' head, will have a hard time getting up that high: The statue, weighing 1,100 pounds, will rest on a pedestal 30 to 36 inches tall, and will stand nine feet tall, said Schwartz.

"I think it's a very close representation of the real man," said Schwartz. "It fits what we call popular memory — how people remember somebody."
