Was this song popular back in the 70's as it could just be a coincidence, Avril probably wasn't even born til the late 80's so may have never even heard the song.

You're forgetting the fact that Avril has a CO-writer in this as well... So, it may be possible that HE has.... And in any case, I find it impossible to believe that she wont have heard Toni Basil's "Hey Mickey", it's a classic 80s tune that still gets played...... So, she's still a dirty little plagiarist.....

Nine words out of the song are the same and she's a dirty plagarist? I put it down to coincidence myself, I don't think there's enough in it to say she ripped it off.

The similarity to Hey Mickey is evident, but in this case, I don't think it's plagarised.

One wonders if maybe she heard it a long time ago in the background somewhere and the riff was stuck somewhere in the back of her brain...

Oh come on mate, her and her co-writer just glued them together and hoped no one would actually notice.... UH UH, WRONG!!!!! We damn well did notice.... Sorry, but this pretty cavalier "cut-and-paste" bullsh!t approach to "songwriting" is just becoming ridiculous.... Modern Pop Music is a fukkin' joke. It's taking the p!ss.....

Coming up with the lyrics "Hey You" and "I want to be your girlfriend" isn't rocket science. I doubt she needed help from this old band to think that up in no more than 5 seconds.

Coincidence.

As I said earlier .... both songs are cr*p! Don't know what the fuss is about! It's not like we're talking Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Life on Mars, or any decent bloody song. Pile of Poo!

Na ... I think that in this case it's just coincidence ... wanting to date someone is hardly a rare topic to write a song about, I think saying "I want to be your girl/boyfriend" is a lyric that comes up fairly regularly  I put it down to coincidence for this one.

I think it's not about the lyrics (well, it is) but the fact it sounds similar. The hey (hey!) you (you!) I want to be your boyfriend is in the same vein as Girlfriend. I still think it's a coincidence.

Yeah, and the fact that it sounds very similar to Toni Basil's "Hey Mickey" as well is 'coincidence' too I suppose......

Oh, and now there's talk of her ripping off Peaches as well.... Another 'coincidence' presumably......

She's nothing more than some LA fake-ass b**ch now, she was doing SO much better when she was just being herself back in the "Sk8er Boi" days... And please don't call it "developing as an artist" because I dont call blatant plagiarism and dressing up like some skanky LA hooker for a sleazy photoshoot "artistic development"...

Well seeing as Avril Lavigne has gone from in the beginning ripping off Alanis Morissette image & sound to ripping off Kelly Clarkson's image & sound (ironically Kelly has done the reverse to disasterous results!) it is hardly too surprising.

Yeah, she did have the whole "watered-down teenage Alanis" thing going... , but even so, that was still more about her being herself than what she's become now....
