Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Rihanna stays atop the Australian Charts for a fourth week with "Umbrella",

now marking the halfway mark of her other No.1, the eight week running "SOS".

And whilst the Top 4 stays stable, two songs jump into the Top 10 at 5 and 6. At

No.5 is "Destination Calabria" by Alex Gaudino feat Crystal Waters, which was

last weeks biggest climber, and it again attains that crown by jumping up 7

places. It also gives Crystal her first Top 10 single in just under 13 years (12

years, 11 months and 3 weeks to be exact), as her last Top 10 "100% Pure Love"

jumped from No.15 to No.3 the week of July 17th, 1994, and this is now her

second Top 10 entry. Also achieving their second Top 10 is Fall Out Boy, who's

"Thnks fr th Mmrs" jumps from No.11 to No.6 this week, although it's only been 8

weeks since "This Ain't a Scene, it's an Arms Race" (No.31 this week) fell out

of the Top 10.

The highest new entry this week is "Like This" by one of the former

Destiny's Child singer's Kelly Rowland, coming in at No.13. This is her third

solo and fourth chart entry, having previously charted with "Dilemna" (No.1 for

4 weeks, October 2002), a duet with Nelly, then her two solo hits, "Stole"

(No.2, Jan. 2003) and "Can't Nobody" (No.13, May 2003). This track is the first

single to be lifted from her forthcoming second solo album "Ms. Kelly" which is

released in July.

Of the three new entries to the Top 50 this week, two of them are by New

Zealanders. At No.29 is the fourth single from the former Top 10 album by

Evermore called "Real Life", this one is called "Never Let You Go". The three

previous singles were "Running" (No.5, June 2006), "Light Surrounding You" (No.1

for 1 week, Jan 2007) and "Unbreakable" (No.53, March 2007). It becomes their

fifth Top 50 single overall.

In September 1997 Crowded House made the charts with their last single "Not

the Girl You Think You Are", which reached No.37, and was the second single

released from the No.1 album "Recurring Dream: The Best of", the other being the

No.10 single "Everything is Good for You". Well almost 10 years later the group

is back on the charts with a new single at No.34, "Don't Stop Now", which is the

lead single from their forthcoming album "Time on Earth". The album is dedicated

to their former drummer Paul Hester, and Neil Finn and Nick Seymour are now

joined by Mark Hart and new drummer Matt Sherrod, whilst this track features

guitar work by guitar legend Johnny Marr (ex-Smiths).

"The Traveling Wilburys Collection" matches the original two weeks that

"Volume One" by the Wilbury's achieved in February 1989, and also manages to

pick a Platinum Sales status, whereas it had only achieved Gold last week,

meaning it's sold just as much this week as last.

The highest new entry on the album charts comes in at No.3, "Icky Thump" by

The White Stripes. It matches the peak of their previous album "Get Behind Me

Satan" which debuted at No.3 two years and two weeks ago (June 13, 2005), whilst

their 2003 "Elephant" album debuted and peaked at No.4 (7 April, 2003), and now

"Icky Thump" becomes their third consecutive Top 10 and Top 5 album. There only

other Top 50 chart entry was the 2002 album "White Blood Cells", but something

else I noticed with 'Stripes albums is that they debut high, then fall fast the

following week. "Elephant" went from 4 to 12 to 14 then hovered around the

position for a while, whilst "...Satan" went from 3 to 10 to 13 and hovered

again, so I guess we'll see next week how "...'Thump" does on the fall, as lead

single "Icky Thump" is sitting at No.48 after debuting at No.46 last week.

Debuting at No.11 is the debut album for Australian singer/songwriter Kate

Miller-Heidke, "Little Eve", which features this week's No.46 single "Words". As

I have mentioned before, her style is similar to Tori Amos and Kate Bush, but

when I was listening to the album there are elements of Rickie Lee Jones, Joni

Mitchell and other female's of that style present in her work.

This is a list of the No.1 albums in Australia for the past 42 years.
