Formed in 1964 they just missed the top spot in 1966 with their first charting single " Wild thing", it inspired hundreds of cover versions, their follow up got to #1 " With a girl like you".

Other hits included I can't control myself and Any way that you want me. The following year they had a hit with Love is all around, this would make writer Reg Presley undreamt of wealth as in 1994 Wet Wet Wet would take it to # 1 for 15 weeks. He promised to spend his new wealth on an investigation of crop circles.

They did not really do much for me to be honest.

agreed... they were ok pop, but not in the same league as the kinks, stones, yardbirds...

Incredibly under-rated. A really good singles band. I Can't Control Myself was banned in Australia for years.
is ESSENTIAL listening for any would-be musician (it's on a bonus disc with the Anthology :) )

They knew how to produce hit singles. Reg Presley was one of the BEST UK vocalisst. In France they were as big as the Stones. Listen to Jacques Dutronc or Ronnie Bird's mid 60's tracks and they're 100% influenced by thge Troggs. Almost every rock single produced in France in 1966 owes something to The Troggs. TRUE.

pete watertwat knows how to make hit singles, doesnt make him any good! :P

somehow the words 'french' and 'rock group' dont seem to go together, lol, now i see why :)

sorry but i dont agree that the troggs were anything other then a bog standard pop group, their legacy here is minimal. strictly division 2.

Here is the missing link between The Troggs and The Ramones

Antoine - Les elucubrations

This is the song that revolutionised French rock :D

Ronnie Bird - I Can Only Give You Everything

Jacques Dutronc - Les Cactus

All heavily influenced by The Troggs.

well its true that the troggs were refered to as 'punk' way before there was any 'punk' as a clear style... the nme used to refer to them as punk.

tbh im not really that bothered what happens in france, im british and am only really bothered about what happend here, especially as i was a nipper at the time. we lead the world in music, especially in the swinging 60's.

This Antoine guy is sooooo good. Remember British rock was Gerry & The Pacemakers and The Dave Clark Five at the time and the album chart was dominated by The Sound of Music and The Black & White Minstrals. Check out some more Troggs influenced pop

Antoine & Les Problems

Antoine - Un Éléphant Me Regarde

I can't find clips for some of the great French Troggs influenced girl-pop. But take a listen to the Pop a Paris collection on Universal and you'll get the drift.

The Troggs rule :P

eh?... not here it wasnt! the dave clark 5 and gerry and the pacemakers were NEVER 'rock'....pmsl. nor were the troggs ever at the cutting edge of pop or rock. (here.... the point being that france like the rest of europe followed what the uk was creating)
