IT sounds like Sheffield is about to kiss goodbye to the ARCTIC MONKEYS.

The fiercely proud Yorkshire lads have always vowed to stay in the home city which inspired so many of their hit songs.

but frontman ALEX TURNER has confessed a relocation to London is now on the cards — because the band have been spending so much time in the Big Smoke. Alex has a couple of major concerns, though.

For one, he will have to overcome the writer’s block that kicks in everywhere other than his old bedroom at his parents’ house. Plus he is worried about coping without his mum helping him with his laundry.

The poor wee lamb, er . . . chimp.

Alex said: “I tried to write some stuff yesterday in a hotel room — and it were just rubbish. “So maybe I do just need to be back in my bedroom at home. “We haven’t spent a great deal of time in Sheffield lately and maybe after this year we might want to go somewhere else. “Staying in Sheffield is not a deliberate we-want-to-stay-away-from-London thing. We’re not afraid of living in London. “It’ll be a real hassle not having our mums to get washing done, though.”

I revealed last week that Alex had started signing his name as “Aleks” now that he’s an uber-cool songwriter with No1 albums under his belt. And now that he’s planning a move down south, he’ll no doubt be shopping for organic food in Notting Hill before we know it.

I don’t know how guitarist JAMIE COOK will survive away from the beloved local amateur footie team he plays for either.

Alex’s ex-girlfriend Johanna Bennett has also revealed how the Arctics’ new single Fluorescent Adolescent came about — and how much the memories mean to both of them.

The pretty brunette, whose band TOTALIZER have just signed a deal with EMI, said of the track: “We were on holiday and had cut ourselves off from everything. “We were in a really quiet hotel and didn’t watch TV or listen to that much music.“So as not to drive each other mad we started messing around with these words like a game, singing them to each other.“It’s great to think that the song came from something we did for fun on holiday.“It’ll always be a good memory for Alex and me. “He doesn’t usually write lyrics with other people, though I think he enjoyed it.”

It’ll be good to have the boys in London — especially if they get up to monkey business. Which, by the sounds of things, could help Alex’s writer’s block. He added: “It’s funny though, ’cos when I am hung over I can think of a lot of stuff.”

All the more reason to get stuck into my Caners League then, Alex . . .

Another great piece of journalism by Victoria Newton...

But you can see why they might be considering moving to London, it will make things a lot easier for the band even though they'll be leaving their roots.
