It sounds so rude from Darius's lips because he is such a courteous and charming guy but up there he wasn't Darius. He was a high rolling gambler in the forties and back then the 'help' didn't get more than a glance let alone a please. He stuck exactly to the script at all times when he was ordering drinks.
I noticed that every time. I also noticed the way he paused afterwards and the way he looked at the girl who played the waitress. I think he found that quite hard to do. It is so out of character but very Sky.

I should have said, Darius stuck exactly to the script (or as they quaintly call it in MT, the book) at all times, as did most characters. I think it was pointed out in London reviews that Michael Grandage had put more emphasis on the book than previous productions. Is it one of the reviews on here which describes Guys and Dolls as "wordy", like it's a negative thing?.

From Chicago, I'd have liked a couple of snaps from Razzle Dazzle e.g. the cane in the stomach (ouch!), the big expansive frozen grounded star jump for "sorcerer you are".

I'd love a clip of the puppet song. I just loved that. I'd like video though. Since I'm not going to get, I might as well try for the whole thing.
I would have liked a video of the Dive in tour, Guys and dolls and chicago but its never going to happen which I have never understood as others under the same management I think did get videos, correct me if Im wrong.

Wouldn't we all, Preston?

Sadly, we will have no record of D's performances, as a singer or actor, so long as he does theatre, rather than TV or film. The rules are clear. no means of any type of recording means in the auditorium.

It wouldn't be in the commercial interests of MT producers to allow a DVD of their shows. There would be no point in people making the effort to see it in the theatre.

Dive In is a different matter. 19 could have made non-downloadable official videos available on the official site, warned people that the quality wasn't the best and on that basis taken orders and payments for DVDs. Instead they simply drew a line under it and rushed Darius back onto the promotion treadmill for Sink Or Swim.

Wouldn't it be lovely if we could have dvds of the tour, 'Chicago' and 'guys and Dolls' ( the versions with Darius in). At least we have small clips on .net of the tour. My fave performance of all time was when Darius sang 'Mercury Rising' on tour. I loved the album version but live, it gave me goose pimples. Apart from that, it has had to be the accoustic sets - I just love his voice without all the production. He's at his best when he just relaxes and sings out. I do hope we get another accoustic set in the not to distant future.

Mercury Rising live - spine tingling!

From Chicago I'd like the elbow moment from We Both Reached For The Gun and another including Sally Ann from the bit where Darius is reinventing her life story. Weren't her expressions so good in both ?

They were. I've got it all in my memory at the moment but that has to fade as the years go by. The Chicago Rock Cafe I really, really enjoyed as well.
I had to go to Nottingham. Worth every mile travelled. The three girls in the car with me slept the whole way back. I was absolutely shattered - but happy.

I've seen the usual suspects on DS etc. trying to bully other people's fans because their guy is doing a show in Chicago Rock. Thank God, Darius isn't a snob who has to constantly burnish his image and he gigs wherever he deems more approprate for the setlist he wants to do. Darius's Abbey Road gig was just as intimate as any Chicago Rock but performers there, excluding Darius, get media attention and credibility simply because of the location. It's just snobbery.

I only wish Darius would do more gigs than he has, although I do understand the limitations of living thousands of miles away.

Choice of venue surely depends on the artists and what they want from the experience surely.

Sometimes it's far better, especially for a singer/songwriter, to be close enough to actually see how the music he/she created moves people. For example, IMHO James Morrison did not come over at all at the Diana concert.

Fauldhouse and Maidstone are still vivid in my memory because there I felt more connection. I could see the emotion, the hurt or happiness in Darius's eyes as he sang. It was real and direct, not filtered through any medium. It was a privilege to be there.

Arenas are fine for those acts who just want to do the business and make the money from extra bums on seats and above all from exploitative merchandise in the shortest time. I rarely go to see anyone on an arena tour because I don't enjoy the experience. If I wanted to see someone on video, I can buy the DVD later, when I can hear the songs clearly without the whistles and screams right beside me and the same people constantly trudging in and out to the toilets or the bar. There are big gigs all the time at the SECC and I was offered free tickets to see Bryan Adams in Edinburgh on July 21st but I didn't feel one spark of enthusiasm so I told them to ask someone else.

totally agree, intimate gigs are amongst the best and I have heard artists conveying that they are what they enjoy best - arenas are to make money - end of! I wouldnt go to a concert at one, even if Darius ....was a superstar, I wouldn't go see him perform at a huge gig.
Totally agree, really enjoyed Maidstone. I did go to see him in Plymouth PIP and hated it, there were whistles blowing in my ear the whole time. Back to the fact that there are no videos of anything like concert etc, why do you think this is, my feeling has always been that if there had been he would have taken off and perhaps this didnt suit the management who are pushing others. Just my thoughts. Its all politics isnt it re promotion etc etc etc. Thats how peope who get there and you cant understand why and those who should dont.

IMHO the Abbey Road gig is one example of just that.

I don't remember seeing anything at all in the media about it.

If it had been a certain someone else in SF's stable it would have been trumpeted for months in advance, with a whole promotional tour of radio and TV, and the gig itself would have been recorded for posterity and sold in some form to the fans, perhaps also getting a dedicated spot on channel 4/5. We would have heard endlessly about how prestigious it was for this person to sing in those hallowed surroundings.

Only recently there has been a series of TV programmes of sets from Abbey Road with accompanying brouhaha.

It's just one example of many things that are hyped up and deemed triumphs for others which are things Darius has done first without a word of publicity.

He doesn't seem to bother much. It's just the way things are. He just says that there are worse things happening. I don't think he ever expects things to be easy - and he's usually right.

It does make me so cross sometimes.

There may be worse things happening but it makes me think he doesnt really want it. He has been in the USA for a while now and cant believe that some things havent come up like gigs there even private ones or acting etc etc. Either his management arent pushing or he isnt really bothered. It just seems odd.
