Posted July 17, 200718 yr plans are afoot to make human organ donation the default setting for hospitals. apparently the government want to make organ donation alot easier, so to cut corners trying to get permission from next of kin, they want to have organ donation as a done job. you would be able to opt out of the scheme, but otherwise doctors/surgeons will be able to take what they want without permission. is this a good thing?
July 17, 200718 yr No, it should be voluntary When I die I want to go to my grave whole not cut up in pieces and have stuff taken out of me Organ donation should be voluntary
July 17, 200718 yr I'm already dontating mine apparently, they asked me on my form for my provisional driving license and I said I'd donate them all. At least that way it ensures I'm dead though before I'm burnt/buried.
July 17, 200718 yr I still think that it is morally wrong to loot dead bodies of organs automatically by default, when die want to be buried with dignity and go to the grave looking dignified, the idea that someone might chop me up and take pieces of my body away is just repugnant as far as I am concerned I think people should opt in as opposed to opt out
July 17, 200718 yr Author im not keen on the idea tbh, i kinda agree with craig here.... not that our old bodies would have anything worth salvaging anyway! lol, especially my liver! alot of people who need transplants do so because theyve not looked after their bodies. sorry but if i had abused my body then thats tough.... i dont expect a second chance.
July 17, 200718 yr I have NEVER understood people who refuse to donate their organs, never never never. What in the hell does it matter what your body looks like if you're DEAD!? And everyone throws around that word "dignity." Personally I think in a world where thousands upon thousands of people DIE WAITING FOR ORGANS, to insist your dead body have all its organs SO THAT THEY CAN PROMPTLY ROT IN A TOMB is undignified, unethical and ridiculous. I never expected this kind of talk in THIS forum, where everyone is usually so rational about matters of spirituality vs. science.

Oh come on, this is not a fair generalization. And anyway they take into account many many things before they give you a new organ. An alcoholic will not get priority over a child with cancer in his liver.

You are entitled to your opinion BUT Having us draw our last and then be cut up would make us like cattle, pigs, sheep etc who have their carcasses butchered and mutilated after death that is not going to happen with me under any circumstances, I want to be treated with respect and dignity when I die and be dressed in my best outfit for my funeral I do not want to be butchered and carved up like some animal When I came out the womb I was whole and intact and thats how I want to go to my last resting place
July 17, 200718 yr Author I have NEVER understood people who refuse to donate their organs, then dont try... respect other peoples opinions.
July 17, 200718 yr Is a difficult area - because even tho I have given permission for my organs to be donated - next of kin permission is still required. So is possible next of kin - is a distressed state could over ride my wishes. When i am dead - I am dead - full stop. I don't need any of my organs ..... don't have any problem with them being used. Have a close relative who has a heart transplant .... he would be dead without the donor. I agree that organs should be taken for transplants - BUT think it would be open to abuse. but as long as body is respected for sake of relatives - and donations taking quickly and repsectfully - what is the problem? July 17, 200718 yr I think people should opt in as opposed to opt out nice idea - but people never like opting in - it's the same as people making wills - people hate doing it as it's associated with death. I can't understand the mentality of anybody who would rather someone die desperate for a kidney transplant than donate theirs when they die because they want to be whole when the maggots get started - it's ludicrous.
July 17, 200718 yr everyone is entitled to their own opinions - can we not discuss this without insulting each others point of view?
July 17, 200718 yr alot of people who need transplants do so because theyve not looked after their bodies. sorry but if i had abused my body then thats tough.... i dont expect a second chance. I generally find Rob's comments some of the most insightful on BJ... however, this is one of the most deeply offensive and utterly incorrect messages I've ever ever read on this site. My Dad had a kidney transplant 20 years ago and it served him for nearly 10 years when he passed away due to another illness..... he certainly hadn't abused his body in any way at all. The kids fighting to live, the race against time because they will die if they don't get a liver, kidney... it's just too awful to think about. Maybe if some of the folk on here had kids who were in a position like this, they'd see how absolutely preposterous their views on organ donation were - and as for the folk wanting to go to the maggots 'whole'. Oh dear.... one question... WHY? Your organs can save umpteen lives...... I'd rather give my organs to a person desperate for them than an army of maggots, thankyou very much. And as for this whole 'butchering' nonsense.... when an organ is taken from a dead body - everything is left as it was before... you are carefully stitched back up and, when your best suit is on, nobody would know the difference.

And as for this whole 'butchering' nonsense.... when an organ is taken from a dead body - everything is left as it was before... you are carefully stitched back up and, when your best suit is on, nobody would know the difference. unusually you missed my point.... my criticism was leveled at those who have not looked after their body through excessive living, then expect by right to be in line for a transplant. the examples you highlight do not fit that criteria. i believe that we have a duty to look after our bodies, and if we dont then we should except the consequences.
July 17, 200718 yr You are entitled to your opinion BUT Having us draw our last and then be cut up would make us like cattle, pigs, sheep etc who have their carcasses butchered and mutilated after death that is not going to happen with me under any circumstances, I want to be treated with respect and dignity when I die and be dressed in my best outfit for my funeral I do not want to be butchered and carved up like some animal When I came out the womb I was whole and intact and thats how I want to go to my last resting place What difference it makes, since a few weeks on and you´ll be eaten by worms? I don´t think the dignity of a dead body is more important then the health of a living person, a letting someone blind, sick, or dying because of that is more repugnant to me then being mutilated. The only bad thing is... I don´t know how it works in UK but in my country you can´t legally sell blood or organs, which means if you donated you or your family won´t get a cent, HOWEVER, when you need a blood transfusion or a new organ you have to pay a horrible amount of money, which means in fact, organs ARE sold but who gets the money is not the person/family who donated it... and that kinds of pisses me off. I know it cause recently a friend of my family needed blood tranfusion and have to pay a huge amount for that, HOWEVER when I donated blood all I received was a sandwich. (Not that I am complained cause I wanted money, but I thinkit should be given for free).
July 17, 200718 yr But, by the way, I don´t think it should be obrigatory... if people want to donate, then they have to say so...
July 17, 200718 yr then dont try... respect other peoples opinions. Oh I do, I promise... it's just one of those areas where I've yet to hear a rational, reasonable defense of organ donation refusal. I believe it's because there is no rational or reasonable justification for not donating one's organs. Now if it's a personal belief, fine, the law allows you to act upon that belief.
July 17, 200718 yr but as long as body is respected for sake of relatives - and donations taking quickly and repsectfully - what is the problem? You bring up a really good point here. Grieving relatives often don't make sound choices. When one's close kin dies, especially unexpectedly, one doesn't want to think authorize removing the organs and such... On that point, personally I'd like to be cremated in a cheap, plywood box with little or no pomp and circumstance. But I know my family would want to have the funeral and the casket and all that...all a waste of money, in my mind... but part of the grieving process I guess. But I digress... July 17, 200718 yr I think everyone should have its own right to decide. I would like to donate my organs after I'm gone. They can take everything it could help saving someone's life. Edited July 17, 200718 yr by Irene
