July 5, 200717 yr Sorry to disagree... but... Scale (1 to 100) New York Times 40 Rolling Stone 50 Boston Globe 50 NOW Magazine 60 All Music Guide 60 The Guardian 60 Of course there are some good reviews... but not that many Blender and Entertainment Weekly 80+
July 5, 200717 yr It doesn´t need a good review to be a success. Avril was slaughtered with TBDT and look how well she´s doing. Reviews are bullsh!t nowadays anyway. If all the reviewers were Kelly fans, then they would all be good reviews! If they don´t like her, they´re going to give her a negative review. In that case "Breakaway" must be a rubbish album because it got near universally great reviews.
July 5, 200717 yr I would say wait till next week and see how far it drops before saying it hasnt flopped. It could fall alot over the next couple of weeks Totally agree. You can't judge the success of an album on first week sales. Lets wait & see how it fairs long term.
July 5, 200717 yr Sorry to disagree... but... Scale (1 to 100) New York Times 40 Rolling Stone 50 Boston Globe 50 NOW Magazine 60 All Music Guide 60 The Guardian 60 Of course there are some good reviews... but not that many Blender and Entertainment Weekly 80+ Well, I think it did bad in reviews because it is a total opposite of Breakaway, it's very raw...I think it's amazing  . But we all have our own opinions, don't we?
July 5, 200717 yr Well, I think it did bad in reviews because it is a total opposite of Breakaway, it's very raw...I think it's amazing  . But we all have our own opinions, don't we? Well the consensus amongst the music critics is that it is her worst album to date: Metacritic.com (average scores out of 100) Kelly Clarkson albums: Be Thankful: 62 Breakaway: 79 My December: 53 And here are a handful of the reviews: KELLY Clarkson: My December (RCA) Daily Express Review (20 out of 100) Oh dear. Having found huge success with songs written by pop veterans, former American Idol winner Clarkson has decided it’s time to ditch them and make the album she has always wanted to. Big mistake. Devoid of decent melodies, the whole thing is an object lesson in the dangers of getting ideas above your station. The New York Times (40) "My December" isn’t a shocking change of direction, though it’s just not very good. Rolling Stone (50) Clarkson clobbers you over the head with her emotions and arena-ready choruses. The result is a record that's bland in some spots and annoying in others. All Music Guide (60) There are no hooks, nothing to suck in the many adults that liked Clarkson's first two records. The Guardian (60) She writes in bland generalities... and uses her opulent voice as a battering ram.
July 6, 200717 yr Why would you go out of your way to find all of that information just to say that MD is her worst album to date? Its her highest peaking album to date and will probably sell loads too. Look at all of the other female artists whose albums have peaked in the top 10, with good reviews, but then crashed the week after... Sophie Ellis Bextor, Mutya, Natasha Bedingfield, Beverley Knight... Kelly is still top 10. A good reviwe doesn´t mean it´s going to do well. It means that someone gave it a bad review and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. People are just so negative.
July 6, 200717 yr I love how you found only the negative comments...in case you couldnt spot the positive ones, here they are: Slant Magazine: 70% "For those with the misinformed idea that My December isn't mainstream enough, there's plenty of pop to be found in songs like "How I Feel" and "Can I Have A Kiss." Clarkson, however, sounds most at home on guitar-driven garage-pop like "Hole," and the greatest artists have taught by example that if you follow your instincts, the fans will usually follow." U-Entertainment: 75% "'My December' is easily the most interesting record to come out of the 'American Idol' juggernaut. 'Idols' come and go, but Clarkson will be around as long as she demonstrates this sort of commitment." About.com: 90% "It took 3 albums, but it appears that we've finally been introduced to Kelly Clarkson, the artist. My December is a celebration of what can happen when a top pop artist demands creative freedom. The album crackles with artistic commitment to the songs at hand. Clarkson has never been in better voice than she is here." B)
July 6, 200717 yr Look, to judge any album a FLOP or a HIT you need to compare it to the album that came before it. Kelly sold what some 6 million copies of "Breakaway" and essentially made her the largest female artist in the world, her label have spent A LOT on promo of MD and she has been promoting it on everything that breathes on US TV, so to sell 291k in her first week regardless of past first week sales is AWFUL and FLOP first week sales. I'm sorry but you cannot compare past sales to when she a more minor artist, she is COMPLETELY different now in terms of priority and status and her first week sales are a FLOP, BUT she can turn it around, the coming weeks will tell whether this album offers anything to anyone other than her core fanbase or is destined to do poorly. Anything below a million for this would make this a GOD DAMN AWFUL FLOP imo
July 6, 200717 yr Happy for Kelly, great to see her not flopping after all the stick the album's taken.

I was not implying that there were not good reviews at all
July 6, 200717 yr Actually Jake, Breakaway sold 10+ million worldwide. :P And I never trust critics anyway, but Never Again is one of the weakest tracks on the album, so I think you should judge the album for yourself rather then base it on a mixed bag of reviews.
July 6, 200717 yr I agree :P Never Again is the worst on the album. Songs like One Minute will turn people's opinions around.
July 6, 200717 yr I've been a Kelly fan since I first heard AMLT when it was first released in the US and I've liked her ever since I loved thankful & Breakaway however when I listened to My December, it's bland, boring, as one of the reviews said, it has no catchy songs whatsoever, the only decent song on the album is Irvine! Sort it out Kelly....she's doing a country album next, I heard
July 6, 200717 yr Lmao...whats One Minute if its not catchy? Dont Waste Your Time? They sound like theyve come straight off Breakaway.
July 6, 200717 yr I like it because it is very raw, and organic. So I think it's better then Breakaway personally.
July 6, 200717 yr Lmao...whats One Minute if its not catchy? Dont Waste Your Time? They sound like theyve come straight off Breakaway. Neither are catchy They just sound like Breakaway b-sides/album leftovers
July 7, 200717 yr Actually Jake, Breakaway sold 10+ million worldwide. :P And I never trust critics anyway, but Never Again is one of the weakest tracks on the album, so I think you should judge the album for yourself rather then base it on a mixed bag of reviews. 6 million US sales ;)
