Posted July 14, 200718 yr He began his career in the late 70's as a session keyboard player for Lene Lovich, he was interested in gadgetry and technology. His song She Blinded me with Science reached #5 in the US mainly down to the video featuring Dr Magnus Pyke, it became a firm favourite on MTV. His next single was Hyperactive which made the top 20 here, he then ventured into writing movie soundtracks. Was it his fault that Howard the Duck was so bad  , and Gothic. He went on to play keyboards for David Bowie at Live Aid, and produced Prefab Sprouts LP Steve McQueen,From Langley Park to Memphis, and Belinda Carlisle's LP Heaven on earth. He also worked with Foreigner and Def Leppard. He returned to the music scene in 92 with a top 30 hit Close but no cigar. I think he was too clever by half, and the general public just didn't get him. :)
July 14, 200718 yr Author didnt like him, let alone 'get' him... so you would agree with the statement, too clever for his own good
July 15, 200718 yr I totally agree he was to clever for his own good. He definitely had that "mad scientist wanting to be Prince" about him. My favourite track by him was the very jazzy: oJVyCNucqeM Thomas Dolby - I Scare Myself
July 15, 200718 yr I loved She Blinded me With Science, remember having to order it from the local Our Price. It really should have been huge. Didn't know it went Top 5 in the states tho'.
July 16, 200718 yr I think he was too clever by half, and the general public just didn't get him. :) Well seeing as he kinda invented polyphonic ringtones, v clever Thomas says There have a been a lot of questions about Polyphonic Ring Tones. In August I'll be teaching seminars in London and Helsinki on this topic. The latest Nokia phones that support SP-MIDI tones(3510,7210,7650 etc) use a technology called the Beatnik Audio Engine. I co-founded Beatnik and worked closely with Nokia on the new handsets and on the SP-MIDI specification. I also programmed some of the tones that ship on these devices, so I have quite a lot of insight into special techniques for making polyphonic tones. In the right hands they can sound much, much better than the old SMS tones. This could rapidly become a new artform AND a huge business opportunity. So if you're a MIDI composer, mobile application developer or ring tone vendor who would be interested, please come down to my seminar! The details are below. Best, Thomas Thomas Dolby's Polyphonic Ringtone composition workshops: August 16th 2002--SAS Radisson Royal, Helsinki, Finland August 20th and 21st 2002--Soho House, London, UK “Composing Polyphonic Ring Tones” NEW DATES ADDED: October 18th 2002--CTIA Wireless Conference, Las Vegas, USA November 7th 2002--Nokia Mobile Internet Conference, Munich, Germany See below for details THOMAS DOLBY is a renowned musician and an expert in composing for the Beatnik Audio Engine software synthesiser that’s embedded in the very latest mobile devices from Nokia and Danger (aka T-Mobile Sidekick). In this all-day, hands-on workshop he covers many of the composition and programming techniques needed to get the best sounds out of this year’s funky new phones. During this one-day course you will learn: How to configure your preferred MIDI sequencer to make polyphonic tones (Mac or PC) How the BAE wavetable synthesiser and mixer work About the BAE’s General MIDI soundbank SPMIDI--The 3GPP’s newly-ratified industry standard file format How to make a MIP message and add it to your MIDI file Differences in implementation between handsets (eg Nokia 3510/3585/3590/3650/6610/7210/7650, Danger Hiptop) Picking the right instrument and register for best audibility Techniques for making little speakers sound huge Using real-time MIDI controllers for tweaked effects Optimising for smallest file size/fastest download time Using the Beatnik Editor to simulate a specific handset Clearance, Copyright and Publishing issues What’s around the corner in 2003? It was during this period that Braide worked with producer Thomas Dolby on the single "Funny Five Minutes". In 1993, Braide spent six weeks in Italy recording tracks with Mick Hucknall and Gota Yashiki, who were then looking for new artists to produce. Hucknall was played several demo tapes by Polydor A&R man Paul Morgan, but it was Braide's that attracted his attention. Although the resultant album was never released, tracks were re-recorded for a later album produced by Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics). http://www.discogs.com/release/182462 http://freespace.virgin.net/thomas.dolby/assets/images/lg-aliens-cd-cvr.jpg to : Thomas Dolby's album Aliens ate my Buick (as Buicks are popular in China!!!)
