Natalie Imbruglia - That Day

Lucie Silvas - Last Year

Garbage - Androgyny

Basement Jaxx - Lucky Star

Alanis Morissette - Everything (should have been Eight Easy Steps)

Firmly agreed on all of these, I'd rate all of these singles as among the worst works of these artists.

Geri Halliwell - Ride It

:o RIDE IT IS AMAZING well deserved no.1

Same with Emma - Free Me

Jamelia - Bout i agree thats odd  why release that when you have great songs like Superstar on an album but i still love Bout

Basement Jaxx - Hush Boy :kink:

Shakira - Don't Bother (Shoulda been Animal City or shoulda just waited for Hips Don't Lie in the UK)

Beyoncé - Deja Vu (Shoulda been Get Me Bodied, I think Irreplaceable will make a better follow up single)

Gwen Stefani - Wind It Up (Although, despite it's success, I don't think Sweet Escape would've made a better 1st single)

Kelly Clarkson - Never Again (I think One Minute would've been better as it has a more light hearted feel which I think is needed for a first single)

Fergie - London Bridge (Good for America but not for the rest of the world, Fergalicious had the potential to be as big as My Humps if it was the first single)

I think it's important to make a big impression with the first single so when it's a ballad that saves an album or becomes the defining hit, for instance Irreplaceable, I don't it would've done as well if it had been the first single. Same with Sweet Escape. They're the kind of singles which are better coming off the back of something.

As for Christina and ANOM, I don't think it was the wrong single, I don't think there was another song which could've done any better. Christing is more a victim of wrong second single. It should've gone ANOM, CandyMan, Slow Down Baby.

Deja Vu was definately the right single for Beyonce  Get Me Bodied would have no way got as high

I agree, I think the strategy a lot of record companies use is to release a weaker single first of all just to get the album out there, and as it's important to keep the album selling after that, save the stronger ones till later. It's not good if you release the strongest and most striking song first, and then have nothing to back it up with for future singles.

Which is what has happened to Kaiser Chiefs and Scissor Sisters amongst others...

A good song/big hit does help to spark off huge initial album sales though...just look at Rihanna getting a No.1 album off the back of Umbrella!

i love that day by natalie imbruglia

Me too, my third favourite song of hers (behind Shiver and Torn)

Geri Halliwell - Ride It

Lemar - It's Not That Easy

Geri Halliwell's 'Passion' album was completely rubbish from start to finish, so saying there was a bad single choice from it is completely irrelevant as there was nothing of any value to be released from that c**p. Besides, no-one really likes her. As for Lemar, 'It's Not That Easy' is generally considered one of his best songs and it certainly sold the album, he is arguably the most successful British solo artist from a reality TV show after Mr Will Young.

My choice for the topic would be:

Will Young, 'Switch It On' ( I like the song but he should have gone with the ballad 'All Time Love' for the Christmas period. It cost him sales for 'Keep On' over December.)

Daniel Bedingfield 'Nothing Hurts Like Love' (The single that virtually killed his career. A more drippy, irritating song you'd struggle to find, and it was a travesty that the much better 'The Way' missed the top 40 when this drivel made top 3.)

His Sis 'I Wanna Have Your Babies' (No thank you luv, we DON'T want to know all about your biological clock. Add to this nonsensical lyrics " I see them springing up like daisies " indeed and one of the most nausatingly cute videos in living memory and you have a recipe for disaster. Can 'Soulmate' rescue the album??)

And My Personal Favourite... I mean WORST: Gwen Stefani 'Wind It Up' (WTF was THAT all about? The person who chose this to kick things off on an album containing great songs like 'The Sweet Escape' and '4 In The Morning' should be hung, drawn and quartered. And if it was Ms Stefani, is she trying to sabotage her own career? Maybe she wants that No Doubt comeback more than we think...)

girlfriend by avril though good it is shouldn't have been the first single, on hearing innocence, that should have been the first single

Last Year by Lucie Silvas was a good choice, just under-promoted!

More recently, Andrea Corr's Shame On You was a disaster.

That was perfect too! :o A great song. I think half of these being mentioned had real potential but were just vastly underpromoted!
No, Rachel should of released So Good first :P then I said never again! Then released the album and it would of done a lot better! then maybe nothing good about this goodbye.

It's her biggest hit ever, how should it have not been?

'Innocence' makes me cringe. -_-

Rachel should have never released NWL, its one of the weakest songs on the album, and she did a lot of performances of it too, so i know lack of promo was not the problem. So Good or Crazy Boys...or even Waiting Game should have been singles instead.

I also think Mel C's I Want Candy was a HORRIBLE choice for a first single, what were the record company thinking? its been covered so many times and its so unoriginal, and to a release an album based off that, its no wonder This Time has flopped, i think this song ruined any chance she had of making her album a hit. Carolyna should have been the first single.

Melanie C is on her own record label  She released IWC because it was a movie tie-in and bagged her some cash lol. Carolyna wouldve been better though. Oh well, roll on Understand!
Nope, she said last night that shes continuing with it until December and then after January ;) :funky:
