Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

For her sixth week, Rihanna has remained at the No.1 spot on the Australian ARIA Charts with the single "Umbrella", although if history repeats, this is most likely her last week at the top of the charts, as the single is no longer the No.1 Download song (No.3 down from No.2), whereas "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie is sitting at No.1 on the Download Charts for a second week, was released (July 7th) for the next chart week (16th July), and as the song is splattered all over the airwaves, and is being issued in different versions, it all adds up to being next week's possible new No.1.

A proven and tested theory to my above analysis comes in the form of the first of three new entries inside the Top 15, at No.2 is "Dance Floor Anthem" by Good Charlotte. This song has been climbing the Download Charts for the past eight weeks, having landed in the Top 10 several weeks ago, and this week it is up to No.2. So with strong sales, a building Download, plus widespread airplay (plus the song's good), the post-punk group now have their highest placed single ever on the Australian charts. Their previous effort only came just this year, when the first single from their "Good Morning Revival" (No.26 this week) album "Keep Your Hands off My Girl" reached No.5 in March of this year.

Debuting just outside the Top 10 at No.11 is "Spirit of the Bush", a collaboration between Lee Kernaghan, Adam Brand and Steve Forde, plus all proceeds go to AUSSIE HELPERS, a team of volunteers whom assist Aussie farming communities that have been hit hard by the drought. Last weekend a concert was held in outback NSW in the town of Grenfell (July 1st), which also featured such performers as Wesley Carr, Shae Fisher, The McClymonts, Diesel, and Leo Sayer. Of the three artists, Lee Kernaghan is the only one to have hit the Top 50 before, when back in September 2004 he made No.49 with his tribute to Slim Dusty, "Missin' Slim".

Akon has already had two solo Top 10 singles this year, plus he also appeared as a guest vocalist on "The Sweet Escape" with Gwen Stefani (No.32 this week), and this week he debuts at No.13 with his third single from the "Konvicted" album, "Don't Matter". The previous two singles were "Smack That" (No.2, Jan 2007) and "I Wanna Love You" (No.6, Feb. 2007), plus this now becomes his sixth solo single, and eighth chart appearance, having also been a guest on Savage's "Moonshine" single (No.9, Nov 2005).

A fourth Top 50 entry comes in at No.45, "Black Tattoo" by Aussie rockers Grinspoon. Their last chart entry actually came in one place higher at No.44 back in February 2005, "Hold On Me".

Michael Buble has now doubled his previous best effort at the top of the Australian Album charts this week by staying at No.1 with "Call Me Irresponsible" for a fourth non-consecutive week. His self-titled debut only last two weeks at the top, and now this week his third album doubles that initial effort.

Debuting at No.2 is "Time on Earth" the first new studio album for Crowded House in 14 years (Together Alone), and first new release in 8 years (After Glow). I was hoping that it would debut at the top of the charts and create some new history, but we'll see if it does that next week. But in the meantime there is some other chartifacts that I can tell you about the groups lead singer, Neil Finn, for he alone holds a unique record on the Australian Charts.

Neil Finn has hit the top of the Album charts under three different guises, once as a solo artist (Try Whistling This, June 1998), three times as a trio with Crowded House (1987, 1988 and 1996), and three time previously as a member of Split Enz (1980, 1981 and 1982). So he has hit the No.1 spot on seven different occasions, and those seven times are the only times that any New Zealand performer's have been at No.1 on the Australian charts. So if he and Crowded House make it to No.1 next week, there'll be some more achievements of note, but we'll wait and see next week.

Debuting at No.6 is the new album by Sydney Church organization Hillsong, "Savior King". Since 2004 when they hit No.1 with "For All You've Done", every year has brought another album into the charts around the time of their gatherings, with last years "Mighty to Save" only hitting No.25, but July 2005 album hit No.2, "God He Reigns", and also this week their former No.6 album "All of the Above" re-enters the Top 50 at No.45.

The first Velvet Revolver album "Contraband" debuted and peaked at No.2 back in June 2004, and this week see's their second album "Libertad" enter the charts at No.10.

The Chemical Brothers' new album "We Are the Night" debuts at No.18, their first album since January 2005's "Push the Button" reached No.5. All of their previous studio albums have reached the Top 10, with 2002's "Come With Us" reaching No.1. Their lowest charting album was their Best Of collection "Singles 93-03" (Oct. 2003) which just scraped into the Top 50.
