any fans?... opinions?

like the beatles they soon evolved from playing rather primitive, weak pop into one of the most innovative groups of the 60's. by '66 and 'pet sounds' they had the beatles interest, watching what they were doing...

personally i couldnt abide the 'surf' sound.... but tracks like 'heroes and villains' were superb. 'god only knows' and 'good vibrations' are abit overplayed tbh, abit too pretty, and although 'good vibrations' starts well... i never thought it finished properly, its like they had the superb inspiration but didnt know how to finish it. its 'half a classic' to me.

"Not my cuppa tea".

However, Pet Sounds is obviously a great album if you can ignore the utterly dire Sloop John B.

God Only Knows, Caroline No, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times are sublime, heartfelt pieces of songwriting & music by Brian Wilson.

Personally I was never a huge fan of their music, although I admit to humming a few lines if one of them comes on the radio :D.

They were huge in the States though, I remember reading that original member David Marks who was only in from 1961 to 1963 was able to live of the royalties for years and years.

Don't think they could ever get away from the surfin sound, tbh even when they tried later on.

Liked some of their stuff, my fave is God Only Knows.

God Only Knows probs one of the best recorded songs ever!!!

The end of 'Good Vibrations' is my favourite bit...it's a fantastically crafted pop song.

I saw Brian Wilson live at T in the Park this year, the highlight by far. He finished with a massive encore of the likes of Good Vibrations, Barbara-Ann, Surfin' USA, Johnny B Goode, I Get Around......

Just fantastic.

One of my fave US bands of the 60s

I wasn't keen on their very early stuff but I loved most of their music from I Get Around in 1964 to Lady Lynda in the 70s.

My 5 real fave singles are:

Good Vibrations

Heroes & Villains

Do It Again

I Can Hear Music

Lady Lynda

The tune of Lady Lynda was taken from Bach's classical Jesu Joy

Good Vibrations is just classic from start to finish. One of the best songs ever written as far as I'm concerned.

Never have been into Pet Sounds and I haven't heard Smile yet but I love Smiley Smile, there is some seriously whacked out stuff on there. Not surprising really when you consider the state Brian Wilson was in when he was making the record.
