July 15, 200718 yr Chartifacts (Thanks to Gavin Ryan) 5-4-3-2-1! The countdown to this weeks new No.1 single in Australia began back in September 2006 when the female singer from the group The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, debuted with her debut solo single "London Bridge", which debuted and peaked at No.3. She then followed that up in December with "Fergalicious" which eventually peaked at No.4 in January 2007. Single number three was the recent No.2 hit "Glamorous" which entered the charts in April, and peaked in May for a week. Now the fourth single from her album "The Duchess" (up to a new peak of No.6 this week), "Big Girls Don't Cry" enters the charts at No.1. She's now had a chart placing at No.4, No.3, No.2 and No.1, plus the 5 comes in the form of it being her fifth appearance in a No.1 song. She has been at the top of the Australian charts with The Black Eyes Peas on four previous occasions, with "Where is the Love" (Aug 2003, 6 weeks), "Shut Up" (Dec 2003, 3 weeks), "Don't Phunk With My Heart" (May 2005, 3 weeks) and "My Humps" (Nov 2005, 2 weeks). Another chart feat has also been broken, something which hasn't happened since July to October 2000. With Fergie hitting the top, she becomes the fourth female in a row to top the Australian singles chart, previous three were Rihanna, Missy Higgins and Avril Lavigne. Well back in July 2000, Anastacia hit the top with "I'm Outta Love" for 5 weeks, followed by "Music" by Madonna, then "On a Night Like This" by Kylie Minogue and the fourth was Pink with her first No.1, "Most Girls". So not since then have we had a four females at the top. "Big Girls Don't Cry" now becomes the 924th No.1 single in Australia, and it's the second time that that song title has been to the top of the charts. Back in January 1963 the Four Seasons took a different song/same title to the top for a single week. This has happened five times before, there's been "Angel" by Madonna (1985) and Shaggy (2001), "I Should Have Known Better" by The Beatles (1964) and Jim Diamond (1985), "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis & The News (1985) and Jennifer Rush (1985)/Celine Dion (1994), "SOS" by Abba (1976) and Rihanna (2006), and "Venus" by Frankie Avalon (1959) and Shocking Blue (1970)/Bananarama (1986). To release six singles off an album is a rare feat, but to have five of those reach the Top 10 is a rare feat, as generally when an album has reached 7xPlatinum it's exhausted it's single selling power, and they don't climb very high. That 7xPlatinum selling album is Pink's "I'm Not Dead" which is still sitting at No.4 this week, and the sixth single debuts at No.6 on the charts, being "Dear Mr. President". Her previous tracks from the album are listed below... PRESIDENT 6 1* 1 6 * still charting The third new entry comes in at No.11, "Love Stoned" by Justin Timberlake. It's the eighth solo Top 40 single in Australia for JT, and his first non-Top 10 solo single, but he has previously climbed up the charts after debuting, so next week it could be his eighth Top 10 single also. It's the fourth single taken from his "FutureSex/LoveSound" album (No.27 this week), the previous three being "SexyBack" (No.1 for two weeks, Aug. 2006), "My Love" (No.3, Nov 2006) and "What Goes Around.. Comes Around" (No.3, March 2007), which is still charting, this week it's at No.37. Akon debuted at No.13 last week with "Don't Matter", and this week he climbs three places to gain his third consecutive Top 10 single, now giving him a total of four Top 10's. The fourth new entry of the week is at No.45, and it's is a former No.1 Club single in Australia, "NYC Beat" by Armand Van Helden. He was last on our charts back in 2005 when "Into Your Eyes" reached No.28, whilst his biggest track is the No.6 single "My, My, My" from November 2004. Crowded House have been doing a heap of publicity the past week for the new album "Time on Earth", plus appearing at Live Earth has helped push their new album to the top of the Australian Album charts this week. It now becomes their fourth No.1 album, and puts them in a unique group of acts that have reached No.1 in the past three decades. The others have been Jimmy Barnes, Bon Jovi, John Farnham, Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2 and The Twelfth Man, all having No.1's in the 80's 90's and noughties. There are two acts who have achieved more that three decades, with The Rolling Stones doing it in four, and The Beatles doing it over the past five decades. It seems that this time of year is ideal for Crowded House or Neil, as they have appeared at No.1 either during June or July every time that have hit No.1. This week in 1988 (19 years ago) they spent a single week at the top with their second album "Temple of Low Men" (18-July), plus their debut album stayed atop for a single week (8-June-1987), then "Recurring Dream-The Best of" was No.1 for 10 weeks from July 21st, 1996 (next week 11 years ago), and finally there was Neil's solo album "Try Whistling This" which was spending it's second week at the top last week nine years ago (from June-28th, 1998). Of the three Split Enz albums, one hit the top during, whilst the other two were April No.1's. Date No. Wks Amt. He is now only the second artist to have reached No.1 whilst appearing in three different guises/groups. He's done it Solo, and in two groups; Split Enz and Crowded House. The other person to do this is Paul McCartney, who hit No.1 as a solo act, with The Beatles and with Wings. It's the fifth appearance at No.1 for the word 'Time', and also the second one for Neil, as Split Enz had an album in 1982 called "Time and Tide", whilst it's the first time that the word 'Earth' has taken the top spot. It's the eighth New Zealand performed album to reach No.1, all the previous one's have been containing Neil Finn, Crowded House, Split Enz and his solo album, and "Time on Earth" also becomes the 265th No.1 album by a group. The highest new entry this week comes in at No.8, the latest album by Paul Kelly, "Stolen Apples". It's his first Top 10 since 2001's "...Nothing But a Dream", and he was last on the album charts back in June 2005 when "Foggy Mountain" (which featured The Stormwater Boys) reached No.22. In 2004 Interpol took their debut album "Antics" to No.21 (4-Oct-2004), and this week their second album to hit the Australian Top 50 debuts at No.14, "Our Love to Admire".
