I find his music dull and tedious by and large as a solo artist bar his 461 Ocean Boulevard album and his collaboration with JJ Cale but I have the entire Cream collections and Derek and the Dominoes which I love, there is no disputing his talent but as a solo artist he does nothing for me

Totally over-rated. The guy who wrote 'Clapton Is God' on the tube station is responsible for everything bad that's happened in rock music since. Even Layla and 461 Ocean Blvd are pretty poor albums. He toured Australia once and played a 30 minute set with his back to the audience the whole concert. From the Cradle's the most UNauthentic blues album of all time and Tears In Heaven ranks with The Living Years as the most insincere tribute to a dead person since "John Brown's Body Is A Mouldin' In His Grave".

If you play in a biker-blues band he rules, but, the way I see it, everytime you play one of his albums you spitting on the grave of Robert Johnson. (Even Cream's Crossroads is only a classic because of Tom Dowd's clever editing, without which it would have been a 15 minute wankfest)

Cream were a fantastic band, but Clapton solo is probably THE most tedious bore you can possibly imagine, I think he needs the band dynamic to kind of reign-in his tendencies towards tedium..... He is a talented guitarist, but at the same time, he is completely over-rated... IMO, Clapton is basically the Mariah Carey of the Guitarist World, technique is great, but actual music.... :puke2:

He once said that when he listened to Jimi Hendrix it almost made him quit playing..... Pity it didn't....

I totally agree with you. Anyone who totally dismisses EC should really listen to classic Yeardbird tracks such as For your love, Heart Full Of Soul, Shapes Of Things and Cream tracks such as White Room, Crossroads, White Room, Badge, Strange Brew, etc. His guitar solo on the Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is great too.

... But he has spent 35 years producing mediocrity that even Phil Collins would be embarrassed about. And the less said about the shocker that is "Wonderful Tonight" the better.

big mistake guys...

clapton left the yardbirds when they charted with 'for your love'... it was jeff beck who played on 'heart full of soul', 'shapes of things', 'evil hearted you', 'still im sad', 'over under sideways down', and 'happenings ten years time ago' (by which time jimmy page was also in the band).

i think clapton epitomises a great artist who rapidly catches 'the disease'... blandness. i think he was good in the early/mid 60's and lets not forget he was with john mayalls bluesbreakers in between the yardbirds and cream, id suggest his best work was then.

apart from 'layla', and 'behind the mask' im seriously bored with his blandness since cream/delaney and bonnie.

He made his best music when he was a drug addict. He's the worst ad yet for being 'clean and sober'.
I'm certain EC played on For Your Love but left soon afterwards because of the commercial/pop direction the Yardbirds were taking.

tbh i think he did play on it when it was recorded, but left almost immediately as you say, didnt agree with the commercial direction they were taking. i can only find clips/pics of jeff beck playing on 'for your love'. clapton was certainly well gone by 'heart full of soul' the follow up in july '65.

found this

"March 3, 1965, Bristol, England: Eric Clapton plays his last show with the Yardbirds, leaving the band; he subsequently joins the more 'purist' London blues group John Mayall's Blues Breakers. "

'for your love' entered the uk singles chart 3 days later. :)
