Posted April 30, 200619 yr Anyone heard of this brazilian singer? She is huge over here, and she is also sucessful in Argentina, Portugal and a few more countries... As a member of the Tribalistas projects she enjoyed sucess in various countries across the world, which isn´t common for a portuguese language album. She recently released 2 simultaneous albums, called "Infinito Particular" (particular infinite) and "Universo ao meu redor" (universe around me), and both have shipped over 300,000 right from the start in Brazil (which is huge for our market standards). Her music is amazing.

May 1, 200619 yr Marisa Monte is a Brazilian popular singer, and one the biggest stars of contemporary MPB. She was born on July 1, 1967 in Rio de Janeiro. While classically trained in opera singing, she grew up surrounded by the sounds of the Portela samba school, and combines diverse influences into her music. While most of her music is in the style of modern MPB, she has also recorded traditional sambas and folklore tunes, and songs by Marvin Gaye and Lou Reed. Much of her work has been in collaboration with musicians/songwriters Carlinhos Brown, Arnaldo Antunes, and Nando Reis, and producer Arto Lindsay. She has also worked with foreign artists such as Laurie Anderson and Ryuichi Sakamoto. [edit] Discography Marisa Monte (1989) - 500,000 Mais (1991) 500,000 Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor-de-Rosa e Carvão (Rose & Charcoal) (1994) 600,000 Barulhinho Bom (A Great Noise) (1996) 600,000 Memórias, Crônicas, e Declaracões de Amor (Memories Chronicles & Declarations of Love) (2000) - 1,200,000 Tribalistas (as "Tribalistas", with Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes) (2003) - 1,300,000 Universo ao Meu Redor (Universe Around Me) (2006) Infinito Particular (Private Infinite) (2006)
May 1, 200619 yr Author Thanks, tigerboy, you did your homework... She remains unknown in most countries as she only sings in portuguese. She is a huge seller in the portuguese speaking countries, and a few latin countries. I just thought you should try her. To sell 1 million copies in Brazil these days is REALLY hard, she had a couple of albums achieving that, which is remarkable since she hardly appears on TV and is not keen on doing promo, she is like the Kate Bush of Brazil... She does tour, however, and it always sells out!
May 5, 200619 yr I love her - excellent, groundbreaking singer.... truly jaw-dropping vocals. She's classed as 'fado' yes? Also, I love Dulce Pontes, another singer whose voice is incredible.
May 26, 200619 yr Author Hmm, she has fado influences, but not properly a fado singer... I´d say she is the brazilian equivalent to Kate Bush, only with much more brazilian sound... MPB (música popular brasileira = brazilian popular music) ain´t properly a music style, it´s a name used to describe all music genres that are tipically brazilian, samba, bossa nova, etc... Marisa Monte has influences of several genres, but I think she can be classed as an "inteligent pop" singer. The songs I recomend from her... Vilarejo from one of her new albums (Infinito Particular), Beija Eu (one of her classics), and as a member of the group Tribalistas, Já Sei Namorar and Velha Infância, the latter ones are very easy listening so I think everyone can enjoy.
