June 29, 200718 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com June 28, 2007, Fred Bronson 'DANCE' AWAY: Paul McCartney returns to The Billboard Hot 100 at No. 69 with "Dance Tonight" (MPL/Hear), his first single to enter the chart since his collaboration with U2 on a remake of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" debuted three years ago this week. "Dance Tonight" is only the third McCartney song to appear on the Hot 100 in the 21st century. Before the "Sgt. Pepper" track spent one week on the chart, "Freedom" peaked at No. 97 in December 2001. That makes "Dance Tonight" the highest-charting solo McCartney single in the last 10 years, since "The World Tonight" landed at No. 64 in May 1997. Only counting McCartney's work away from the Beatles, "Dance Tonight" is his 45th entry on the Hot 100. That string of 45 singles began with the two-sided hit "Another Day" / "Oh Woman Oh Why" the week of March 6, 1971. Thanks to "Dance Tonight," McCartney's chart span away from the Beatles expands to 36 years and four months. Including his work with the Beatles, McCartney's Hot 100 chart span is 43 years, five months and three weeks, dating back to the debut of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" the week of Jan. 18, 1964. As a songwriter, McCartney's chart span on the Hot 100 is 44 years and one week old, harking back to the June 29, 1963 debut of Del Shannon's version of "From Me to You." McCartney is also on the Adult Contemporary chart with another track from the 'Memory Almost Full" album. "Ever Present Past" rises 26-21, becoming McCartney's highest-ranked single in five years. "Your Loving Flame" peaked at No. 19 in May 2002. THIS IS 'WHEN': Three years ago this week, Fantasia appeared on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the first time. "I Believe" debuted the first week of July 2004 and ultimately peaked at No. 12. The follow-up, "Truth Is," went to No. 2 in March 2005. That has been Fantasia's highest-charting song until this week. A move of 2-1 for "When I See U" gives Fantasia her first No. 1 hit on this chart. She is the first "American Idol" singer to achieve pole position on the R&B songs list; Ruben Studdard started his career with two No. 2 hits, "Superstar" and "Sorry 2004." Moving into the penthouse gives Fantasia the 128th No. 1 for the "American Idol" franchise, counting all national, domestic charts compiled by the Billboard Information Group. JOLLY BROLLEY: When you think of an umbrella, you think of Mary Poppins and Batman's arch-enemy the Penguin. Now you'll have to think of Rihanna, too, as her "Umbrella" (SRP/Def Jam) reigns over the Hot 100 for a fifth consecutive week. That makes "Umbrella" not only the biggest hit of Rihanna's career, but the biggest hit of 2007. No other song that has moved to the top of the chart this year has held sway for longer than three weeks. "Umbrella" is the longest-running No. 1 song since Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" ruled for 10 weeks from December 2006-February 2007. Rihanna's biggest hit prior to "Umbrella" was "SOS," which held post at No. 1 for three weeks in May 2006. WITH A LITTLE 'LUCK': Montgomery Gentry's 19th chart entry on Hot Country Songs is the duo's third song to lead the list. "Lucky Man" (Columbia) joins "If You Ever Stop Loving Me" (No. 1 for one week in July 2004) and "Something to Be Proud Of" (No. 1 for two weeks in October 2005) as the pair's biggest hits. "Lucky Man" is the 14th song to advance to No. 1 on the country chart in 2007. By this time last year, only 11 songs had moved into first place. The 14th No. 1 of 2006 didn't arrive until the week of Sept. 9. FLY HER TO THE 'MOON': Deborah Cox returns to The Billboard 200 after an absence of almost five years, and makes her debut on Top Jazz Albums. "Destination Moon" (Decca) debuts at No. 3 on the jazz survey, giving Cox her first charted title on this tally. On The Billboard 200, "Moon" appears at No. 175. It's the first album by Cox to show up on this list since "The Morning After" peaked at No. 38 in November 2002. 'LOST' FINDS A HOME: Bon Jovi's 14th chart entry, "Lost Highway" (Mercury/Island), debuts at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, giving the New Jersey band its third chart-topper, and its first in almost 20 years. The group hasn't been in pole position on this chart since the autumn of 1988, when "New Jersey" had a four-week reign. The band's first No. 1 album was "Slippery When Wet," which ruled for eight weeks in the fall of 1986.
