Posted July 6, 200718 yr The Russian city of Sochi (on the coast of the Black Sea) won the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympics after beating Pyeonchang (South Korea) on the final voting. Salzburgh (Austria) was eliminated in the first round. Pyeongchang who also lost very narrowly for Vancouver in the 2010 bid seemed to be the predicted winner but in the end Sochi overtook it by 4 votes. Sochi's high points are the small distance for all the facilities (25 minutes from Sochi to the mountains where the skiing events will take place), the huge support of the Russian government, Russia's importance in wintersports and the heavy touristic potential of the city (it joins beach and mountains, so it can be both a Winter and Summer resort). Its weakest point is that nothing is built yet and maybe seven years will not be enough for all the constructions to be accomplished. Whereas both salzburg and Pyongcheang had already builts most of its Olympic facilities. It will be Russia's second Olympic host after 1980 Summer Olympics.
July 7, 200718 yr I saw a documentary about their bid - the facilities will be fabulous if they manage to get them all finished I hope they do
