Formed in 1976 they provoked unwarranted controversy with the song "Killing an arab". They signed to the Fiction label, but early commercial success alluded them. They released some bleak sounding records in the early 80's, and in 82, they released Lets go to bed, its accompanying video marked the beginning of a long association between the band and director Tim Pope. The growing darkness defined their style for the next few years.

Songs like The love cats, The caterpillar, In between days,Close to me, Boys don't cry, and they videos to the songs, soon made them a household name.

They were my 3rd favourite alternative act of the 1980s behind The Smiths & Depeche Mode.

My favourite track by them was the bonus track from their first Singles Collection - Standing On The Beach:

Cure - A Night Like This (1985)

  • 4 weeks later...

My fave 3 songs of them:

Lullaby

Just Like Heaven

Pictures of You

Let's Go To Bed remains one of the most per4fect pop songs ever written.

Other gems included Why Can't I Be You?, Friday I'm In Love, Lullaby, Night Like This, Killing an Arab, The Walk and Lovecats... a GREAT singles band, but some of the albums were self-indulgent nonsense..... and they haven't done a single thing worth listening to since 1992 :(

About the only album of theirs I really detest is "Wild Mood Swings".. "The Top" isn't really much to shout about either... And, mate, I reckon you're dead wrong, "Bloodflowers" is an excellent album (but you have to be in the right mood for it...) and the self-titled 2004 effort is pretty decent effort too....

To answer the question of how influential they are, it can be summed up in one word - very... The roots of 'Alternative' music basically lies in everything The Cure has ever done, bands like Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, A Perfect Circle, Deftones all talk about how Robert Smith was influential to them.. My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy make similar claims, but they just drop the name to look "cool", because if they really are influenced by The Cure, then they are totally missing the point....

someone should challenge Fall Out Boy and My Comical Romance to name 5 Cure songs (as they're such an influence).

Neither of them would be able to  :D

well (apart from the obv look) rather than being what you could think of 'alternative' most of the songs i know i would just think of it as 80s pop same similar to that another pop video masters of the time madness (obv this probs would be cat as 'pop that matters' to use a phrase that was in the Johnny Marr interview in the word. note: this charming man, sounds great next to i'm a believer, even better when your hammered )
