October 29, 200717 yr Aw no...one of the most overrated outfits ever. 'Urban Hymns' is so poor. Agreed.. I was an early fan of "Verve" (before they were forced to add the "The" part), songs like "All In The Mind", "Gravity Grave", "Blue" and "Butterfly" were fantastic, and their first album "A Storm In Heaven" was truly excellent atmospheric, blissed-out Rock music. Their early shows were genuine happenings, and many of the bands they supported that were big at the time were just blown off the stage by them, Ride actually got so nervous, they cancelled Verve's support slot during their '92 tour  ... The second album "A Northern Soul", wasn't so bad either, but then they frankly just turned into "Dad Rock" sh!t.... "Bittersweet Symphony" is one of the most over-rated songs of the 90s, and "Urban Hymns" is a frankly tedious, over-rated album in comparison to the likes of "OK Computer", "Dog Man Star" and "Different Class".... I'm really not hopeful for this "re-union" to be honest, Ashcroft's solo career has hardly lit the world on fire, McCabe remains one of his generation's finest guitarists along with John Squire and Bernard Butler, but none of them have really gone onto anything like the levels of greatness they once had when they were in their respective original bands....
October 29, 200717 yr All this praise? Why? A completely awful band. I've only actually listened to Urban Hymns though, and after I have no desire to listen to anything else of theirs. "The Drugs Don't Work" IS a great song but the rest of the album is hideous. Ashcroft's solo work is no better either.

You should listen to their early stuff though mate, completely different band, they sounded genuinely fresh and exciting; "Storm In Heaven" is one of the best albums of that particular era.. And then maybe you'll understand my utter disappointment in their later material..... ;)
