June 26, 200718 yr Curve, I dont even need to think about it... They kinda started the whole Indie Rock with a bit of Techno/Industrial beat shebang off about six years before Garbage, Butch Vig kinda ripped them off a bit it has to be said, and he certainly cant pretend to have never heard Curve..... Their material is a lot darker and deeper than Garbage's..... And, actually, I think Shirley Manson's other band, Angelfish, were a bit better than Garbage too..... I do enjoy Garbage, but I still think they're a kinda watered-down, poppy version of Curve.... But, they still beat the c**p outta Republica though.....

I thought you'll said that! :P I don't care who was the first or who ripped or not, all I know is who DID IT BETTER! Simply! And the answer is obvious: Garbage! Count their amazing singles, their live shows, the production, the VOICE of lead singers They have a lot of darker songs too (especially on their debut album). Poppier or not, Garbage found a perfect ballance between mainstream and indie zone. I propose to do a test for someone that never heard about both bands. Put a song from both bands one after other and ask that person to mention what song he/she likes from this first listen. At least 80% will choose Garbage! ;) They kinda started the whole Indie Rock with a bit of Techno/Industrial beat shebang off about six years before Garbage Come on! They were influenced by My Bloody Valentine to be honest... Any new band is influenced by the past bands. Of course they were very good on their own but they didn't discover the wheel... PS to call Republica c**p it's a big mistake IMO! :D Edited June 27, 200718 yr by Alin
June 26, 200718 yr Come on! They were influenced by My Bloody Valentine to be honest... Any new band is influenced by the past bands. Of course they were very good on their own but they didn't discovered the wheel... PS to call Republica c**p it's a big mistake IMO! :D MBV weren't exactly using heavy Techno/Dance beats on their songs though and MBV's really early stuff (before they went to Creation..) is sub-JAMC.. Curve might've borrowed some of the guitar stylings of MBV sure, but the marriage of Indie/Shoe-gaze guitars and the heavy Techno beats and rhythms is definitely down to Toni, Dean and Co... The first Curve EP came out in 1990, a full year before the glorious "Loveless".... Republica were pretty c**p, it has to be said, sorry mate... I just found their stuff bland, uninspiring and totally derivitive, about the only thing they had going for them was Saffron.... They had two good singles, but the rest was just instantly forgettable....
June 26, 200718 yr I thought you'll said that! :P I don't care who was the first or who ripped or not, all I know is who DID IT BETTER! Simply! And the answer is obvious: Garbage! Put a song from both bands one after other and ask that person to mention what song he/she likes from this first listen. At least 80% will choose Garbage! ;) Obviously 80% will choose Garbage, because I seriously doubt you could find anyone who hasn't heard at least one Garbage song, even by accident on the radio.... There's absolutely nowt wrong with Toni Halliday's vocals, I deffo feel she's the equal to Shirley Manson having seen both bands live... As for production, Butch Vig does not trump Alan Moulder. Not by a longshot mate.... Vig gets all the hype cos he was the guy that produced "Nevermind", but I reckon he's a bit over-rated as a producer to be honest, I've been less than impressed with some of the production jobs he's done for other bands and frankly I dont think he even did that a good job of producing Nirvana, he robbed a Nirvana of a lot of their rawness and ferocity with his rather over-produced, poppy approach to "Nevermind", it was Steve Albini's production of "In Utero" that better represents what Nirvana were as a band IMO.... Moulder is consistently excellent, specially when you hear the amazing production work Moulder does for the likes of NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle and others....
June 26, 200718 yr Neither. Elastica would probably get my vote. Man, Elastica were ludicrously over-hyped sh!t (and yes, I WAS suckered into buying their debut album).... I thought someone of your obvious taste and intelligence would be able to see through this NME fad band and would've dismissed them long ago, as I have....
June 26, 200718 yr Garbage without ANY doubt! Bleed Like Me is one of the finest albums in my collection, and one of the few rocky (ish) ones too :P Shirley is a bloody legend too.
June 26, 200718 yr Author Man, Elastica were ludicrously over-hyped sh!t (and yes, I WAS suckered into buying their debut album).... They must have been bad as not even my bro had any stuff by them and he ended up handing down loads of stuff like Pearl Jam to me   Republica were pretty c**p, it has to be said, sorry mate... I just found their stuff bland, uninspiring and totally derivitive, about the only thing they had going for them was Saffron.... They had two good singles, but the rest was just instantly forgettable.... however compared to Izzy off Neighbours and her fellow 'Dodgy' Traders  probs equal to the second coming of Elvis  Garbage without ANY doubt! Bleed Like Me is one of the finest albums in my collection, and one of the few rocky (ish) ones too :P well i suppose you could have mentioned Beautifulgarbage at this point however, i suppose your argument would have been stronger if you had chosen the debut or version 2.0 m:lol: Shirley is a bloody legend too. So thats Dame Shirley Bassey your talking bout then???
June 26, 200718 yr Garbage - without any doubt. My personal opinion is that Curve are those who are over-rated. Of course we all know they did not have commercial success (they probably deserved better) but critically they are waaaay over-rated. I'm honestly sick of the Garbage-Curve comparison. Sure, there are obvious similarities in the sound of both bands but to say 'Butch Vig ripped Curve' has simply become a cliche. Almost like 'Garbage are garbage'. As much as I admire Toni and Curve as a whole, her voice has nothing on Shirley's voice. To me Toni's voice is pretty one dimentional, and Shirley's got the full spectrum. It actually grew a lot through the years. I am one of those who think that Garbage's first two records are their best material but I cannot notice how much Shirley's voice has bloomed. Just listen to Nobody Loves You (from Beautifulgarbage) or Right Between The Eyes (from Bleed Like Me). The notes she hits on those songs are pretty amazing. And it's not just the notes that have the influence on me. Her voice is full of passion - no matter if she's angry. depressed, joyful, dreamy or lusty - it always has the full emoition in it. As for Butch Vig's production skills - yes, they are overhyped because of that particular reason Grimly Fiendish mentioned (Nevermind). And it is undeniable that it's more mainstream than Moulder's production. However I still prefer it, cause it just seems to coincide with my personal preferences. To each their own I guess

June 26, 200718 yr I dont know if you can say Curve are over-rated when everyone is going on about Garbage Well no, because you seem to be confusing 'popular' with 'overrated'!

I thought someone of your obvious taste and intelligence would be able to see through this NME fad band and would've dismissed them long ago, as I have.... LOL! I know this is obviously a huge lapse on my otherwise flawless taste  but i really love their debut album. I even like their second one as well and I've got various singles as well. But then I like Menswear as well!
June 26, 200718 yr Oh yeah and if I did choose between the two then I would have to choose Curve as I was shocked how much Garbage did rip off Curve at times.
June 26, 200718 yr So thats Dame Shirley Bassey your talking bout then??? Oh my god, please tell me you did NOT just use that one.

To each their own I guess To be honest I dont really think it's fair to compare Toni to Shirley anyway, two totally different styles of singing, Shirley's a belter, Toni's a lot more understated... I think it's absurd to claim that Curve are "over-rated", no Curve, no Garbage, really is that simple tbh.... And just because it's a supposedly a "Cliche" to say that Butch Vig ripped off Curve's style doesn't mean it still aint actually true.... Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Garbage, their first two albums are amongst my faves in my collection, but I am not going to deny where they came from, because I was around at the time and I have a pretty in depth knowlege of Shoegaze, Indie, Grunge, etc.... Vig basically cherry-picked bits from several bands, Curve being the main one, Jesus and Mary Chain being another very obvious one as well in terms of the guitar style, and being cheeky enough to actually pretty much nick a song title as well - JAMC's "Happy When It Rains".... Basically, I like Garbage mainly because of Shirley Manson, Butch, I think is an over-rated borderline plagiarist.....

To each their own I guess Very very well said. You took the words right out of my mouth (except "Curve are those who are over-rated") :) Well no, because you seem to be confusing 'popular' with 'overrated'! The Curve seems to be underrated tbh. With a great promotion they could be more popular but in fact they are an indie band, so I suppose they don't care too much about that... Garbage isn't overrated at all Basically, I like Garbage mainly because of Shirley Manson, Butch, I think is an over-rated borderline plagiarist..... It hurts! :D :P
