Beatles, Stones team up!

teletext.co.uk

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are to appear on a compilation album together for the first time.

Both bands rarely licence their songs to compilations, but will feature on The Cavern, a 3CD set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liverpool club.

Out on August 20, it includes Please Please Me and It's All Over Now, as well as an exclusive version of Arctic Monkeys' View From The Afternoon.

MUSIC: Giants of rock 'n' roll link up for Cavern CD

Liverpool.com By Neil Hodgson.

THE BEATLES and TheRolling Stones are to appear on an album together for the first time - courtesy of the Cavern Club.

The world famous Mathew Street basement "where it all began" for the Fab Four is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

In a tribute, record label EMI is issuing a two-CD set featuring 50 of the biggest acts to appear there.

EMI catalogue marketing director Steve Davis said: "We have more than 40 acts cleared now so we are well on the way.

"It is most exciting for us getting The Beatles and Rolling Stones, because we believe it is the first time they have been on the same album together available to buy."

Rock glitterati signed up to appear alongside Britain's two biggest ever bands include The Who, Rod Stewart, Elton John and Queen.

Mr Davis said: "We want to make it very specific to the Cavern and those days. So there's people like Gerry and Pacemakers, the Swinging Blue Jeans, Cilla, the Animals and Manfred Mann to give the 60s feel.

"But we wanted to bring it up to date as well, because it's not a museum, it's a living, breathing thing. So we have also got people like Embrace, Travis and KT Tunstall."

Mr Davis said the compilation was coming together after lengthy high-level talks with different record companies.

He predicted the commemorative CD set could pave the way for a series of Cavern-related worldwide releases.

Mr Davis said: "This will be a 50- track collection to be proud of, but it can only scratch the surface.

"There could be a number of box sets down the line to get into more depth of what the Cavern is really about, because it also had a great jazz history before The Beatles played there."

Mixing of the Cavern recordings will start at the famous Abbey Road studios, where the Beatles recorded Sergeant Pepper's, in early June.

EMI plans to release the album around August 20 to coincide with this year's Mathew Street Festival and the start of the city's 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations.

Cavern co-owner Bill Heckle said: "We are thrilled because what it does is show the broad church that is the Cavern, so we are really, really pleased with it.

"We have a few things we will be releasing in the next few months, but this is a great way to get things started. There is already a lot of interest throughout the world."
