June 26, 200718 yr This is what Toni Halliday (lead singer of the Curve) said about Garbage: It has been claimed by both Curve aficionados and music writers that British/American grunge-pop band Garbage appropriated large portions of Curve's musical template, and constructed from it more 'mainstream' material, albeit with a certain 'edge' remaining. Toni Halliday has occasionally commented on the comparisons between both groups, stating at one point - in an interview conducted by Volume magazine in 1996 - that she could "see bits of Garbage in what we've done, just like we see bits of Sonic Youth or the Valentines or really any band that was doing something supposedly outside the norm. In a way it's very flattering to be tied in with [Garbage drummer and co-producer]Butch Vig, not just because he's a brilliant human being, but because he's a brilliant producer, and he's worked on some of our favourite records. But eventually Garbage are a pop band, and Curve were never a pop band." Maybe the band is not yet green but some of their fans are green with envy. They will have forever something against Garbage. But they forget one thing: what they have to say about an influential band called My Bloody Valentine? ;) They consider Garbage like the worst enemy; how can Garbage dare to have so much success and our band (Curve) to be so unlucky? :P On the other side I like Curve too (Doppelganger album is fantastic!) and I found them different than Garbage... They are more rock but even at their most furious moments they can't beat the aggressive side of Garbage (Why Do You Love Me, Push It, Parade, Bad Boyfriend, I Think I'm Paranoid). "Fait Accompli" and "Clipped" are the best songs of Curve in my opinion. Garbage project is simply too perfect to be overwhelmed (the male members of the band are also the producers: how cool is that? :D ) Edited June 26, 200718 yr by Alin
June 27, 200718 yr Frankly, although I do like Garbage, I will never rate them as highly as Curve, simply for the reason that I was around during that whole scene when bands like Curve, MBV, Ride, Lush, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, etc were doing the rounds, and they really were "Indie" in the truest sense.... Curve were contemporaries of MBV Alin, it's not a case that Curve "ripped-off" MBV at all.... It took a LONG time for MBV to evolve into the glorious, masterful practitioners of beautiful Sonic Catharsis they became with the "Loveless" album.... Before that, they were a rather primitive bunch, sounding a lot like Jesus and Mary Chain... Their early EPs and mini albums such as "This Is Your Bloody Valentine" and "Ecstasy and Wine" were never really great indicators of what was to come with "Loveless" (in much the same way that Primal Scream's first two albums gave no indication of what they would achieve with the magnificent "Screamadelica"), of course later when MBV moved to Creation records and recorded "You Made Me Realise" and their excellent "Isn't Anything" album, there was some of the groundwork beginning to form, but it was still quite primitive and not quite fully formed (kinda like caterpillar [early eps/mini albums] to pupae ["Isn't Anything"] to glorious butterfly ["Loveless"]...). But inbetween the "pupae" and "butterfly" stages, Curve had already released two EPs - "Blindfold" and "Coast Is Clear"... Curve were always polished, never really sounding primitive, and were almost certainly one of the first Indie Rock/Alternative bands to marry rock guitars to Dance/Techno beats and rhythms, and certainly THE first to make it sound really quite amazing. Early Curve gigs were fantastic experiences (I should know, I was at several), Toni Halliday is an impressive frontwoman, exuding an icy, distant, gothic glamour.... And she had had an early solo career before meeting up with Dean Garcia as well... Curve deserved a LOT better than what they got, but then, I suppose if they'd had the producer of "Nevermind" playing drums for them, then I have little doubt it would be Curve that would be the multi-platinum sellers........ Sorry, but you cannot deny that a LOT of the initial interest in Garbage was the fact that it was "Butch Vig's band", no one knew who the fukk Shirley Manson was much beyond folks like me who'd heard Angelfish and Goodbye Mr McKenzie and it certainly kickstarted Garbage's career. It certainly did not hurt them to have Butch Vig attached to the project....

You are so lucky to catch those times when it was really good music! :) Sorry, but you cannot deny that a LOT of the initial interest in Garbage was the fact that it was "Butch Vig's band", no one knew who the fukk Shirley Manson was much beyond folks like me who'd heard Angelfish and Goodbye Mr McKenzie and it certainly kickstarted Garbage's career. It certainly did not hurt them to have Butch Vig attached to the project.... The Shirley's luck was when one of the future (then) band member Steve saw a video of Angelfish, "Suffocate Me". In fact Angelfish was dead when she joined Garbage. By the way, what other female singer (from any era) you see as Garbage front woman (considering Shirley never met Butch Vig & Co.)? June 27, 200718 yr By the way, what other female singer (from any era) you see as Garbage front woman (considering Shirley never met Butch Vig & Co.)? That's a good question actually.... Apart from Toni Halliday (who'd really be the natural choice other than Shirley IMO..), there are a few others who'd certainly be up to the task.... Cristina Scabbia - Lacuna Coil frontwoman (in her mid-30s she could almost be considered a contemporary of Shirley's, and LC started up in '97...) Amy Lee - Evanescence frontwoman Miki Berenyi - Lush frontwoman (she has quite a fragile voice, but could probably project a bit better with some vocal training..)

Apart from Toni Halliday (who'd really be the natural choice other than Shirley IMO..), there are a few others who'd certainly be up to the task.... Yeah, Toni is great Cristina Scabbia - Lacuna Coil frontwoman (in her mid-30s she could almost be considered a contemporary of Shirley's, and LC started up in '97...)I heard something about her but I never listened to any songs of them I'll check this band soon Amy Lee - Evanescence frontwoman Amy isn't so great but anyway... Her voice is just too shrill Miki Berenyi - Lush frontwoman (she has quite a fragile voice, but could probably project a bit better with some vocal training..) Again I should listen to some songs of them... ----- Another big question: can you list the best techno-rock bands (or rock with electronic music)? (My fave music genre is electronic music, next is rock) Thanks! :) Edited June 27, 200718 yr by Alin
